49ers Sign Running Back To Battered Squad

AP - The San Francisco 49ers are a team known for their prolific passing game, but their run game has been sorely overlooked due to the stardom at quarterback in Joe Montana. The 49ers are currently attempting to locate their new starting running back with the loss of Roger Craig in the off-season. Will Brent Fullwood be the man?

The 49ers have struggeld this season in the run game. They signed John L. Williams (82 Ovr) earlier this year to replace Roger Craig. So far Williams has played respectably but nowhere near the level that a Roger Craig is capable of. The backup to John L. Williams is Dexter Carter (80 Ovr) who the 49ers are happy with returning kicks, but the pint sized runningback doesn't appear to have the skills to be a full-time bruising back. Carter hurt himself a few weeks back with a foot stress fracture and hasn't been playing until this week where he finally re-suited up and ran back a few kicks. Finally the 3rd running back on the depth chart is Keith Henderson (70 Ovr) who was injured in last weeks game and will miss at least 7 weeks before he can return from injury.

With only two running backs on the roster the 49ers decided to sign 28 year old Pro Bowler, Brent Fullwood (81 Ovr). Fullwood was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1987 in the first round. He practically doubled his rushing yards each season in the NFL starting at 274 to 483 then 821. Then last season the Packers started Keith Woodside, cutting into Fullwood's production as he only ended with 334 yards on the season. Feeling boxed out in Green Bay he decided to not resign with them and see if he could have better luck elsewhere. Unfortunately for Fullwood there were few openings around the league, and he proceeded to sit unsigned until just now, week 13. Fullwood has signed a $7.96 million dollar contract with a $1.64 million dollar signings bonus to spend the next 4 season with the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers think that Fullwood may even be a better option than John L. Williams. Williams is still obviously the starter for the 49ers, but don't be surprised if you see a switch made in the next few weeks.

Fullwood is being given another chance on another NFC team to get things done on the ground. If he can wrestle the starting job away from John L. Williams he could easily be the 49ers starter for the following 1992 season. If the 49ers don't see the production they want from him or Williams, both of them may end up sitting on the bench as they look into free agency, or the draft, for a solution.

      Oilers Clinch Division Title

AP - Maybe the fifth time is the charm for the Houston Oilers, as they have just clinched their division title, making it the 5th year in a row that the Oilers have made the playoffs. Last years AFC Champions are looking forward to repeating that title this season as they currently sit with a 11-1 record.

The Houston Oilers last season had the advantage of a regular season MVP performance by Warren Moon to bring their team to a 12-4 season with 4,000+ yards passing and 32 touchdowns. Oilers fans felt that 1991 was Super Bowl or bust with the way they were playing. Much to the elation of Oiler fans they did in fact make it to the Super Bowl where they faced off against the Philadelphia Eagles. However the Oilers lost in a heart-breaking final touchdown throw with mere seconds left on the clock, leaving a bitter taste in their collective mouths.

In the off-season the Oilers did their best to improve their already talented squad of players by adding running back, Bo Jackson. Jackson is on pace to be the Oilers first 1,200+ yard runningback since Earl Campbell back in 1983. With the addition of the running game the Oilers offense has become multi-dimensional, taking a lot of the pressure off of Warren Moon. Which may be the reason the Oilers record appears that it will eclipse last seasons.

Needless to say the Houston Oilers are going to enter the 1992 playoffs with a chip on their shoulder. The Oilers window of opportunity is slowly closing, as Moon is 34 years old this season. If they don't strike now while they're ranked as the best team in the NFL, then they won't be given a second opportunity in this league. If you don't strike while the irons hot, then you don't deserve it in the first place.

Chargers Running Back Next Big Thing?

AP - Earlier this week San Diego Chargers running back, Marion Butts ( Ovr) broke the franchise record for most rushing touchdowns in a single game with his amazing 135 yard 3 touchdown performance over the Dallas Cowboys. Butts has continued to solidify himself as a talented runner in the NFL, does he have what it takes to put his name with the elite?

