Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Who? That's a team? Is it really just one hurricane? Does Tulsa, Oklahoma even GET hurricanes?
With the smallest undergraduate enrollment of all schools that participate in the NCAA Bowl Sub-Division, the University of Tulsa football team usually isn't the first team that comes to mind when you mention Oklahoma football. Hidden in the shadows of the highly successful University of Oklahoma() and Oklahoma State University, Tulsa has long been the red-headed step-child of collegiate football in the state of Oklahoma.
No more.
With such a large list of famous TU Football Alumni (HoF'er Steve Largent and Dr. Phil), you would think that the school would be able to consistently pull in top recruits from all over the country. It doesn't.
That's all about to change....hopefully. I mean, I really suck at recruiting on this game. So we'll see.
First Team Conference USA All American Trey Watts(left), Nebraska Transfer QB Cody Green, and Second Team C-USA All American Ja'Terian Douglas.
(Watts and Douglas combined for 1,764 yards rushing last season. Both are Juniors this year.)
The Golden Hurricane backfield is a force to be reckoned with. Featuring THREE All Americans (H-Back/Freak Athlete Willie Carter is a First Team National All American) and a 6-1 260 pound BULLDOZER in Alex Singleton lining up behind the QB, the running game should be QUITE potent. Cody Green and Trey Watts are "Star" players for the offense. Green is a Dual-Threat QB who can throw the ball quite accurately either in the pocket, or on the run. He'll have a large selection of WR's to throw to, including Senior Bryan Burnham and Junior Jordan James (with depth behind them in Sophomores Thomas Roberson and Keyarris Garret(a 6-4 207 pound redzone MONSTER).
The Hurricane offensive line is anchored by Senior Center Trent Dupy who is on the Rimington Award List for the second straight year. Tackles Brian DeShane and Jared Grigg will be holding down the edge, while Guards Stetson Burnett and Jake Alexander take care of the interior.
Strong Safety Marco Nelson
The Tulsa defense is strongest at the Linebacker and Safety positions, where they have speedy guys who can also embed your own facemask INTO YOUR FACE so that you look like Bane. OLB's Shawn Jackson and DeAundrae Brown lead the linebacking group while Strong Safety Marco Nelson(pictured above) and Free Safety Dexter McCoil(a 6-4 222 pound sledgehammer) patrol the defensive backfield. Defensive Ends Cory Dorris(C-USA All American) and Jared St. John provide a solid pass rush.
EDIT: Tulsa has decided to redshirt two players for the Fall 2012 football season- True Freshman QB Dane Evans, who looks to be the Golden Hurricane Starter in a couple years, and true Freshman WR Josh Atkinson. The athletic program feels that having both players take the year off will help them gain a better understanding of the new playbook that is being installed, and they can focus on their academic studies as well.
Golden Hurricane upset(in a very minor way) Iowa State
Since 1999, the University of Tulsa football team is 0-15 against Big 12 teams, with the average margin of defeat being almost 30 points(29.7). The first game of the 2012 season would put an end to that losing streak, as the Hurricane would come out of Ames with a 28-21 victory.
Junior transfer QB Cody Green would shine in his first game as a member of Tulsa, going 17-22 for 257 yards and 4 touchdowns. His favorite target was Jordan James, who had 4 catches for 113 yards and 3 td's(including the game winner with 1:19 left in the game). All four of James' receptions would come on third down, and helped TU move the chains. WR Bryan Burnham scored the games first TD on a ten-yard curl route, but he would only add one more catch throughout the duration of the game. The running game started terribly slow, with the offensive linemen not being able to hold their blocks long enough to help the RB's out. Trey Watts finally busted a long run of 77 yards to make his rushing total look respectable(19 carries for 126 yards. He had started out with just 49 yards on 18 carries.), while Ja'Terian Douglas had 10 carries for 61 yards.
For Iowa State, Senior QB Steele Jantz and Senior WR Josh Lenz hooked up 6 times during the game, resulting in 123 yards and a touchdown for Lenz, while Jantz finished 17-22 with 313 yards, 3 touchdowns and 2 int's. WR Aaron Horne had 5 catches for 98 yards and a touchdown, and Albert Gray had 2 catches for 41 yards and a TD. All three of Jantz' touchdown passes were gains of over 30 yards(two being 34 yards, and Lenz' catch being 80 yards), so Tulsa's defense had problem stopping the big play today. Coach Blankenship told reporters after the game that "We'll (the defense) be working on tackling all week in practice to ensure that these big plays don't happen during the Tulane game.". The linebackers and defensive line of Tulsa did their job stopping the run, as the Cyclones finished the game with 14 attempts for an absolutely horrid -9 yards. Yikes.
