My name is Howard Phillips the QB of one of the smallest High Schools in the country, Jonesville High in central Kentucky. Are school is not known for anything but being out in the middle of no where but, this year We went out on a 8-2 record to win our district known as the "PAC." While winning this we got to go into the State Tournament and there is where our story begins.
I am just your average guy 6'0 230 pounds. Not to fast, not that strong, but I do enough for my team. This season was my first starting and a lot of scouts from smaller Kentucky schools such as WKU,EKU and Murray State came out to see me in multiple contests.
When I learned about the scouts I had to bring my GPA up. You see I am not the smartest kid on the team so I always have to worry about my academics. I am best friends with my TE Greg Homes. We both play LB on defense also. We've been friends since Freshman Year.
Ohio State has always been where I've wanted to go and I hope to get that chance but I will be happy with whatever comes my way.
This is my story, join me on my journey to super stardom.
With Flatwoods coming up Friday we had to practice and practice good as this team was better than we are. While I was driving my 92' Ford Ranger to practice I called Greg on the phone to ask him what plays he would be comfortable with. He told me "I am good with anything just put the ball in my hands."
When I arrived at the field we went into the weight room. Me and Greg had always been lifting partners. We have always done about the same. While we were lifting Coach Broome came up to me and told me I would not play Linebacker at all for the play-offs. When I asked him why he said,"Scouts do not care about your defense and we can take the risk of you getting hurt."
I was pretty upset on the news. When we headed on to the practice field we went into are offense individual drills, for the QBs it was just throwing fade routes to the receivers. After we went through this we went to defense stuff which I had to sit out through.
After D was my favorite part Team-O. Our JV D went against our Varsity O in what was similar to a scrimmage. We ran a lot of quick slants because coach said they have not faced a good passing team like us all year long.
After practice we had to get our game jerseys and stuff since it was a tradition to wear them to school on game day. I was pumped and ready to bring my school what they rightfully deserved.
"And Number 5 for the Blue and Gold Howard Phillips!" That was a name they were saying all night as we stomped Flatwood 31-0. I played great to help us advance to the next round but are defense played better.
After the game my dad came up to me and told me that Houston,Southern Miss,Ole Miss,Rutgers,UL Lafayette, and Boston College all attended the game tonight. I was so excited that scouts came to watch me play.
I was 13/23 246 yards and threw 2 TDs. After the game Coach Broome said we played great and that next week we would have to play Fort Campbell North. They are known for their star linebacker and hard hitting defense.
I am usually not a party guy but that may have changed last night. Greg and I went down to Louisville to celebrate our win with a dinner and stuff but it turned out way different than that. Last thing I remember was sitting at the bar at 1:03, and now I am at some random house at 10:30 in the morning with all my clothing on the floor. I have no idea what happened.
When I got dressed I saw my truck outside,I called Greg but there was no answer,so I went ahead and went back to Jonesville. What a night.
After my long, but weird weekend it was time to head back to school. As I pulled into the parking lot I saw Greg sitting on the ground. When I saw him I remembered about that night so I went up to him and asked him what happened after the game Friday. He responded,"Man you and some chick left that place and I didn't see ya again."
I was still wondering about it but I had other stuff to do. Through out the first part of the day I mostly slept through my classes. I knew I shouldn't but I didn't have nearly enough sleep throughout the weekend. The second half of the day I was tested in Algebra and Chemistry, they weren't to hard.
When the day headed I went down to the practice field where we watched film. Coach said this week I needed to have another great performance for us to advance another round. He also noted that Flatwood had better offensive stats and we put a big goose egg on them.It was only half-pads on film day so it wasn't that hard.
"Jonesville Advances In The State Tournament," was the only thing I could hear for the rest of the night as we beat Ft Campell 27-0. Defense has played amazing so far this year. I was 10/19 170 Yards with one TD.
I had some scouts from Iowa,Arkansas,Virgina, Western Michigan,Stanford, and UCLA come talk to my dad about me attending their school this fall.I am starting to develop a list of where I want to go that is interested in me.
After the game I went straight home, as I did not need another big night as I had last week. Plus I needed to concentrate semifinal game against Independence one of the best teams in the state.
I keep letting my mind wander into what could happen here in a couple weeks when I make my decision on where I want to sign on too.
This week went by way to fast. It was homework and practice all week, and with finals coming up soon I have to keep it like that. We have had extra long defensive sessions in practice to prepare for our hardest game all year.
I have not talked to Greg lately due to me being so busy but I plan on hooking up with him after the game on Friday since its been awhile.Scouts are saying I may be able to start my freshman year at some colleges depending on how we finish out in the state tournament!
Greg has also gotten some offers to go play LB in college. I really hope he does well wherever he goes. Coach Broome is putting a lot on our shoulders this week. A lot of agents have been trying to get in touch with me even though I want to concentrate on the game, but I guess I need to talk to them.
"Jonesville IS Goign to state there going to state for the first time in school historyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!" That is what was said we we defeated Independence 19-10. I was so proud of our team. We are going to State for the first time ever.
Greg was gone after the game so I didn't a chance to talk to him but I didn;t have time due to the scouts from Kentucky,Tulsa,Utah,Virgina Tech,Arkansas, and Nebraska. They were all happy with my 15/20 109 1 TD game against the best team in Kentucky.
In the championship game we play Paducah, another surprise team to be there. We actually have a chance to win State!
Our school added a new tradition and it was called winning. No one could stop Jonesville,we were the best there was and everything was perfect. School had gone great and I got my list of colleges ready for signing day. Greg told me he had already decided where he was going and would announce it after the game.
We have really earned where we are at. Everyone played hard, gave there all and that's all it took to get to where we are at. Most of all I am proud is our D,they really showed up.
State is going to be a great experience. We have been feeling the hype all week, getting random high fives and calls from scouts, coaches, and parents wishing us luck.
"Paducah is your Kentucky State Champions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I could bare to hear those words. They beat us. We had our chances and they played better than us. It is just that simple.
Greg announced he was going to Florida right after the game. I was happy for him. I was also happy to know that Arkansas Miami Ciniccinatti Georgia Tech LSU And Florida State all came to my game.
I was also told I will be a "Blue Chip" Recruit meaning I am up there with some of the best in the country. Time to finish out my senior year and head to college time to decide my future.
With football over school started to fly by. We had finals this week and then it would be graduation and then signing day.Ever since that loss me and Greg have been farther apart.I have had some scouts contact my agent about me attending their college and in complete honesty I am not to worried about it right now.
I had 5 finals to take in one day,and then we were basically done for the year. The first few were easy but the last couple I had to really work on.After school I headed down to the complex to work out like I have since football ended. The same ol' same ol'.
When the finals came back my GPA finish out at almost a 3! I was surprised I finished so well academically. The only thing left before signing day is graduation the funnest part of the year.
As we all threw are hats in the air,a breeze came across. It was over. High School was done and now is when all the big stuff starts happening. Like signing day.
After the ceremony I went to a party to chill with some friends. I was kinda sad to be done wit high school but I knew I had a new chapter in my life to write. At the party there was a lot of alcohol that night but I knew I couldn't get caught up in all that with college scouts coming tomorrow.
After the party it was around 2 AM so I decided to go home and crash because I knew I had a big day tomorrow and signing day next week. Dad wants me to attend Florida State with Greg but I just don't know. I am hoping to avoid red shirt freshman year and get some playing time but we will see.
