Cleveland Browns Sign Rookie MLB

AP Earlier today the Cleveland Browns added a young talent to their team that they hope, in the future, makes an impact on their squad. Young 23 year old rookie out of South Carolina University, Corey Miller, inked a contract with a prolific NFL team earlier today after being denied by his originally drafted team.

In the 1991 NFL draft Corey Miller (72 Ovr) was selected by the Washington Redskins with the 2nd round, 15th selection. The young talented middle linebacker was set to play second fiddle to starter Monte Coleman (87 Ovr). However just a few weeks later in free agency the Redskins couldn't pass up the opportunity to sign Eugene Lockhart (98 Ovr). As a result Corey Miller was the odd man out in a bloated roster, and didn't make it through the pre-season on contract as the Redskins cut down their roster numbers. Miller's shot was ended before it even started, as he contemplated careers outside of football.

But there was some hope, earlier last week a phone call from Cleveland Browns representatives said that they were looking for a person to replace their aging backup middle linebacker, Eddie Johnson upon his retirement. As Eddie Johnson (78 Ovr) enteres into his 10th NFL season it has become apparent that he's not as good as eh once was, as he backs up Mike Johnson (92 Ovr) who is 4 years younger than him at 28. With Eddie appearing to be on the way out of the league, the Browns are smartly looking for his replacement while they currently have the money. With over $20 million in cap room the Browns have decided to sign Miller to a 2 year $2.86 million dollar contract.

Now is his chance to try and finally capitalize in the NFL. If Miller can take advantage of his position, while it most likely won't be this season but next, then he may become a solid linebacker.

Colts Sign Former Bronco Running Back

AP - Earlier today the Indianapolis Colts signed a new member to their squad in 28 year old running back, Steve Sewell (76 Ovr). Sewell will give much needed depth to the Colts behind Eric Dickerson.

Sewell was originally drafted by the Denver Broncos in the 1985 NFL draft, where he had a solid rookie seasons playing in little time. He accumulated 275 yards and 4 touchdowns on only 81 carries, making it appear that he had a bright future ahead of him. However he would never accumulate those type of numbers as a rusher for the next four years as he had less carries from 1986-1989 combined than he did in his rookie season. In 1989 though he continued to show he had what it takes by surprising the Broncos as one of the teams better pass receivers. He caught 38 passes for 507 yards and 5 touchdowns, beating out some of the Broncos top receivers in the touchdown category. Sewell was a big reason that year that the Broncos were able to make it all the way to the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers, where they unfortunately were buried 55 to 10. Then last year Sewell had a personal breakthrough.

In 1990 Steve Sewell continued to play second fiddle to the Broncos starting runningback, Bobby Humphrey. However due to Humphrey's lack of stamina Sewell was able to get the most carries he has been given in his career to date. Sewell made the most of it as he totaled 483 yards on 157 carries with a touchdown. However apparently the Broncos didn't feel that this performance was enough to warrant a resigning as they let Sewell slip through the cracks in the off-season. Unfortunately for Sewell many teams around the league had the same sentiments of the Broncos and many talented backs were left sitting without a squad by the seasons start.

Then week 10 rolled around. The Indianapolis Colts had been scouting all season long to add another back to their team before the season ended, and it wasn't until the end of the 10th regular season week that the Colts were finally able to reach an agreement with a player, Steve Sewell. Sewell ended up signing a 1 year, $1.35 million dollar contract with a $250,000 dollar signing bonus, to play the rest of the season with the Colts. Sewell will challenged 31 year old Albert Bentley (78 Ovr) for the backup role to starter Eric Dickerson (95 Ovr). Dickerson will in no way be dethroned as he continues to impress each and every game he plays, but the Colts do have to worry about any injuries he may suffer, as well as the fact that he is about to reach his 30th birthday. Besides, the 1 year contract will give the Colts the flexibility to decide whether or not Sewell should stay on the team once the year is over, whether or not he will become their venerable backup or whether Albert Bentley will remain. Bentley does however had 2 more years than Sewell on his contract, but is coming at a higher price, and 24 year old Keith Clark (56 Ovr) appears to be being phased out by the Colts as they only have him on contract through the 1992 season.