Dexter McCoil led the Tulsa defense with 7 tackles(3 fr loss), a sack, and a deflection.
MLB Jeremiah George led the Cyclones with 13 tackles(1 for loss), while ROLB Jake Knott caused a lot of havoc, finishing with 9 tackles(5 for loss) 3 sacks, and a forced fumble on the 1 yard line that Iowa State would recover.
Jake Knott forcing Alex Singleton (Tulsa's 6'1 260-pound RB) to fumble at the 1 yard line.
H-Back Willie Carter tries to go over the pile, but is yanked down by his ankles.
Tulsa Offense Stumbles, But Return Game Takes Charge
Tulsa University started it's C-USA schedule today, as the Golden Hurricane hosted the Green Wave of Tulane. After last weeks close win in which the defense gave up big play after big play, the Hurricane wanted to come out of the tunnel already up by 21. The opposite would take place. The first play of the game for Tulsa would see QB Cody Green throw an interception on his own 20 yard line, which would set up a 20 yard touchdown run for RB Orleans Darkwa of Tulane. Well shit. That's not how it's supposed to go, right? No worries though, as Tulsa would get the ball back after the kickoff....and Green would throw an interception to a defensive tackle. Not even a super athletic DE. A big, fat, defensive tackle jumped up and grabbed the ball out of the air. Well that's awesome. The TU defense would stiffen up, and not allow Tulane to get a td, so they settled for a field goal.
RB Orleans Darkwa "Tebows" after opening the game with a 20 yard TD run.
Start of the second quarter, Tulane up 10-0. The Hurricane offense would finally start to move the ball a bit through the air, and Cody Green found Bryan Burnham open in the endzone for a 15 yard TD. The defense holds Tulane to a three-and-out, and Ja'Terian Douglas stepped up and made a play, returning the punt 75 yards for a touchdown. 14-10 Tulsa. The Green Wave would kick a field goal on the following drive, force a Tulsa three-and-out, then drive down the field again and backup QB DJ Ponder would find a TE open in the back of the endzone for a 4-yard TD pass. 20-14 Tulane. But NOT SO FAST, MY FRIEND! The ensuing kickoff would bounce into the waiting hands of Jordan James 5 yards deep in the endzone, and he would shake off two tacklers and run the length of the field for a Golden Hurricane touchdown! Two return TD's in the same game for Tulsa, on a night when they needed it most. TU would head into halftime up 21-20.
WR Bryan Burnham shows determination as he pulls in his TD catch.
The second half would start out with both teams trading punts for most of the third quarter, until Ja'Terian Douglas ran for a 7 yard TD to put Tulsa up 28-20. The next drive, Tulane scores on a 35 yard TD pass to the backup RB Robert Kelly, and goes for two, but fails. 28-26 Tulsa. The following kickoff would clinch the game for Tulsa, as Jordan James would strike again, returning the kick 106 yards for another touchdown. Tulsa would add another field goal with 40 seconds left to put the final score at 38-26.
Tulsa Stats
Cody Green 7-15 118 yards touchdown 3 int's
Trey Watts 13 carries for 40 yards
Bryan Burnham 2 catches for 26 yards
Dexter McCoil 10 tackles, one for loss, 3 deflections
Jordan James 3 kick returns for 234 yards and 2 td's, Ja'Terian Douglas 3 punt returns for 115 yards and a 75 yard TD
DT Derrick Jackson 7 tackles, 3.5 sacks
Tulane Stats
Starting QB Ryan Griffin got hurt after one pass attempt, So DJ Ponder played the rest of the game and went 11-19 for 158 yards, 2 touchdowns and an int
RB Orleans Darkwa 8 carries for 40 yards and a TD, backup Robert Kelly 8 rushes for 54 yards
Robert Kelly led the team with 3 catches for 65 yards and a TD
MLB Trent Mackey had 11 tackles and a deflection, while ROLB Darryl Faley had 7 tackles and 2 INT's.
