      2012 Oregon State Season Preview

When we last left the Beavers, they were busy getting drilled by in-state rival Oregon in the Civil War. It was the fourth loss in a row to the Ducks who would head to the Rose Bowl for their third BCS appearance in a row. Quite a tale of two different programs in the state of Oregon as the Beavers again missed out again on getting to a bowl for the second year in a row. It was a season that Oregon State would just like to forget. The 2011 season could not have started worse for Oregon State. The Beavers opened the season against FCS Sacramento State of the Big Sky at Reser Stadium, a team that had never won a game versus an FBS opponent. After opening the previous season against TCU, this should have been an easy win. Oregon State would infamously be shockingly defeated 29-28 by the Sacramento State Hornets in overtime on the final play of the game when the Hornets scored on a two-point conversion to stun the Beavers. It was one of the most embarrassing losses in Oregon State history. And that is really saying something for one of the losingest college football programs in history. Sacramento State did not even end up having a good season as the Hornets finished their FCS season with a 4-7 overall record and a 3-5 record in the Big Sky.

There was not really anything positive to take away from the loss other than true freshman HB Malcom Agnew's performance. With big shoes to fill after Jacquizz Rodgers leaving for the NFL. The true freshman rushed for 223 yards for a school freshman record. Though Agnew did have a costly fumble that did help contribute to the loss. Unfortunately, the lone positive for the Beavers would struggle to stay healthy and continued to have fumble issues. Fumbles were almost a foreign concept for Beaver fans as OSU fans had been spoiled with Jacquizz Rodgers who only fumbled one time in his entire career.

      Malcom Agnew

Though the lone bright spot of the game was not the topic of conversation. QB Ryan Katz was replaced at halftime by redshirt freshman Sean Mannion who was able to lead a comeback that gave the Beavers a chance but came up short because of a costly fumble and missed field goals. As a result, a QB controversy emerged. To make matters worse, Oregon State now had to travel to Camp Randal to face a very good Wisconsin team who eventually ended up playing in the Rose Bowl.

The results were not pretty. Mike Riley could not have said it better, "Just bad football." Oregon State was blanked 35-0 on national television in one of the most uncompetitive games of that Saturday or really the entire season. The Beavers almost appeared to not even try to win. Ryan Katz started the game but Sean Mannion took most of the snaps and did not look very impressive. It was a very puzzling QB rotation that completely seemed to kill any semblance of offensive rythm. Special teams was even a disaster when punter Johnny Hekker bizarrely shanked a ball out of bounds for a four-yard loss that gave the ball back to the Badgers deep in OSU territory. That play pretty much summed up Oregon State's season in a nut shell.

Redshirt freshman Sean Mannion was officially named starting QB. It would be a long, long season for the Beavers as they would struggle losing their next two games to UCLA and Arizona State before finally winning the first game of the season against Arizona who promptly fired head coach Mike Stoops. Oregon State would only manage to win two more games against Washington State and Washington. Then finished off the season getting drilled 49-21 in the Civil War to finish with a 3-9 record in a very weak Pac-12.

The lone bright spot of the entire season was that Sean Mannion was named NCAA Freshman QB of the Year although he did lead the NCAA in interceptions. If the Beavers are going to bounce back this season, Oregon State will need Mannion to grow up in a hurry.

      Sean Mannion

That might not be so easy since the offensive line let not only Mannion down but also failed to open up holes for any of the running backs to consistently have any offensive consistency last year. The offensive line needs to improve dramatically if OSU is going to have any chance this season. It is pretty safe to say that how well this offensive line does this season is how well the Beavers do this season. The Beavers did address their offensive line by recruiting LG Isaac Seumalo who is expected to be one of the best linemen in this year's class, RT Gavin Andrews, C Grant Bays, and LT Garrett Weinreich. But as of now it appears Mike Riley intends to red shirt all of the incoming freshmen for the future. That means it will be up to last year's starters to get it turned around this year.

      Isaac Seumalo

Oregon State had hoped James Rodgers would come back from his knee injury the previous season and be the same dynamic playmaker. But Rodgers was just not the same when he finally did come back. Though WRs Markus Wheaton and Brandin Cooks had their moments. With Rodgers gone, they will have their opportunities to hopefully take their games to the next level. Wheaton kind of went underneath the radar last year hauling in 73 receptions for 986 receiving yards while also rushing for 190 yards on fly sweeps. Look for Wheaton to be a major focus this season. Cookshad 391 receiving yards as a true freshman last year and should be expected to only be better this year. Despite only being 5'9", Cooks has shown a nice vertical to be a bigger target than meets the eye. Plus he has the quickness and route running ability to get open. Oregon State should have enough playmakers especially if HB Malcom Agnew can stay healthy. Though will be up to the offensive line to find out how successful this offense will be.