The Colts have been less than impressed with veteran Albert Bentley whenever he's come off the bench for a fatigued Eric Dickerson. While he hasn't made any horrid mistakes it appears that in his 31 years of age he is loosing his explosiveness. If Sewell can take advantage of that and earn himself a spot on this franchise he may be rewarded in the future, as the Colts appear to be piecing together a solid team that may be able to contend sooner than expected.

A Hopefully Improved Young Returns to 49er Starting Lineup

AP - Many people around the league believe that Steve Young (84 Ovr) is the best quarterback to not be a starter in the league. However at 29 years of age, just how much longer does he have to make an impact in the league before it's too late?

Steve Young has quietly been mouthing off to reporters all year long about his lack of playing time. The veteran quarterback believes he is starting to feel underutilized in the 49ers offense. With this being a contract year for Young, who is costing the 49er franchise $9.45 million dollars to sit on the bench, many wonder why these two giants are still embracing each other.

Steve Young was originally picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of the USFL in the 1984 draft's 1st round. In 1986 he started for the Buccaneers to a lackluster 2,228 yards with 8 touchdowns and 13 interceptions but rushed for 425 yards and 5 touchdowns. However due to the horrendous ability of that 2-14 team it's a wonder that Young made it out of that season unscathed by injury. He immediately left Tampa Bay and signed a contract with the 49ers. In only 8 games with the 49ers in 1987 he threw 570 yards and 10 touchdowns, without a single interception. This remarkable feat in efficiency opened many eyes around the league as they began to realize that Young may have been held down in his previous chain of a team. The following season Young threw for 680 yards and 3 touchdowns with 3 picks, in a few starting games that showed he still had the capability to lead this team. Then the following year he had another breakthrough as he came in for an injured Joe Montana and threw for 1,001 yards 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions as well as ran in 2 touchdowns that year to help the 49ers stay on course for their eventual Super Bowl victory that season. Then last year the 49ers were in the same situation as Joe Montana went down with another injury mid-season. Young would finish off the year with 1,150 yards at a 61% completion rate and 6 touchdowns but with 7 interceptions. However a horrible turn of events saw him play badly in the 49ers wild card game against the surprising Green Bay Packers as Young struggled and ended up costing them the game with his 4 interceptions performance.

While some 49er fans are quick to point out his lack of playoff success, others point to the amazing effeciency he has shown at times, but both still agree that Joe Montana is their man, and are wondering why the 49ers aren't taking advantage of his stock and trading him. The 49ers organization seems content in turning a blind eye to the cries of Young as they continue to let him ride the pine in favor of Montana's perfection on the field. But for the third year in a row that tune is changing when the double-digit weeks arrive. For the 3rd straight year Joe Montana has gotten hurt late in the regular season. While this one isn't as serious as previous years as Montana has only suffered a pinched nerve that'll keep him out 3-4 weeks, it is still an injury non-the-less.

As a result Steve Young will once again be called upon to help keep the franchise gliding towards the playoffs, but this time Montana will be the one to start in those games. Whether or not these few weeks of play are enough to muzzle Young's demands has yet to be determined. There is one thing for certain, and it's that Young will be putting on a show in his few games. If it's for the 49ers organization, or another team around the league, will be something to keep an eye on this off-season.

Vikings Make Quarterback Switch

AP - After a two week warning was given to Minnesota Viking quarterback Rich Gannon (83 Ovr) was dropped on the depth chart in favor of Wade Wilson (79 Ovr) to finish off the year.