The drive from Stillwater, Oklahoma to Tulsa, Oklahoma is roughly 70 miles. A 1 hour and 15 minute drive is all that separates the Cowboys of Oklahoma State University and the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa. At the end of this game, a few feet would be the deciding factor.
The game would start out like usual for Tulsa's QB Cody Green- throwing the ball to the other team. There's just something about Tulsa's uniforms that makes him want to NOT throw it to his guys. Oklahoma State would take that turnover and squeeze a 49 yard field goal out of it. The Hurricane would gather their composure, drive the length of the field, and score on a 5 yard pass from Green to WR Keyarris Garrett. Not wanting to be outdone, the OSU offense returned fire as Junior QB Clint Chelf found Senior TE Justin Horton for a 24 yard TD strike with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. The only scoring in the second quarter would be a 33 yard Quinn Sharp field goal for OSU.
Jordan James makes a sweet catch over safety Zack Craig. James located the ball in the air and swung his body around the snag it over Craig's head.
The third quarter held little excitement for the fans...unless you like turnovers. Four interceptions in one quarter. One thrown by Cody Green, and 3 by Chelf. It was ugly. Two of the three thrown by Chelf happened in the RedZone, as CB Lowell Rose snagged one in the back of the endzone and MLB Donnell Hawkins snuck in front of a TE on the goal-line and picked it. Big stops by the TU defense. Heading into the fourth quarter, OSU had a 13-7 lead.
The lines get ready for a brawl just before Alex Singleton's TD run.
19 seconds into the fourth quarter, and TU would find the endzone on a 1-yard Alex Singleton run. The Hurricane defense would stop the Pokes and force a punt. Tulsa smashed their way down the field, and True Freshman Daniel Schwarz would kick a 30 yarder with 3:18 remaining to put TU up 17-13. Another three-and-out forced by the Tulsa defense would give the Hurricane the ball with a little over 2:30 to play. It wouldn't take long for Tulsa to score again, as Schwarz knocked in a 34-yarder with 1:41 left. But with the firepower that the Cowboys have, that's plenty of time...and they needed less than a minute to find the endzone, as Chelf connected with Freshman FB Dominic Ramacher from 2 yards away to tie the game at 20-20. Shit. Tulsa couldn't get anything going with the 47 seconds they had left, so the game would be going into overtime.
OSU wins the coin toss, so Tulsa gets the ball first. First down, 6 yard run by Trey Watts. Second down, Cody Green gets sacked for a 5 yard loss off of a playaction attempt. Third down and 9, Green would find Ja'terian Douglas coming out of the backfield....for 7 yards. TU settles for a field goal. The Hurricane defense had been pretty stout all game long, but all it takes is one play.
First play for the Cowboys, Clint Chelf finds Kevin Johnson wide open behind two defenders in the back of the endzone and lofts a beautiful ball over the TU defenders heads for the game winning touchdown.
Tulsa loses a heartbreaker to Oklahoma State 26-23 in overtime.
Kevin Johnson's game winning grab.
Cowboys celebrate at midfield.
Cody Green wondering what he needs to do to step his game up.
Tulsa Stats
Cody Green 12-20 146 yards 1 touchdown 2 interceptions
Trey Watts 21 carries for 113 yards
Keyarris Garrett 3 catches for 30 yards and a touchdown
Dexter McCoil 11 tackles, 5 for loss, 2 sacks, 3 deflections
Lowell Rose 5 tackles 2 interceptions 2 deflection
Oklahoma State Stats
Clint Chelf 22-37 350 yards 3 td's 4 int's
Kevin Johnson 4 catches 64 yards 1 touchdown
Caleb Lavey 16 tackles 4 for loss 1 sack
It was only a matter of time before I used that headline. I mean, it just fits. It also describes how todays game went between the Golden Hurricane and the Fresno State Bulldogs.
