    2013 ROSTER PREVIEW
    -DEFENSE-

SENIOR LINEBACKERS TOM TERRY (RIGHT) AND CHRIS KINIRY (LEFT) LEAD AN EXPERIENCED DEFENSE

    DEFENSIVE LINE (DE/DT)
Lawrence Castillo recorded 45 tackles and two sacks last season, and returns to the starting lineup for his final collegiate year. Joining him will be junior Ryan Downs, who replaces recently graduated starter Jason Guidry. Castillo's graduation at the end of the year will signal what is sure to be a fierce competition for the vacant starting spot between junior Michael Higdon, and true freshmen Reggie Lacey and Rodney Anderson. At defensive tackle, Sam Browning returns as the team's #1 guy at the position. Joining him will be JUCO transfer Bryan Martindale, who is in his first year with the team. With all four of the team's defensive tackles currently in their junior season, the Outlaws will redshirt JUCO transfer Perry Lynch to leave them with at least one experienced defensive tackle in 2015.

RECRUITING: The Outlaws will target just one player on the defensive line: three-star prospect Josh Brown out of Mount Pleasant, Texas, who has shown excellent pass rushing skills in high school.

    LINEBACKER CORPS (OLB/MLB)
As the undisputed leaders of the defense, Chris Kiniry (OLB) and Tom Terry (MLB) combined for 139 tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles last year. This season, they'll be joined by second-year freshman Clay Miller (OLB), who replaces the recently graduated Luke Pace in the starting lineup. Waiting in the wings to replace Kiniry and Terry once they graduate at the end of 2013 are freshmen Thomas Robinson (OLB) and Antoine Pitts (MLB).

RECRUITING: The team was already short one player at outside linebacker, and will lose two more seniors after this year. WTU hopes to bring in three players at the position: three-star prospects Thomas Payne, Ronald Allen, and Darrell Palmer, all Texas natives who have the Outlaws listed as one of their top three schools. At middle linebacker, the team will target three-star prospect Willie Foreman of Port Arthur, TX to replace Tom Terry.

    CORNERBACK
Five of the team's six cornerbacks last season have graduated, giving the Outlaws a dramatically different (and inexperienced) secondary this year. Thomas Bray will be #1 on the depth chart following a redshirt last season, and will be joined by three-star recruits Zach West at #2, and Nate Williams as nickelback. JUCO transfer Bryan Bowser rounds out the depth chart, with true freshman Brian Clemons and Jermaine Hall taking a redshirt in 2013.

RECRUITING: The plus side to having such a young secondary is that the team can focus their recruiting attention elsewhere. Don't expect any new recruits here for the next three years, unless a real gem of a player shows interest in the team.

    SAFETY (FS/SS)
After combining for 108 tackles last season, seniors A.J. Smart (FS) and Alfred Billings (SS) return as the team's starters once again in 2013. They'll be backed up by junior Aaron Gibbons (FS) and second-year freshman Justin Williams (SS). True freshmen Taylor Bentley (FS) and Lawrence Carlson (SS) will both redshirt this season in anticipation of taking over the starting job next season.

RERUITING: The Outlaws hope to land three-star prospects Erik Jack (FS) and Joel Little (SS), both of whom list WTU as the top school right now.

    SPECIAL TEAMS (K/P/RET)
Senior Caleb Reynolds and sophomore Clint Weaver return as the special teams leaders at kicker and punter, respectively. Third-year sophomore Vernon Weaver will spend yet another season on the bench, but should step into the starting spot at kicker once Reynolds graduates at the end of this season. Meanwhile, senior wide receiver C.J. Bellamy will take over the return duties after seeing some limited action at the position behind Jared Ingram last year.

RERUITING: The team is currently targeting two-star prospect Miguel Witherspoon (P) out of Dallas, TX to fill the hole left by the graduating Caleb Reynolds.

    TOTAL RECRUITING TARGETS: 8

I'm hoping for the same...the defense is about the same, but the offense is greatly improved over last season. Hopefully I can get that elusive bowl appearance (and win?!), and maybe reach the coveted four-star program mark!

                    WEEK TWO
                    -RIVALRY GAME-

                    WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (0-0, 0-0)
                    VS.
                    #21 TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS (0-0, 0-0)

Just like everyone expected, the opening years of one of Texas' newest rivalries has been decidedly one-sided. In their 3rd annual season-opening rivalry game, the 21st ranked Red Raiders faced off against a stout defense that managed to hold Texas Tech to just 21 points in six redzone trips, but thanks to their own solid defensive effort had little trouble dispatching the Outlaws, walking away with a 28-3 win.

