Two Coaching Master Minds Call it a Career

47 NBA season coached between the two coaches. Gregg Popovich and Don Nelson were tremendous coaches. Don Nelson was suppose to lead the Lakers to an NBA championship in his final season coaching, the year after Phil Jackson called it a career. Didn't happen as they lost in the first round this season.

Gregg Popovich, in my opinion, single handily built the Spurs to the team that was so great for so long. I can't say that about too many other coaches. Sad to see him go only after 15 years, but not everyone lasts 32 like Don Nelson.

In game five's loss to the Cavs, the Heat also lost there star player. Dwyane Wade went down with 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter as the Heat were on a comeback. He went down on a dirty foul by LeBron James. He was holding his ankle and went back to the locker room. Test results were out and he had a severe ankle sprain, which will cause him to miss the rest of the playoffs. This is a huge blow to the Heat, as they were just about to close out the Cavs. Will they keep there cool in game 6 with Stephen Curry running the 2 spot Wade left?

The Heat had 4 players they had options on keeping or letting ago. But these guys weren't bench warmers, these guys were a starter, a sixth man, a key role player and trade bait, and the MVP. The Heat accepted team options for DerMarr Johnson, Courtney Lee, and Michael Beasley and also accepted Stephen Curry's 2 year team option. It appears as if the Heat will trade Courtney Lee to move up in the draft so be on the lookout.

This option period was commanded by the 2009 and 2010 draft class'. Everyone from those two classes contracts were accepted. Carmelo Anthony also accepted his player option. But four big names either declined their player option or their team declined to keep them.

Chauncey Billups and Vince Carter times look like they are dwindling away. They are both 34 and are now free agents as the Pistons and Nets respectively did not pick up their team options. It's obvious that those players are falling as the players they use to be but they are still very good players and can start on nearly any team or come off the bench as a sixth man.

These two players choose to not return to there respective team. Leandro Barbosa is the third Suns' starter to leave this season. It appears as if the Suns are rebuilding. Barbosa averaged a career high 20 points per game last season and shot 46% from down town.

David West also declined to accept his player option. He thinks he can get more money either from the Hornets or another team. Last season he averaged 15 points, 7 rebounds, and a block a game for the Hornets.

The Heat only signed one player that had their contract expire, and that was Sean Williams. The contract was a 3 year deal with a players option for the 4th, starting at 6.55 million a year. He is expected to have a much better role next season, along with Stephen Curry. He averaged nearly 5 points, 4 rebounds, and a block a game in limited playing time off the bench, but plays very well in extended playing time. In game 7 against the Cavaliers he put up 20 points as a starter. This looks like a good pickup for the Heat.
