      Week 7 - Game Report

Michigan Wolverines (5-1) (1-1) at Michigan State Spartans (5-0) (1-0)

Close Battle Turns Out Into Blowout In The 4th Quarter

Senior HB Michael Shaw's 35 Rushing TD was only 1 of 5 of the TD's scored in the 4th quarter by Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - Michigan met up against their in-state rival, Michigan State this week who was 6th ranked in the country. Playing at home and and battling it out for the Paul Bunyun Trophy both teams went at it back and forth until the 4th quarter. The score of the game definitely looks deceiving.

After a 1st quarter of going back and forth with no points, both teams got on the board in the 2nd quarter as a 56 yard touchdown bomb from Spartans redshirt Senior standout QB Kirk Cousins who just laid it perfectly over the top on the one on one mismatch with the LB covering a WR for an early 7-0 lead. Michigan State stopped Michigan once again on their following drive and then proceeded to move down the field tacking on another 3 points to take the 10-0 lead late in the first half.

On the 3rd play of Michigan's next drive following the field goal, speedster QB Denard "Shoelace" Robinson took a QB Choice play out of the backfield, found a huge lane to run through and ended up stiff arming a defender and outrunning the rest for 84 yards down to the field to put the Wolverines on the board in an exciting fashion! 10-7 Spartans at halftime.

The start of the second half looked to be another tough battle for points for both teams as Michigan tacked on their 3 points to tie the game 10-10 with 11 seconds remaining in the 3rd. The following 2 plays are what sparked a complete blowout in the game. First it would appear Michigan State would get back it's momentum right away by returning a kickoff 97 yards down the field for a touchdown giving them the lead right back at the end of the 3rd quarter, 17-10 Spartans.

Then things just went nuts. 4th quarter begins with a kickoff as redshirt Senior WR/KR Darryl Stonum makes a few guys miss before turning on the jets down the sidelines for a 100 yard touchdown! Back to back kickoff return touchdowns, are you kidding me?! 17-17 all tied up again. Unfortunately for Michigan State, their offensive line decided to quit playing in the 4th quarter giving up 6 sacks in the 4th quarter ALONE (9 total on the day), one time even having 3 straight sacks to end a drive! Michigan ended up scoring on ALL 4 of their 4th quarter possessions just dominating the Spartans scoring a total of 35 points in one quarter!

The final score ended up being 45-17 Michigan as they take home the Paul Bunyan Trophy and bounce back from their tough loss last week at Northwestern with a decisive victory over the previously undefeated #6 Michigan State Spartans.

6th Ranked TE In Country Commit's To Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI - Coming off the heels of a huge victory over rival Michigan State (former #6 ranked in the country) 45-17, the Wolverines have added their 4th committed player so far this season in Eric Joseph, a 6'4" 252 pound tight end out of Ajo, Arizona. Coach Kleinbauer had this to say about Joseph, "Eric (Joseph) is one of the first guys I sent some of my recruiters down to see in the Southwest. He's going to give us many options on the offensive side of the ball, he's a big speedy threat who has decent blocking skills. We're happy to have him at the University of Michigan.

Eric Joseph will be majoring in Engineering.

Coach Kleinbauer Was On Jim Rome Is Burning Earlier Today

Jim Rome: "Welcome back to the show, I have a terrific guest on the show today, a man that's been on before, the Michigan Wolverines young head coach, Michael Kleinbauer. Coach how are you today?"

Michael Kleinbauer: "Pretty good Jim, glad to be back. I'm just gearing up for Purdue after the bye week."

Rome: "Already? No relaxing time after that huge victory over previously ranked rival #6 Michigan State?"

Coach Kleinbauer: (chuckles) "I had my Sunday & Monday of relaxing, now it's time to get back to work. You can never take these conference games for granted as we found out the hard way 2 weeks ago at Northwestern."

Rome: "Speaking of that game, describe the vibe of how the campus and players were coming off that loss to give the Wolverines their first and so far only loss of the season. I'd imagine there was frustration and disappointment."

Coach Kleinbauer: "There was, but if I've learned anything from coaching these past 3 years it's that you can't dwell on what's already happened. Especially in this line of work, you won't last long if you do. You just focus on your next opponent and try and get the guys to rally around you in the process."

Rome: "Well they certainly did rally around to put up 45 on Michigan State, 35 points alone in the 4th quarter! Talk about your ups and downs, I could only imagine how sweet it was to be on that sideline in that 4th quarter in Lansing."

Coach Kleinbauer: "A pleasent surprise to say the least. That game was a tough, old school grind it out to see who's back would be broken first the first three quarters. From the 100 yard kickoff return by Darryl (Stonum) to start it off, our team, offense, defense, and special teams all came together and played like we know we can play. I think our defensive line had 6 sacks in that quarter alone, they really went into straight beast mode to get to Kirk (Cousins). I just told them to not let off the throttle even once we were up by two touchdowns, keep the pressure on and they definitely did."

Rome: "From a viewers standpoint that game was fun to watch and I'm sure all that frustration was released that game. I saw you guys cracked into the Top 25 polls once again, this time at #21."

Coach Kleinbauer: "Hopefully we can stay in the Top 25 for the remainder of the season, one game at a time."

Rome: "And your next game is back in Ann Arbor against Purdue, who you've had issues with in your first season as Michigan's coach, not to bring up bad memories, but you lost in West Lafayette when you went up their for a classic snowy ballgame that saw the Boilermakers come out on top, 45-38 in 2009. How are you going to prepare for them this season?"

Coach Kleinbauer: (laughs) "Why you bringing up old crap?" No, like I said earlier, these conference games are no joking around. In fact every season now we've lost one, first with Purdue, then Illinois last year, and now this year with Northwestern. So trust me, I have plenty experience with that pain, doesn't make it any easier. But our success all starts with Denard (Robinson) and I think our first few offensive drives will set the tone. Defensively we've got to pressure on their exceptional Senior QB, Robert Marve. Rob's been having a solid season so far and we have to get him out of rythym quick."

Rome: "Well I'll be watching for sure, always a pleasure Coach. Good luck in the rest of your season and we hope to have to you back on soon, take care."

Coach Kleinbauer: "Look forward to it and appreciate it."

                        Week 9 - Game Report

                        Purude Boilermakers (5-2) (2-1) at #19 Michigan Wolverines (6-1) (2-1)

Pesky Boilermakers Flicked Away With Crucial Late INT TD

SS Jordan Kovacs leaps into the endzone after a 102 yard interception return

It Was Over When... - Miami Transfer redshirt Senior QB Robert Marve drove his team all the way down to the 2 yard line after a 10 play drive and misread a route throwing the ball right into the hands of former walk on stud Junior SS Jordan Kovacs who made one man miss and broke it to the outside and outran everyone into the endzone after a 102 yard interception return with under a minute to go to put the dagger in Purdue's hopes of a comeback. Wolverines win 42-28.

Turning Point - When Sophomore QB Devin Gardner came in for an injured Denard Robinson in the 4th quarter and orchestrated an 8 play driver that was capped off with a 4 yard QB keeper up the middle for a touchdown followed by a two point conversion that put the Wolverines ahead by a touchdown with 3 minutes remaining in the game, 35-28.

Stat Of The Night - Michigan's pass defense continues to get thrashed, this time for 356 yards and 3 touchdowns. Yet the Wolverines still find ways to win, albeit for how much longer?
