Preseason Press Conference with Coach Friedgen

What are your expectations for the upcoming 2010 football season coach?

"I'm pretty confident to be honest. I feel we have a great group of kids here in College Park and we'll be ready to return to a bowl game following last season's disasterous 2-10 finish. We have one of the conferences strongest running attacks led by senior halfback DaRel Scott and quarterback Jamaar Robinson. On defense, All ACC MLB Alex Wujciak leads the way for a solid group of linebackers.

What are some of your team's glaring weaknesses coming into the seasons?

Well I wouldn't neccessarily call anyone on this team a weakness but to be honest, I am a little worried about the quarterback position. Jamaar Robinson is entering his first year as the starter and he really hasn't done much to stand out. Unfortunately we don't have the depth to challenge him at the top of the depth chart with Danny O'Brien still being too raw to handle the offense.

If you're so worried about the quarterback position, why did you decide to redshirt star recruit Tyler Smith?

I said I was only a little worried. Jaamar is a veteran and knows his role in the offense. He knows that we expect him to lead a strong rushing offense and cut down on his mistakes. If he can do that he'll be fine. With that said, we felt Tyler would benefit from the extra year on the sidelines without using his eligibility. We expect him to make a run at the starting job in 2011.

What do you think about this upcoming recruiting season?

I'm very confident for the recruiting season. We have a great group of kids that we are targeting and any of them would make a huge impact on this team in the future. We are especially intrigued by Vincent Brown, the 4 star athlete from Pennsylvania. We think he would make an excellent middle linebacker in our system.

Are there any games on your schedule that you aren't looking forward to playing?

The West Virginia game is always tough and this year it will be especially hard. They have a lot of speed on offense led by Noel Devine. I'm not entirely sure we'll be able to catch up.
