The Mariners ended their preseason with a record of 11-13. More importantly, since preseason records don't matter, they got to see how people would hit and pitch.

Surprises:
- Jason Bay: Maybe he still has it and just needed out of NY! An impressive average over 29 ABs. He may work to see some time this year if our corner outfielders don't step up (ala Morse/Saunders at .253)
- Justin Smoak: The Mariners haven't been sure what they want to do with Smoak yet as they have a few options at 1B/DH. He's earned himself an Opening Day start with his consistent spring.
- Furbush and Loe: Combining for 6 ER over 36.1 innings. That could be a great 1-2 punch to get to Wilhelmsen in the 9th, making it much easier on pitchers having to only go 6.

Disappointments:
- Saunders/Maurer: This is the M's 3-4 starters. A 7+ ERA is just unacceptable. Hopefully they were just working on different things and now know what works going into this season.
- Jesus Montero: This guy need to become an anchor in the Mariners lineup, and .238 won't do it. Tell me we got something of value for Pineda.

Things to look for:
• Mariners ace, Felix Hernandez, didn't have a great spring, but sometimes that happens with starters. The Mariners do need him to get off to a good start, though, as every team starts at 0-0. So as of now, the Mariners have a chance.
• The Mariners start the season with 14 straight games, getting right into the grind of things. The good news is that the first 10 are against the A's, White Sox, and Astros before they finish with a home series against Texas.

I agree, its just going to be hard to find him time. May result in roster moves later this season.

Why Seattle did it:
The Mariners weren't pleased with how Luetge looked during the spring. He is only 25 with a year of experience, but the lefty was in an organization with a bit of RP depth. Almonte is an OF with quite a bit of speed and is only 22. However, the Mariners are a bit higher on other CFs in the minors who boast more potential than Abraham.

Why Miami did it:
They need bullpen help (among other things. Luetge plugs right in to their major league roster if they so choose. The Marlins outfield is in dire straights with the exception of Stanton. Pierre and Ruggiano are both into their 30's now and they're looking to develop the future there. They were willing to spare a SP who was in a closer spot at AA.

(Editors Note: I traded for DeSclafani because I went to high school with him. I want to build him up and have him one day pitch in the pros hopefully. Can't wait to see how he does.)

Homers Abound in Season Opening Win, and Then Three Losses





King Felix had to battle through 3 tough innings before finally settling down and striking out 9.

The Mariners would then come back with a series of home runs to tie and eventually take the lead.

That left A's starter, Brett Anderson, frustrated beyond belief after the third home run left the yard.

All summed up by Saunder's home run in the 8th to cushion the lead.

Things to look for:
• Blake Beavan looks to turn around the recent trend of Mariners starters struggling. He needs to attack the top of the White Sox order, as the middle and lower thirds have been performing well thus far.
• Four games into the year, Franklin Gutierrez is already attempting to make noise to become an every day player for the M's. We'll need to see what he does in his opportunity against White Sox ace Chris Sale in game three.

Floyd Dominates M's, Mariners Return Favor on Sale



Flowers had a Web Gem nominee in the middle of the game with a beautiful diving catch on a pop up.

Seattle's Brendan Ryan returned the favor in the 7th inning, recording a forceout to end the inning that would have scored a run.

Chicago skipper Robin Ventura was happy with the Game 1 effort.

Floyd dominated in Game 1 before King Felix dominated in Game 2, and then the M's took the series in extra innings during Game 3.

Yep, probably playing one a series until September (If we're still in the race). I want to get through multiple seasons (which is why I waited for OSFM).

Things to look for:
• This is an important series for the Mariners to see if they can get back to .500 early on in the year. If they win the series 2-1, they will stand at 5-5 heading into a four game series with Texas.
• Game one against Houston is the Mariners home opener this season after seven games on the road to start the year.
• The Mariners will look to rest some players in Game 1, as they are about halfway through a 14 games in 14 days streak to begin the year.