Marion Butts was originally drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the 1989 NFL Draft. Due to an injury to the Chargers starting running back at the time, now turned fullback, Tim Spencer, Butts was given the opportunity to start in his rookie season. Making the most out of his 170 carries he racked up 683 yards, giving him a 4.0 yard per carry average and an outstanding 9 touchdowns throughout the season. The Chargers finished the year with a lackluster 6-10 record, but had high hopes for the following season.

In 1990, his first full starting year, Marion Butts exploded to one of the best seasons in the league by any current back. Butts had 372 carries with an improved 4.2 yard per carry average, totaling 1,565 yards on the ground. To top it off he eclipsed his previous best by adding 10 touchdowns on the ground. He also caught the ball for 299 yards and 3 more touchdowns. His 1,864 yards and 13 total touchdowns vaulted the Chargers offense into one of the more formidable ones in the league. Butts wounded up heading to his first ever Pro Bowl in 1990 and under head coach Dan Henning and on the back of Butts the Chargers ended that season with one of the league's best records at 12-4. They made a strong contention in the playoffs but ended up not going to the big game. However suddenly Butts name was vaulted into stardom. Teams were unexpectant of the outstanding play of this young running back and are forced now to rethink their defensive schemes in order to compensate for his ability when they play the Chargers.

In 1991 the Chargers offense has slowed down a little, the compensation for a new starting quarterback in Marc Wilson over last years breakout Mark Vlasic, has made the passing game less explosive, allowing defenses to focus in on Butts run game. Not to mention Butts no longer has the element of surprise when playing as teams now key on him as the big playmaker on the Chargers offense. Through week 14 the Chargers are sitting at 7-6 fighting with the Broncos and Raiders for a potential wild-card spot. Certainly a far cry from last years 12-4, but still a dangerous young team. In those 14 weeks of play Butts has accumulate 1,183 yards on the ground and 7 touchdowns. He seems on pace to at least come near to matching his previous season totals. If Marion Butts keeps up this consistancy he may easily go down in Chargers history.

The San Diego Chargers have been a passing team for the majority of their exsistance. In fact the Chargers have never had a back-to-back 1,000 yard season by a single back ever in franchise history. In fact, the Chargers have never had a 1,000+ yard running back in two consecutive seasons, regardless of whether or not it was the same person. That is until Marion Butts achieved it this year. With his 1990 and 1991 campaigns Butts has become the first Charger to ever have back-to-back 1,000+ yard rushing seasons, as well as the first time the Chargers franchise has had a 1,000+ yard runner on the roster in back-to-back years.

Butts has already earned his place in Charger fans hearts as one of the best backs to be playing the game, but he'll need to bring his case to the rest of the league next year. If Butts remains consistently effective like he has been these past two seasons then he may very well hear his name being uttered amongst the top in the league.

            Buffalo Bills Triplets Outperforming

AP - The hottest team in the NFL right now is arguably the Buffalo Bills. The Bills currently have an 11-2 record, only loosing to the Chargers in week 2, and the Patriots in Week 11. The main focus lately has been on the outstanding play of their three key offensive players, wide receiver Andre Reed, running back Thurman Thomas, and quarterback Jim Kelly.

Andre Reed has been an established talent at wide receiver for a few years now. He was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1985, but didn't start playing as the teams #1 wide receiver until the 1988 season, and the team hasn't looked back since. Andre Reed has really been scorching up the turf this year, especially since Week 12. The entire team has seemingly been charged by their loss to the Patriots and in Week 13 against the New Orleans Saints Andre Reed made 3 touchdown catches. So far this season Reed has 62 receptions for 1,067 yards and 8 touchdowns. Reed is creeping up the all-time lists, and especially the franchise list, all he needs to add to his repertoire is what the entire team is searching for, a ring.