      Markus Wheaton, Brandin Cooks

Defensively, Oregon State surprised many by being a bit better than expected. Not great but not terrible as was expected especially with all of the youth. The defensive line is led by sophomore DE Scott Crichton who was the bane of every Pac-12 QB last year. As a freshman, Crichton led the team with six sacks but he also had a school record six forced fumbles. OLB Michael Doctor is a tremendous athlete with a ton of speed and should stand out in this year's linebacking group. While the secondary is led by CB Jordan Poyer who is considered by many to be one of the best defensive backs in the nation and is also a fantastic kick returner.

Most of the pundits are picking the Beavers to be at or near the bottom of the Pac-12 North but it is worth remembering how young Oregon State was last season. OSU brings back a ton of returning starters but the Beavers appear to have a daunting task ahead of them if they want to get back to a bowl this year.

        Game of the Week

        #1 Alabama 0-0 (0-0) at #9 Michigan 0-0 (0-0)

Chris: It's finally here. College football is back! And we have a a terrific game to kickoff the 2012 season with two of the most storied progams in all of college football. We're here in Ann Arbor where the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide will defend their national title against the #9 Michigan Wolverines tonight under the lights. But before we start previewing upcoming season, let us look back at some of the images from last year...

Chris: And I'm sure this season will be just as exciting as the last one. So let's look at the preseason rankings...

Chris: Michigan QB Denard Robinson (93) will look to kickoff his 2012 Heisman campaign tonight but it seems like USC QB Matt Barkley looks to be the early favorite. Let's take a look at the rest of the challengers...

        QB Matt Barkley (USC)
        HB Montee Ball (Wisconsin)
        CB Tyrann Mathieu (LSU)
        QB Denard Robinson (Michigan)
        QB Landry Jones (Oklahoma)

        Friday Night

        #21 Boise State 23
        #12 Michigan State 33

Chris: Crowd boos the Michigan State victory. And as you can, these Michigan fans have no love for Sparty's big win over the Broncos last night. Well, these fans would like to see the Big Ten get another signature win tonight under the lights of the Big House. But does Nick Saban have the answer to stop Denard Robinson? Can the Wolverines take out the #1 team in the land? Kirk, you will have the call tonight so you can't make a pick but give us your take.

Kirk: This game for me will come down to whether Alabama's great defense will be able to contain Denard Robinson. The Tide definitely have the athletes to get it done with MLBs Nico Johnson (93), and CJ Mosley (90). These two will especially have their work cut out for them today to try and keep Robinson inside the pocket. But Robinson will also have a tough time throwing the ball because of Alabama's secondary led by CB Dee Milliner (92) and FS Robert Lester (90). Saban will have these guys ready. It's going to be tough sledding for Michigan tonight but we'll see.

Lee: Alabama has a good looking tailback in Eddie Lacy (89) but he has big shoes to fill after Trent Richardson. Really big shoes to fill. The Tide will need a big day on the ground from this kid. But forget about it sweetheart! This is Denard Robinson's night to shine! No way he lets them down. Big, big game for "Shoelace" on the biggest stage!

GO BLUE! GO MICHIGAN! Crowd goes crazy.

FCS Nicholls State at Oregon State
(Simulated. This will not be what most of the game reports will look like but I don't like playing the FCS games.)

Corvallis, OR - After opening the season by going right into the side of a mountain with a devastating loss to FCS Sacramento State last year, the Beavers would take nothing for granted in their season opener against FCS Nicholls State of the Southland Conference. Sophomore QB Sean Mannion looked fantastic in his debut of the 2012 season on the opening drive, hitting WR Markus Wheaton on a deep pass down the right sideline for 36-yard touchdown to put Oregon State up 7-0. The Beavers did not stop there though as Mannion found Wheaton again on a deep post for a 24-yard touchdown to take a quick 14-0 lead in the 2nd quarter.

The Colonels of Nicholls State failed to find any offense throughout the half. Oregon State was also able to tack on a field goal on their next possession off a Trevor Romaine 22-yarder to go up 17-0. Then on the ensuing OSU possession, Mannion found the big 6'5" sophomore slot receiver Obum Gwacham for an 11-yard touchdown to take a commanding 24-0 lead. Though the Colonels were able to mount a last minute drive to score on a 12-yard touchdown pass with just :16 left to make it 24-7 OSU at halftime.

The Beavers went with the ground game in the 2nd half as HB Malcom Agnew struck paydirt on a 5-yard touchdown scamper to put Oregon State in front 31-7. However, the Colonels found some offensive success and stuck a 33-yard field goal attempt right through the uprights to make it 31-10. Though the Beavers went back to the ground game, eating up a lot of clock along the way. Agnew eventually found the end zone again on 7-yard touchdown run to put the Beavs up 38-10.

In the 4th quarter, the Colonels kept fighting and succeeded when QB#13 dumped it off to HB#7 on a screen that went the distance for a 39-yard touchdown to make it 38-17. With the Beavers in front with a commanding lead, head coach Mike Riley pulled out the starters, and surprisingly senior HB Jordan Jenkins took most of the carries instead of the promising redshirt freshman HB Storm Woods. Jenkins ran roughshod over the Colonels gaining an impressive 185 yards on the ground and scored on a 5-yard touchdown to put this one away with dominating 45-17 victory. Next up will be the Wisconsin Badgers here at Reser. Oregon State would love to avenge a 35-0 shutout at the hands of the Badgers last season.