In what has become a yearly tradition in the game, starting quarterback Charles Dickson completed just two of his eight attempted passes for two yards and threw an interception before leaving the game with a mild concussion that shouldn't keep him sidelined more than a few days. Xavier Rouse didn't fare much better in his relief role, completing six of his twelve passes for a pitiful 56 yards. The only offensive bright spot of the day came on the ground, where senior runningback DeShaun Sands rushed for 126 yards off 27 carries in his WTU debut. Defensively, the Outlaws didn't record a single sack or turnover, and allowed 462 total offensive yards, but did somehow manage to limit Texas Tech to just 28 points despite the ineptitude of their own offense.

On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback Jacob Karam completed 18 of 37 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns in his first game as the team's starter. His go-to man was senior Eric Ward (pictured above), who shredded the defense for 149 yards and a score on nine catches, while tight end Jace Amaro caught four balls for 68 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, the Red Raiders recorded four sacks, one interception, held the Outlaws to just over 200 total offensive yards and fewer than 60 passing yards, and didn't allow a single touchdown.

The Red Raiders will take next week off before playing host to the UAB Blazers (0-1) in week four. Then it's off to California, where the team will face it's first true test of the year as they battle #4 USC (1-0) in their PAC-16 conference opener. As for the Outlaws, they'll head east next week to face off against the Appalachian State Mountaineers (0-1), who joined the FBS in the same year as WTU, but have had noticeably worst luck, going 8-16 (4-11) in their first two seasons, while the Outlaws have posted a record of 13-11 (10-5) in the same stretch.

                          WEEK THREE

                          WEST TEXAS OUTLAWS (0-1, 0-0)
                          VS.
                          APPALACHIAN ST. MOUNTAINEERS (0-1, 0-0)

Two of the newest teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision squared off on Saturday, and after a back-and-forth game that saw the Mountaineers keep pace with their west Texas foes, it was the Outlaws' outstanding running game that prevailed. Led by senior runningback DeShaun Sands, WTU racked up over 200 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and pulled away in the fourth quarter to take home their first victory of the season, 30-16.

From the first score to the final second, the Outlaws never trailed in this contest...but it was still a close call, as Appalachian State managed to stay within striking distance for most of the game. In his return from a mild concussion that sidelined him last week, Charles Dickson had a decent outing in his first full game of 2013, completing half of his 22 passes for 153 yards. But it was the play of senior runningback DeShaun Sands that won the game, as he rushed for 186 yards and a touchdowns off 33 carries, and also had a 38-yard catch. Backup runningback Tyree Melton also saw limited action, rushing for 25 yards and a score off four carries. A good portion of the credit for the win must also go to senior kicker Caleb Reynolds, who hit all three of his attempted field goals, including a 41-yarder to open up the scoring in the first quarter. Defensively, the Outlaws had a much-improved performance over last week, holding the Mountaineers to four successful conversions on fourteen 3rd and 4th down attempts. They also limited their opponents to just one touchdown in four redzone trips, forcing them to settle for field goals on the other three scoring drives. They also recorded two sacks, and forced a game-changing three turnovers.

On the other side of the ball, senior quarterback James Harstead completed 17 of 31 passes for 209 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Harstead also rushed for 57 yards off 14 carries. His go-to man was junior tight end Curtis Rushing, who led the team with six catches for 88 yards and the team's only score of the day. But the team failed in their mission to utilize a balanced offensive attack, as junior runningback Giovanni Bernard was limited to 53 yards off 11 carries. Appalachian State's defense was led by true sophomore Chris Green (MLB), who recorded nine tackles and 1.5 sacks, but as a whole the team continued to struggle with containing opposing offenses as they allowed 373 total offensive yards and three touchdowns.

Three weeks into the new season, the Mountaineers are still winless, but hope to correct that in the upcoming weeks. In fourteen days, they'll play host to Ole Miss (0-2), who was shocked by lowly UL Monroe 24-21 last week, before they hit the road to face off against Central Michigan (0-1), a team more closely in line with their skill level. Meanwhile, the Outlaws will also enjoy a bye week as they prepare for their first home game of the year on September 21st when they'll play host to semi-rival New Mexico State (1-1) for the first time in school history.