In the backfield however Thurman Thomas has been running through and over defenses all year long, but in the past few weeks he too has had some of the best games of this season. Thomas showed his versatility in Week 12 against the New Orleans Saints when he not only ran the ball 26 times for 95 yards and a score, but caught 5 passes for 52 yards. Then he followed it up with a near equal performance in week 13 against the Miami Dolphins with 25 carries fro 80 yards and a score, as well as 4 catches for 48 yards. Thomas and the Bills destroyed the Dolphins, 37 to 0. Then this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the Bills defeated them 41-7 as Thomas ran for 114 yards and a touchdown with 43 yards receiving. So far this season Thurman Thomas has racked up 1,353 yards on the ground with 12 touchdowns putting him tops in the league for rushing. But what he has going for him is his duality and ability to catch the football. So far this year he has 44 catches for 404 yards and 2 touchdowns. Thomas may end up finding himself in contention for the MVP award this season with players like Warren Moon, last years MVP, Barry Sanders, Jerry Rice, and even teammate Jim Kelly.

Quarterback Jim Kelly has took the Bills on his shoulders and showed the leadership skills that are needed for a team of this caliber. Kelly has exploded particularily in the past two weeks. In week 13 he threw for 413 yards and 3 touchdowns, and then followed it up with another amazing performance against the Buccaneers with 286 yards and 4 touchdowns. In the past two games he has thrown 54 of 71 passes, which was a league leading 76% completion percentage, with 699 yards, 7 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. So far this season Jim Kelly has dominated the league and has thrown for 3,513 yards and 31 touchdowns. Jim Kelly is also a runner for the regular season MVP award this season along with teammate Thurman Thomas. Kelly is in a head-to-head race with Joe Montana, Jim Everett, and Warren Moon for the top quarterback spot so far this season. If Kelly continues this defensive domination it will be hard pressed to see a team defeating the Bills in the playoffs.

The Final unsung hero of the Buffalo Bills is their less talked about defense that has done an amazing job. With the likes of Bruce Smith, Darryl Talley, Shane Conlan, Nate Odomes, and Leonard Smith the Bills have been shutting down high powered offenses left and right. In the past three weeks alone they have shut down offensive machines like Eric Martin, Dan Marino, The Marks brothers, and Roger Craig. Against the Saints, Dolphins, and Buccaneers, the Bills have outscored their opponents 116-21. Between the defense, and their offensive powerhouse, it will take a mighty force to stop them in their tracks come playoff time.

Montana Makes Magic Since Returning From Injury

AP - Earlier this season Joe Montana was out hurt for a few weeks with a pinched nerve. He was leading the league in every statistical category possible for quarterbacks, but the past 3/4 weeks without Montana has made his lead drop. Montana returned to the lineup with the 49ers in Week 14 and has been destroying defenses where he left off.

In Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams Joe Montana had a great game in his first one back from injury. In his first game back he threw 45 passes with a 64.4% compeltion percentage. He also managed to torch the Rams defensive backfield for 375 yards and 3 touchdowns. Montana did not make a single mistake that day as he had no fumbles and no interceptions. However a lack of a running game and some let up by the 49ers defense was their downfall. Despite the amazing 31 point output by the 49ers offense, they lost 34 to 31 to the Rams.

Then earlier this week in Week 15 of the regular season Montana replicated and improved upon his previous performance against the Phoenix Cardinals. However this time the 49ers would go home with the win 38 to 26. Joe Montana was nearly exact with 29 of 44 passes for a 65.9% completion rate. He eclipsed the 400 yard mark with 412 on the night and once again repeated with 3 touchdowns on the night and no picks.

In the past two weeks Joe Montana has thrown for 58 of 89 passes for a 65.2% completion rate with 787 yards and 6 touchdowns without adding a single interception. Granted the 49ers came out of those two games at 1-1 making their overall record 9-6 on the year so far.

The 49ers have found themselves in an unfamiliar position as they're fighting for a wild card playoff spot. The 49ers usual success normally puts them up and over playoff expectations, but there is a key game coming up for the team. Luckily for the 49ers Week 16 is a bye week. However whether or not thats good for rest or bad for cooling Montana's hot streak, will have to be seen in Week 17 when the 49ers take on the Los Angeles Rams (10-4) for not only a wild card spot but potentially their division title. If Joe Montana can keep bombing passes all day long against tough defenses then the 49ers will easily find themselves upsetting the Rams in week 17. But if he doesn't then they will be hard pressed to have Brent Fullwood and Dexter Carter take the bulk of the load and carry the team to the playoffs.