The Minnesota Vikings appear to be having yet another lackluster year as they sit a 2-7 record at the bottom of their division. Head coach Jerry Burns urged management to make the decision a few weeks ago in order to attempt to sever their loosing and get on the right track before all was lost. However they decided to give Gannon the bye week, and this weeks game to save his job. The result? Gannon threw 2 interceptions and 0 touchdowns as the Vikings were burned by their division rival Green Bay Packers 21 to 9. No sooner did that game end when Burns delightfully put Gannon on the bench and Wilson in the starting roll.

So far this season Rich Gannon has thrown for 1,573 yards and 5 touchdowns but with 13 interceptions, which leads the league (int). His horrible 60.5 quarterback rating is leaving a sour taste in Vikings fans mouths who are hoping for a miracle to help get them to at least a respectable 8-8 season with a 6-1 end the season. Gannon was the glaring problem that needing fixing and the Vikings are hoping that Wilson can fix it, although it hasn't been since 1988 that Wilson has had a positive season. If Wilson can return to his old form the Vikings may at least have a chance, as their run game is all that's keeping them afloat this year. With Herschel Walker running strong with 684 yards and 4 touchdowns, and his backup Terry Allen also playing well with 300 yards and 3 touchdowns, the Vikings run game is one of the better combination attacks in the league. But the 15 turnovers by Rich Gannon (13 interceptions, 2 fumbles) is causing them a few close games. When reached for comment Rich Gannon had the following to say about the decision.

"Well what can I say, I'm not happy about it, no. I mean who would be. But I understand why they're doing it. We're here to win, and we can't seem to do that so far. Maybe a change is what is needed. It's been hard out there. Wade's been in this offense for...what...eleven years. He might be able to pull some stuff off I can't. No hard feelings or anything, I just didn't play well enough to keep my job, it's the decision the front office made, and it's the decision they'll have to stand up for."Rich Gannon, Vikings Quarterback

Rich Gannon will once again find himself in a familiar place, the sidelines. Gannon has yet to start a full-season in the NFL despite spending the last 5 seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. The 26 year old has this year and one more season left on his contract, meanwhile 32-year old Wade Wilson has his contract ending at the end of the year. It appears if any season is going to force the Vikings to start Gannon it may be 1992. This year was a big test for Gannon, and unfortunately he might not have passed it. If Wilson can give the Vikings a little bit of hope than he may once again return in his old age to the Vikings starting role and be more successful the new addition of a top run game that he didn't benefit from before. Either way it's clear what position the Vikings are struggling at, but their solutions are getting lost in calculation.

Waddle Before You Can Walk

AP - The Cleveland Browns have made their second signing in as many weeks, fresh faces seem to be the new thing in Brown town. Last week the Browns signed rookie middle linebacker Corey Miller to their squad, and earlier today they added 24 year old wide receiver, Tom Waddle (71 Ovr).

Tom Waddle was picked up by the Chicago Bears in 1989 where he played his first NFL ball, and went relatively undetected with a single catch all year long for 8 yards, hardly rookie of the year material. When 1990 rolled around though, he found a new niche in the Bears offense that garnered him some attention around the league. Waddle coped with quarterback Jim Harbaugh to improve greatly in his 27 catch, 219 yard 1 touchdown performance in 1990. Waddle's ability to hold onto the football opened some eyes when he was sent into free agency this year. In the off-season Waddle tried out for three teams (Bills, Cardinals, and Cowboys). The Bills decided to address their wide receiver depth in the draft, the Cardinals went with Brett Perriman, and the Cowboys picked up ex-Cardinal veteran Roy Green to fill that slot. As a result Waddle was left alone to question his NFL future. It wasn't until week 10 that he was finally signed when the Cleveland Browns were looking for added depth on their roster.

The Browns ended up offering a 1 year, $1.51 million dollar contract with a $250,000 dollar signing bonus to the 24 year old wide receiver. Waddle gladly took the contract and will sit on the depth chart as the 5th wide receiver for the Browns, behind Vernon Joines (74 Ovr). Waddle will have an opportunity to overtake Joines for the 4th spot before the season is over, but this move was mainly done as insurance for the Browns who were worried about an injury to that position leaving them without a person to fill the gap.

