    Flying High

With the arrogance of Mike Tyson in his prime and the language of a 19th century sailor, the New York Jets have proclaimed themselves as the team to beat in the 2010-11 NFL season. The remarkable thing about this team is that the new brash and confident culture was born and matured in just one season under Head Coach Rex Ryan. The “same old Jets” vibe around this team has evaporated as evidenced by veteran players signing with the Jets “to win and be part of a championship”. Even HBO and NFL Films have bought into the new attitude, featuring the team on this year’s Hard Knocks.

All is right in JetNation, or is it? Of course not. There are still numerous questions surrounding this team, but the biggest (and most important) question revolves around the team’s most talented defender player, but there are certainly others. In the end and regardless of the final outcome, the 2010 NFL season should prove to be memorable one for the Jets and their fans.

The coaching staff, lead by Ryan, remains essentially unchanged heading into 2010. Brian Schottenheimer returns as the Offensive Coordinator. Schottenheimer had a very good season calling the plays in 2009 and a repeat performance in 2010 may provide Schotty the chance to move on as a head coach. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine had a spectacular year in 2009 leading the NFL’s overall number one offense. He learned his craft from Ryan himself, and probably takes more than a few queues from Rex during a game, but Pettine is his own man and a talented coach. Need proof, see the benching of now ex-Jet Kerry Rhodes in the middle of 2009. Mike Westhoff, the NFL’s most respected Special Team Coordinator returns in 2010 with more than a few new players to indoctrinate in the “Westhoff Way”. One additional coach that is absolutely vital to the success of the 2010 Jets are offensive line and assistant head coach . Under Callahan the Jets offensive line has become one of the elite units in the NFL. Callahan’s task this year is to plugin a new, young left guard while maintaining the offensive line’s elite status.

                Coaching Staff

New York Jets, 2009: In his first season as the Jets head coach, Ryan led the team to a 9-7 regular season record, a wildcard berth in the playoffs and to the AFC Championship game against Indianapolis, falling just one game short of the Super Bowl. Ryan's Jets were first in the NFL in rushing yards per game during the regular season at 172.2 ypg, and allowed the fewest average points, fewest average total yards and lowest average passing yards in the NFL at 14.8 points per game, 252.3 yards per game and 153.7 yards per game respectively. In addition, the Jets sent five players to the Pro Bowl (Darrelle Revis, Shaun Ellis, Nick Mangold, D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Damien Woody) and two were named to the All-Pro team (Revis and Mangold). Including his four seasons as Baltimore's defensive coordinator from 2005-08, Ryan's defenses have been in the NFL's top 10 in yards allowed per game for 81 of the past 82 weeks.

In his first season as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, Coach Pettine installed a completely new defense and fielded a unit that ranked first in points allowed, total defense and pass defense.

◊ Under Coach Pettine CB Darrelle Revis recorded what Coach Ryan referred to as: “…the best year a corner has ever had (and) the most impact a corner has ever had in the National Football League. That's my opinion.” Revis earned first-team honors on every recognized team for his performance in 2009.

◊ LB David Harris earned second-team All Pro honors under Coach Pettine after leading the NFL’s number one defense with 142 tackles, 5.5 sacks, two interceptions, three passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

◊ Mike Pettine is one of two coaches that joined Coach Ryan was the first assistant coach hired by Head Coach Rex Ryan at the Jets. At the time of his hire Ryan said: “Mike is a rising star in this league. We’re fortunate that we were able to get him on our staff.”

◊ In 2009, while tutoring rookie QB Mark Sanchez, he coordinated an offense that rushed for a franchise record 2,756 yards, led the NFL with 172.3 yards per game and scored 21 touchdowns (tied for 3rd most in franchise history). The running game was powered by an offensive line that has started 35 (32 regular season, 3 postseason) consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NFL: LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson, LG Alan Faneca, C Nick Mangold, RG Brandon Moore and RT Damien Woody. Three of those players: Ferguson, Faneca and Mangold earned Pro Bowl honors for the units’ efforts throughout the season.

◊ Has a wide range of experience in working with quarterbacks in various points of their careers: Mark Sanchez (rookie), Philip Rivers (first and second seasons), Drew Brees (second thru fifth seasons), Chad Pennington (seventh and eighth seasons) and Brett Favre (18th season).

                      Erik Ainge Enters Rehab Facility

The New York Daily News is reporting that Jets backup quarterback Erik Ainge recently entered a drug treatment/rehab facility for "recreational issues."

The Jets put Ainge on the reserve/non-football illness list before the start of training camp, and on Monday Ainge wrote on Twitter that he is "taking some personal time to address a non-football related illness."

The Daily News characterizes the Jets as "very disappointed" and says there's no timetable for Ainge to return. There's a good chance that Ainge wouldn't have made the roster anyway on a team that has quarterbacks Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens and Kevin O'Connell.

In 2008 Ainge was suspended four games for taking a banned diuretic.

                        Mangold Inks 7 Year Deal

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- About two weeks ago, when the Darrelle Revis talks had deteriorated into a mudslinging contest between the New York Jets and Revis' agents, the Jets decided to shift their negotiating focus to center Nick Mangold.

At that point, Mangold had given up hope for a long-term contract extension this season. But he was summoned to a meeting with owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum and, according to Mangold, they said, "Hey, we'd like to get something done with you."

                        Consider it done.

At 3:30 Tuesday, Mangold signed a seven-year, $55 million contract, making him the highest-paid center in the NFL based on average salary per year. He eclipsed the $7.5 million-a-year average set last season by Jason Brown of the St. Louis Rams.

Jets Open Season With A Bang

The New York Jets opened the season with a major win. Playing their first game in their new stadium they gave the fans something special. Mark Sanchez was on point as he contacted with 7 different recievers totaling 431 Yards. Braylon Edwards had a great game with 5 catches and 165 Yards and 3 TDs. Edwards kept his fame alive by dropping 3 passes during this game. LT started off slow but finished with 125+ yards and 2 touchdowns. Joe Flacco was injured in the 3rd quarter but came back to deliver some nice strikes. The Jets defense looked very promising. Calvin Pace led the attack with 10 tackles. Revis and Cromartie each had picks.

                              Revis-Cromartie Guarantee Shutdown

Darrel Revis and Antonio Cromartie are the trash talkers of the team. Both corners have personally guarenteed a shutdown of Randy Moss and Wes Welkers when the Pats travel to New York this weekend. "We are confident in our defense to put pressure on Brady and make plays." they both said. Revis and Cromartie are arguably the best corner duo in the game. The Pats are coming off a week 1 loss to the Bengals. Tom Brady threw 3 INTs in that game as the Pats only managed to score 7 points.

"I dont care what they say, Me and Wes will get open and they will pay for blitzing 90% of the time, Tom will find us and all he needs to do is put the ball on the spot and we will make the plays." Pats WR Randy Moss commented back.

It should be a good game as the Jets are coming off a huge win over the Ravens.
