            Year of the Injury

FLUSHING, New York - Once again, the Mets have to place another starter on the disabled list.

Carlos Beltran, who only played seven games after being activated from the disabled list, is back on that very same disabled list with a torn ligament in his thumb. "I don't know what it is with our outfielders, whether it's just pure luck or the field is hard or what, but they cannot avoid injury," said General Manager Chris Eckenrod.

Beltran, as well as Jason Bay, will miss the next four weeks. "I hate being off the field, and these injuries just will not go away," said Beltran, who was batting .364 with 3 home runs through 7 games.

Frank Catalanotto will be taking Beltran's place in the outfield for the time being, until Angel Pagan returns in four games. MR Elmer Dessens, who was 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA at Buffalo, will be called up to take Beltran's place on the Active Roster.

            NEWS AND NOTES
            • C Henry Blanco (.156 BA) was waived and designated for assignment
            • C Omir Santos (.319 BA) was called up from Triple-A Buffalo

                Are You Kidding Me?!
                More Injuries For The Mets

FLUSHING, New York - Just when you thought the Mets had enough injuries, another pops up. Between Carlos Beltran, Angel Pagan, Jason Bay, and now, once again, Jose Reyes, major stars are just falling for the Mets.

Reyes once again strained his bothersome hamstring while running the bases during a 7-4 loss against the Yankees. "I don't think Jose came back too early from his first injury, but that this was a whole separate injury," said manager Jerry Manual.

Injuries aren't the worst part of the Mets season so far, but instead the poor play of Johan Santana. Currently, Santana is 1-2 with a 5.77 ERA in 9 starts, with batters hitting .327 against him. Rumors have been flying around local media that the Mets would love to trade him, but GM Chris Eckenrod was quick to deny that rumor. "Why would we try to trade Johan when his poor performance would not get us the best deal possible? Actually, why would we try to trade Johan at all?" said Eckenrod when asked about the rumor.

Also disappointing this season is David Wright, who still has his power numbers, but is hitting almost 50 points below his career average. One reason for this is a high number of strikeouts by Wright this season. "I wouldn't say that I'm in a slump, but I'm not happy with the performance," said Wright. He continued to say that he is happy that "at least one thing is going right", in reference to his power numbers, and that it is easier to handle a problem when it is only one thing.

Currently, the Mets find themselves 3.5 games out of the NL East lead, behind the first place Philadelphia Phillies, and also the Braves and Nationals.

                          2010 MLB Amateur Draft

FLUSHING, New York - The Mets had their highest draft pick since holding the 3rd pick in the 2004 Amateur Draft, and General Manager Chris Eckenrod was looking for one thing and one thing only: Pitching.

"We need to build our team around a young core of pitchers. We already have a solid core of Jose Reyes and David Wright on offense, with some young talent coming up through the minors, but we really lack with pitching," said Eckenrod. Though you could make an argument that the Mets do have some decent pitching, ace Johan Santana is having a career-worst season, and no starter has an ERA below 4.00.

One source said that the team's first choice was highly touted prospect SP Bill Tyler, but he was selected by the Kansas City Royals. "Don't be surprised if the Mets use one of their star players in a trade to acquire Tyler eventually, he is the exact type of player they want," said the source after the trade.

The Mets ended up using their sixth pick in the draft to pick SP Dylan Covey out of high school. The immediate scouting report for Covey says that he will be a "consistant candidate for the Cy Young Award every season." The hope is that he will pan out this way, unlike past Mets' pitching picks, including Mike Pelfrey.

The two major picks by the Mets were the 2nd and 3rd round picks of CL Alejandro Ruiz and MR Angel Canseco. Both are almost major league ready and both look to be future bullpen stars for the Mets.

                          2010 Mets Draft Picks

                            Mets Shut Down Beltran
                            Continued Injuries Are "Hurting Team"

FLUSHING, New York - Carlos Beltran is once again "day-to-day" with a nagging shoulder injury and thumb injury. That was enough for GM Chris Eckenrod who announced that Beltran was being placed on the Disabled List and won't be activated for at least 3 weeks. "Carlos is continuously coming back too soon and we need him to rest for a bit," said Eckenrod.

The move wasn't taken well by manager Jerry Manual, according to insider sources. Manual was upset with GM Eckenrod taking away another star off his already hurting lineup. When asked about the rumors, Eckenrod said "those are not true, and if they were, I'd rather have Beltran miss 3 weeks now then aggravate an injury and miss the season."

                                Mets Trade Oliver Perez

FLUSHING, New York - In a stunning turn of events, Oliver Perez was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers today, in exchange for minor league RF Kyle Russell and SP Vicente Padilla.

Just several weeks ago, trade rumors were popping up about Oliver Perez being traded to the Chicago Cubs, but they were immediately denied by GM Chris Eckenrod, who said then that a Perez trade was not likely to occur during the season. When asked today about those comments, Eckenrod said "sometimes a trade comes up that changes your mind."

Padilla had a 3.97 ERA and 7 wins with the Dodgers, but recent comments about the team's play after a loss seemed to set off management, who looked to trade Padilla immediately.

The Mets came out winners in this trade, as they picked up minor leaguer Kyle Russell, who could become a major part of the Mets bench in coming months, as well as Padilla for a cheaper price than expected. "We aren't afraid of players with problems. Vicente talked with us after the trade and confirmed our belief that this was not a large issue," said Eckenrod.