The Browns are sitting pretty at 6-3 this season, just behind their division Bengals (7-2), and tied with the Steelers (6-3) in arguably the most competitive division this year. If the Browns head into the playoffs Waddle could prove effective for his depth if given the opportunity.

Sex, Drugs, & Injuries, Chicago's Rock Star Quarterbacks

AP - The Chicago Bears suffered an unexpected blow as a team this week when starting quarterback, Mark Vlasic (83 Ovr) suffered a partially torn ACL that will keep him out of action for at least four weeks. The Bears decided to name their starter as rookie quarterback, and USC great, Todd Marinovich (72 Ovr) but trouble arised.

The Chicago Bears made a surprising move upon Vlasic's injury when they decided to put rookie quarterback Todd Marinovich, instead of Jim Harbaugh (74 Ovr), in the game to start for the team when Vlasic went down early with an injury this week. Marinovich spent a few solid years as the USC Trojan's starting quarterback but was hit hard with allegations of rape and substance abuse earlier this season while he was still in college. This blow to Marinovich was a big reason for his drop in the NFL draft from where he was expected to go, but the Bears thought he had gotten through those problems in his life.

Marinovich entered into the game and played surprisingly well as he finished it with 9 of 14 passes for 97 yards and 1 touchdown, giving him a 108.3 quarterback rating, and a surprise performance to many Chicago fans. The Bears ended up winning the game thanks to Marinovich's late touchdown throw as they beat the Cleveland Browns 24 to 21. Last year's starter Jim Harbaugh just sat on the bench watching what should have been his opportunity slip away into Todd's grasp. However he couldn't expect what would happen just 72 hours later. Todd Marinovich was arrested by the Chicago Police Department on suspicion of growing marijuana in his home in large quantities. Marinovich is currently sitting in a jail cell as he awaits his plea in three days. This news sent a shock wave through Chicago who was just praising their newly acquired quarterback as the heir apparent to Mark Vlasic instead of Jim Harbaugh. But that praise would soon turn to disgust as the news of Marinovich's questionable acts hit the airwaves. The Chicago Bears organization had the following statement to release,

"It upsets our organization to find that Todd Marinovich is associated with such activities. As long as Marinovich is being held under investigation by the Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Bears organization will not recognize him on our team. Marinovich will be taken off the depth chart immediately, and Jim Harbaugh will be named the team's starter. We hope for Marinovich that this is merely a misunderstanding, but if the allegations are true, we will be forced to severe all ties with Marinovich."

Chicago Bears Front Office Response

The strongly worded response by the Chicago Bears front office made it clear that if true Marinovich will not be playing in a Bears uniform come season's end. Not to mention Jim Harbaugh will immediately be taking over at the quarterback position. With only one healthy quarterback currently on the roster for the Bears they may be forced to find a free agent to add to their team to meet the minimum requirements. However at this time that is the least of their problems as they are currently trying to decided whether or not Marinovich is correctly accused.

In the next few days Marinovich may see his potential NFL career crumble. If the allegations are true it will be the second serious offense that Marinovich has been accused of. It appears the Chicago Bears belief that Marinovich had changed his ways would have been pre-emptive, needless to say, it will be interesting to see how the Bears finish out the year with the breaking liability of this news.

Kramer Stepping In For Lions

AP - The Detroit Lions took a minor blow to their unexpectedly sucessful 1991 season when starting quarterback, Rodney Peete (81 Ovr), went down with an injury.

According to team doctors Rodney Peete bruised shoulder will probably keep him out of action for at least 3 weeks, if not 4. As a result the 7-2 Detroit Lions are looking to remain on top of their game as it appears they're making their way into the playoffs again on the legs of their star offensive player, Barry Sanders. However Peete hasn't done a bad job of playing with the Lions this season, he currently has 1,407 yards and 9 touchdowns, but with 13 interceptions. Instead, in his absence, backup quarterback Erik Kramer (73 Ovr) will be taking over the starting job for the next few weeks.