Game started in typical Hurricane fashion- Cody Green throwing an interception. I have no idea what the hell is going on with that. It's getting to be ridiculous. Tulsa would stop the Bulldogs and force a punt which would bounce into the endzone for a touchback. Very first play of Tulsa's second drive would prove to be quite nice, as Cody Green audibled out of a run play after seeing a corner blitz coming, and sent Bryan Burnham on a streak where the two would connect for a wide-open 80 yard touchdown. Another stop by the Tulsa defense would occur, and the Hurricane would put together a nice drive which ended with Green finding WR Ricky Johnson for a 45 yard touchdown on a Third-and-18. Fresno State would come back, however, and score their first touchdown of the game on a 5 yard run by Robbie Rouse with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
The second quarter would have back and forth punts until Freshman Kicker Daniel Schwarz kicked a 31 yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in the half. Fresno State would put together a drive that took the team to the 17 yard line, but disaster would strike on a Third Down and four for the Bulldogs. Derek Carr would audible into an option play, and chose the wrong time to pitch it, as Tulsa Corner Justin Skillens stepped in front of the running back, intercepted the ball, and took it 83 yards for a Tulsa touchdown with 52 seconds left before halftime. 24-7 Hurricane. Fresno State would scramble down the field, however, and kick a 54 yard field goal as time expired.
Justin Skillens intercepts the option pitch and houses that bitch.
Coach Bill Blankenship of TU decided to bench his starters at halftime to give other players some playing time. Short yardage/goal-line running back Alex Singleton would bust through the Bulldog defensive line for a one yard touchdown with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter. Tulsa kicks off, Fresno State returns it to the 26 yard line. Justin Skillens wasn't done yet. He wanted one more touchdown. First play of Fresno's drive, Derek Carr tries to throw a pass to Robbie Rouse in the flats, but Skillens tips the ball, picks it off, and takes it 26 yards for his second defensive touchdown of the game. Fresno State scored on an 11 yard touchdown pass with 48 seconds left in the third, but it wouldn't be enough. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Tulsa knocks off Fresno State 38-17.
Alex Singleton after his touchdown run.
Senior Corner John Flanders saves a touchdown by intercepting the ball as a giant egg hovers in the sky. Flanders had two INT's in the first quarter.

I've only seen a handful of plays by him..haven't gotten to watch a full game yet. I wanna see what he's all about. Are his runs from read options or does he take off and run from passing plays or what?
I've only seen a handful of plays by him..haven't gotten to watch a full game yet. I wanna see what he's all about. Are his runs from read options or does he take off and run from passing plays or what?
A lot of read options, but he'll do both. He is by far the toughest son of a bitch you will ever see play.
There's something wrong with Cody Green. He can't make it through the first quarter of a football game without throwing an interception or two. It always happens. His decision making is something that needs to be worked on..and quite heavily. Head Coach Bill Blankenship was so frustrated with his "Star" QB, that he benched him at halftime and let Kalen Henderson take over.
The first quarter of the game would see UAB score first with a 25 yard field goal on their opening possession. Tulsa would answer back, however, as Cody Green scrambled to the left and followed blockers into the end zone. 7-3 Tulsa
Cody Green diving into the endzone for a 13 yard TD run.
The second quarter would be uneventful until Tulsa scored a touchdown via a 36 yard touchdown pass from Green to Ricky Johnson with 2:12 left. TU would force a punt, and with 19 seconds left before halftime, Ja'Terian Douglas would take that punt 63 yards to THA HOUSE. 21-3 Tulsa
Ja'Terian Douglas Tebows after his 63 yard punt return touchdown.
UAB would start the second half by making a drive down the field and kicking a 45 yard field goal to make the score 21-6. Kalen Henderson would take the field as the Hurricane's quarterback, much to the surprise of Tulsa fans, and march the offense down the field with a heavy dose of Trey Watts and Willie Carter until the quarterback called his own number and executed a QB Draw play to perfection for a one yard touchdown run. 28-6 Tulsa.
Tulsa has the game locked up. Run the clock out. Get out of Birmingham, Alabama. Party. UAB had other plans, as backup QB Joe Bento found RB Darrin Reaves for a 41 yard touchdown from a screen play with 57 seconds left in the game. They go for the Two Point Conversion, and get it. Onside kick attempt goes their way also, as Tulsa WR Keyarris Garrett (normally a player with VERY solid hands), decides to headbutt the football right into the hands of a waiting UAB player. THA FUCK?! No worries, though. Nothing will happen. The Golden Hurricane defense will hold.
74 yard touchdown pass on a Fourth and 28, after the WR breaks 3 tackles. 27 seconds left. Oh. Yeah. Well. Ok. That's cool. Rock On. Onside kick again...AND THEY RECOVER IT FOR THE SECOND TIME. This time, though, Tulsa would end the game with a couple of sacks and head to the locker room victorious after a game that shouldn't have been a game.