          Nicholls State 17
          Oregon State 45
QB Sean Mannion: 17/26, 321 yds, 3 td, int

            #1 Alabama 0-0 (0-0) at #9 Michigan 0-0 (0-0)

Ann Arbor, MI - Michigan Stadium was rocking under the lights for a huge season opener between two of the premier progams in college football. The fans were not deterred in the least by the light drizzle but the Crimson Tide might have been. Alabama's opening possession was not pretty as the it came to an abrupt end when Bama QB AJ McCarron was sacked by Michigan DE Craig Roh. As a result, the Tide were forced to punt.

Michigan then took over and put together a long drive. Taking it all the way to the Bama 14-yard line. Facing 4th-and-one, head coach Brady Hoke decided to go for it. QB Denard Robinson was able to find FB Stephen Hopkins out of the backfield crossing over the middle where he was taken down at the 11-yard line for a Michigan first down!

However, the Wolverines would shortly face another 4th-and-one. This time at the 3-yard line. Again, Hoke kept the offense on the field. This time HB Vincent Smith got the handoff, exploded forward, and eluding a defender at the goal line for a touchdown! The run finished off an impressive 13-play, 68-yard drive. 7-0 Michigan.

Alabama now faced an even more raucous crowd and went three-and-out. Michigan appeared to be ready to go three-and-out also. That was until HB Vincent Smith got the handoff on a draw, and was able to fight forward for a 10-yard gain. Out came the chain gang. First down Michigan! Michigan Stadium roared. Heading into the 2nd quarter, Michigan seemed to be in control.

On 3rd-and-three from near midfield, Denard Robinson scrambled up the middle where juked past a defender for a highlight 14-yard gain. It would be just one of a dozen of scrambles for the dynamic signal caller.

The Wolverines continued to play old school smashmouth Michigan football. Taking right at that Bama front seven again and again. Eventually, HB Fitzgerald Toussaint struck paydirt on a 4-yard toss to the right and celebrated in the endzone to finish off a 13-play, 78-yard drive. 14-0 Michigan.

Alabama was now feeling the pressure. The Tide needed to do something before this game got out of hand. QB AJ McCarron hit WR Kenny Bell on short slant for a first down. Then on 3rd-and-three, HB Eddie Lacy fought forward to pick up another Alabama first down to silence the crowd a bit. Momentum seemed to be swinging. That was until Lacy was taken down in the backfield to set up a 3rd-and-long situation. McCarron then was forced to throw deep into double coverage where he was picked off by Michigan CB JT Floyd as the Big House roared back to life.

Michigan took over near midfield where they would face a crucial 3rd-and-10. But QB Denard Robinson was able to hook up with TE Brandon Moore for a big 26-yard gain out to the Bama 29-yard line for another Michigan first down.

On the next play, Alabama brought the head, but Robinson slung it to WR Jeremy Gallon who got behind the secondary and took it in for a 29-yard score. 21-0 Michigan.

Alabama's situation would actually get worse when on the next play of the ensuing possession, QB AJ McCarron was picked off by Michigan CB Blake Countess.

As a result of the turnover, Michigan took over at the Bama 30-yard line with still 2:03 left to go in the first half. The Wolverines would face another 4th-and-one. This time from the 7-yard line. Again Hoke kept the offense on the field. HB Fitzgerald Toussaint not only picked up the first down but rammed into the end zone for another Michigan touchdown. It would be 28-0 Michigan at halftime.

It had thus far been a one-sided game as Michigan just dominated Alabama in the first half. Nick Saban might have been able to light a fire wake his defending national champion Crimson Tide who were about to get run out of the building if something did not change in a hurry. The opening possession for Michigan did not go so well. Denard Robinson was sacked on third down, and the Wolverines were actually forced to punt.

However, whatever confidence Alabama might have regained was quickly lost when QB AJ McCarron was sacked in the end zone for a safety on the ensuing possesion. 30-0 Michigan.

Fortunately, Alabama's defense was able to hold Michigan to another three-and-out, but this was now turning into a laugher. On the ensuing Alabama possession, McCarron fumbled the ball in the pocket which the Wolverines recovered at the Bama 11-yard line.

The Tide defense was able to hold Michigan to a 25-yard field goal but Michigan was now up 33-0. Now that the game was out of reach, the Crimson Tide were finally able to put an offensive drive together into Michigan territory. But on 4th down at the Wolverine 31-yard line, McCarron's pass fell incomplete, and Alabama turned over the ball on downs just as the game entered the 4th quarter.

The 4th quarter dragged on. Denard Robinson finally made a mistake to show he was human as he was intercepted by Bama SS Vinnie Sunseri. Though Alabama's offense could do nothing with the turnover. Michigan missed a 43-yard field goal. Then both coaches pulled their starters and cleared their benches. Alabama's long nightmare finally would come to an end as Michigan pulls off a 33-0 stunner in the Big House over the #1 team in the land.