Erik Kramer was originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1987. During that year he saw some playing time as he racked up 559 yards in the air with 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, defiantly showing that he had the potential to be a solid player in this league. He started those 3 games for the Falcons during the NFL player strike, and as a result got his first exposure into the NFL as a 'replacement player' during said strike. Erik Kramer spent the past few seasons with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders before returning to the NFL with the Detroit Lions.

Kramer will definately have some talent around him as Barry Sanders has already cracked the 1,000 yard mark this season with 1,141 yards and 7 touchdowns. He'll also have the advantage of a solid Richard Johnson and Robert Clark receiving duo who seem to both be improving greatly this year. The only questionable part of Kramer's game will be the squad that resulted in Peete's injury, the offensive line. Peete has already been sacked 25 times this season, and on that 25th sack was when he suffered the bruised shoulder.

If Kramer can stay alive in the questionable Lions offensive-line, then he might be able to make an impact on the Lions team this season, or highlight himself for another team in the future. Kramer does have 3 more years on his contract, and Peete's contract also happens to end at the same time, only time will tell which of these two quarterbacks will be standing atop the hill at that moment. One thing is for sure, Kramer must fight this uphill battle these next few weeks if he wants to improve his chances.

Cowboys Sign Cornerback Eric Thomas

AP - Eric Thomas has suprisingly gone 11 weeks into the 1991 season without a team signing him. Thomas was a salary casualty in Cincinnati, where he played well for the past 4 seasons, but now he will join the Dallas Cowboys in a quest to get into the playoffs.

Eric Thomas is a 27 year old young cornerback who is just entering into the prime of his career. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnatti Bengals in the 1987 NFL draft. He had a solid rookie year as a nickle corner where he racked up an interception and a sack. However it wasn't until 1988 that he was given the chance to start on the Bengals squad, and he made the best of his opportunity. Thomas had a stellar season that saw him intercept 7 passes leading him to his first Pro Bowl season in only his 2nd year. In 1989 he continued his success but toned it down a little as he had 4 interceptions, including 1 that was returned for a touchdown. Then when 1990 rolled around the Bengals seemed content in having Lewis Billups and Carl Carter walk away with the #1 and 2 spots at corner, leaving Thomas to the nickle spot. He made the most of it as he managed to rack up 31 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 1 inteception, and 9 deflections. These solid numbers for a nikcle however were not enough to save Thomas as the Bengals did not deem his contract worthy of resigning. As a result he went and sat in free agency.

Due to the overwhelming talent at the cornerback position both currently on NFL franchises, and in the free agent market, Thomas ended up getting lost in the shuffle. It wasn't until earlier this week that he finally acquired a contract as he signed with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys definately seemed impressed by what they saw as the contract was a 3 year, $7.59 million dollar deal with a $870,000 dollar signing bonus. The contract will lock Thomas into the Cowboys team until the end of the 1993 season. Thomas currently sits 3rd on the Cowboys squad behind Isaac Holt (90), and Manny Hendrix (82). He already beat out Roland Williams (80) for the 3rd spot, and ads much needed depth at the cornerback position for the Cowboys.

It's obvious that the Dallas Cowboys are certainly interested in keeping Eric Thomas as a long term player. That is evident by the fact that they signed him to a 3 year deal, and felt that his talent was being wasted by not being on an NFL team. If Thomas can take full advantage of this opportunity, the way he did his sophmore year in Cincinnati, there's a good chance Thomas will be picking off teams that begin to regret not signing him, when they had the chance.

Career Over For Seahawk

AP - In their week 12 game against the Philadelphia Eagles the Seattle Seahawks were demoralized 38 to 16. But it wasn't the score that caused this demoralization, it was the loss of 25 year old Pat Tomberlin.

