Kent State
Brown First to Commit For Gonzales
Only three weeks into the 2011 season, Billy Gonzales is considering the start of the season, the start of his first recruiting class. It is already off to a fast start when Terry Brown became the first player to sign under Head Coach Gonzales.

Tapping into his Florida pipeline, Head Coach Gonzales signed Brown over the phone. The Clearwater High School captain chose Kent State over Florida Atlantic, Florida International and considerations from Indiana. Kent State and FAU were the only two to offer Brown a scholarship, and he was quick to sign with the Golden Flashes.

A run-stopper that reminds people of Lee Stalker, he could be the full time replacement for Stalker next fall. The team also started to organize official visits, getting three players to take their official visit when the team hosts MAC rival Bowling Green.

The highest rated, Michael Thomas, is another defensive lineman targeted by Kent. The Brunswick native and avid bowler is a versatile player that could also play end at the next level. The two-star tackle is looking at other MAC schools including Akron, Ohio, Miami, and Ball State.

The team also has two one-star players that will visit for that game. One of which, Richie Robinson, the coaching staff is high on. A safety, the staff believes Robinson could be a quick fit into Kent's secondary. A hard hitter, he is between Bowling Green and Kent State, and could make his decision after that game and visit.

Marcus Meyers, a guard and Pennsylvania native, looked to be all but committed to Marshall. But he still wants to visit other schools, including Kent State. A pass-blocking specialist, the coaching staff believes he could be a great addition to their offensive line.

I agree, it's not looking pretty. But, those are probably the toughest games on my schedule. Gets easier from here, minus the Oklahoma State game later.

Changes as Team Fires Up For Chips
Coming off of three straight losses, Kent State is looking to turn it around against another tough team, Central Michigan. Heading to Mount Pleasant for their game against the undefeated Chippewas (4-0), the team is now a quarter of the way through the 2011 season.

Through four games, they have lost Quarterback Chris Finley to injury, and will be without him for at least two more games. In spot duty, Spencer Keith has not played well, with only two touchdowns (1 passing) in two starts. With Giorgio Morgan also pushing for time, Head Coach Billy Gonzales named Keith the starter, at least for one more week.

A bigger problem for the offense might be the rushing game. In four games, the team has one rushing touchdown: A one yard run by Spencer Keith. Described as "unbelievable and unacceptable," Offensive Coordinator Tony Alford knows that must change. While the team is averaging just shy of 100 rushing yards per game; it does shows the teams difficulties in the red zone.

Also not helping the offense is the play of the interior of the line. Although it will see a change, as Chris Anzevino was benched in favor of Brian Waters. Listed as a tackle, Waters played at center last season. After allowing two sacks in two games, a struggling Anzevino was benched after a disappointing start to his Senior season.

With one week off, the team will need to regroup before its' third straight road game. Then it is home for two potentially winnable games against Ball State and Miami University.

Hate to say it, but I think a big part of it was talent. I have 4 players on defense that are rated 70 overall or better (L. Green, L. Stalker, W. Johnson, and Z. Gonosz). None are over 72, and a lot of the MAC schools don't have a starter WORSE than 70 on their defense.

Plus, I play on pretty tough sliders, so I don't take it easy on myself. That being said, I will post the Central game.