Pat Tomberlin spent his collegiate career at Florida State University where he made a name for himself as an offensive lineman. He was one of the more decorated offensive lineman. In his freshman year he was an AP All-American Honorable mention, as well as his sophomore season. But in his sophomore year he also won Football News Sophomore 2nd Team All-American nomination. In 1987 he earned the AP's 2nd Team All-American, and in his senior year earned Walter Camp 1st Team All-American, AP, Football News, Kodak, Sporting News, and United Press International, 2nd Team All-American honors. It was no secret that Tomberlin was skilled, and the Colts would take advantage of that by drafting him in the 1990 NFL draft.

With the Indianapolis Colts Tomberlin managed to win the starting job in his rookie season. He had a solid performance where he racked up 36 pancakes with only 6 sacks allowed all season, not bad for a rookie offensive lineman. However the Colts surprisingly did not sign Tomberlin to another contract, as a result he was sent to free agency where many teams vied for his services. The Seahawks ended up picking him up to a 4 year $6.72 million dollar contract to switch to right tackle and start over their draft right tacle rookie Ed King, in the hopes to improve. Tomberlin played great through the past 12 weeks, he has managed 25 pancakes and allowed the fewest sacks of all starting Seahawks lineman with 2. Then the suffering blow occurred in the 2nd quarter of the Seahawks game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Eagles saftey Andre Waters came in to blast through the line and drag down Chris Warren. But when he collided with Pat Tomberlin, Tomberlin would not stand up. Tomberlin suffered a ruptured disk, and was carried by doctors off of the field. Luckily the injury will heal over time, but it is clear that Tomberlin's injury is a career ending one as far as the NFL is concerned. Tomberlin was cut down before he reached his prime.

Pat Tomberlin was too emotional at his press conference to answer questions. He ended up calling it off at the last second. Tomberlin will leave a big hole in the Seahawks offensive line as they were looking forward to his progression making him one of the better lineman in the league. The healing process has only just begun for Tomberlin, but this is something that may heal physically, but will always be an open wound to Pat.

Wide Receivers Settings Records Around The League

AP - Earlier this week two team records were broken by a pair of the most prolific wide receivers currently playing the game. The Buffalo Bills Andre Reed, and the Los Angeles Rams, Willie "Flipper" Anderson.

Andre Reed has continued to play at a high level this season for the Bills. Him and Jim Kelly have been hooking up all year to make the Bills an 8-2 team that will easily soar into the playoffs. But Reed had a personal achievement this week when the Bills destroyed the New Orleans Saints 38 to 14. Jim Kelly managed to rack up 4 touchdown passes in the game against the Saints, 3 of which were all caught by Andre Reed. Reed's amazing game gave him the Bills record for most receiving touchdowns in a single game. Reed is easily on pace for a 1,000+ yard double digit touchdown season that'll most likely see him enter the Pro Bowl, but the Bills are currently searching for the more important bowl, the Super Bowl.

On the other hand there is Willie "Flipper" Anderson. Flipper already set a record in 1989 with the Rams when he caught 15 passes for 336 yards and a touchdown against the New Orleans Saints. Anderson set the league records for most catches in a game, as well as the most yards in a game, which has yet to be rivaled. The closest to breaking his record was that same year in 1989 as John Taylor caught 258 yards worth of passes. But Anderson decided to etch his name in the books against as he broke the Rams team record and caught 3 touchdown passes this week when the Rams destroyed the New York Giants 28 to 3. Willie Anderson is only 26 years old, and he is already establishing himself in the NFL record books. The fact that Anderson isn't even the top wide receiver on his own teams depth chart (Henry Ellard, 92 Ovr) proves just how demanding the Rams passing game is. If Anderson continues to play at this level he will easily make his way into the football hall of fame.

The talent at wide receiver is unimaginable in this time period. Andre Reed is consistent 27 year old wide receiver that is the corps of the Bills passing game. Meanwhile Willie Anderson is one of the most decorated sub-30 wide receivers to play the game, holding numerous NFL records. If these two receivers progress even further there is no doubt that their busts will be sitting in Canton.