Peete Returns From Injury, Kramer Still Starting

AP - Earlier this season in Week 11 the Detroit Lions starting quarterback, Rodney Peete (81 Ovr) was injured. The Lions had been on a role, but as usual, thanks to the amazing play of running back Barry Sanders. When Peete went down the Lions took the opportunity to start backup quarterback Erik Kramer (72 Ovr) over last years highly touted rookie heisman winner, Andre Ware (69 Ovr). That decision seems to have paid off.

The Detroit Lions have been pleased with the performance of Erik Kramer ever since putting him into the starting role. So far he has lead the Lions valiantly to a 3-2 record in the past 5 weeks. They managed to have some key victories over some of the best teams in the league in the Buccaneers, Steelers, and Bears. Erik Kramer has certainly out performed Rodney Peete in one key factor, turnovers.

Rodney Peete has struggled all season long as the Lions quarterback. He has not lit things up, but at the same time he hasn't played as badly as other quarterbacks like Rich Gannon of the Vikings. So far this season Peete has thrown 109 of 220 passes for a lackluster 49% completion percentage. With those came 1,407 yards and 9 touchdowns with 13 interceptions on the season as well as 2 fumbles. Peete's 15 turnovers have cost the Lions some key moments in games that they won't be getting back. However so far Erik Kramer has faired much better.

With Barry Sanders still taking the majority of the weight on offense, Kramer was let to develop at the quarterback spot during Peete's absence. Kramer then proceeded to win 3 of his 5 games and throw for 787 yards and 4 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. Kramer did what he was paid to do, not loose games, for the Lions. However when Peete stated that the doctors had cleared him to return to the field, head coach Dan Henning made an interesting decision when he said that they are going to keep Erik Kramer as their starter. While Peete's record as a starter this year wasn't bad, apparently his statistical output was enough for Henning to make the switch. Peete was disturbed by the lack of faith that his squad has put on him when they too agreed with the decision.

Peete and Kramer both have 2 years left on their contracts with the Detroit Lions. It appears that Kramer's solid play in Peete's injury absence has brought a new quarterback controversy to the fore front. Originally it seemed that Peete had the job locked and squared away but Kramer's abilities are not letting that happen. Erik Kramer will be leading this Lions team into the playoffs this season, and that could have a large effect on whether or not he remains the teams starter come next season. Meanwhile Rodney Peete is going to have to sit on the bench and hope for the best as his team seems to move without him.

                    Playoff Picture Still Blurry

AP - Right now the parody in the league is thick as there are only two teams in the NFL that are officially going to go into the playoffs come Week 16 of the regular season, the Houston Oilers (12-1) and the Buffalo Bills (11-2). What will the 1991 playoff picture look like? That's hard to tell.

It's obvious that the Houston Oilers and the Buffalo Bills are the dominant power house teams in the NFL at the moment. These two AFC teams have been taking down anybody they play against all year long. The Oilers have Warren Moon and Bo Jackson shoring up the offense, meanwhile the Buffalo Bills have their triplets of Jim Kelly, Thruman Thomas, and Andre Reed. This is obviously enough for both of those teams to easily skip the wild-card round and come that closer to making it to the Super Bowl. But after those two teams it gets blurry as to who is going to pull through.

It is unclear as to who is the best team in the NFC at the moment, record wise it would be a tie between the Los Angeles Rams and the Detroit Lions who are both 10-4, but those numbers may be deceiving. The Rams do have a high powered passing game with Jim Everett launching balls all season long to Henry Ellard and Willie "Flipper" Anderson. However they have an untested young rookie that's starting at running back in Ricky Watters. While Watters may be making a case for himself as rookie of the year, that doesn't mean he is one of the better backs in the league. Watters doesn't have important playoff experience which may end up costing the Rams. The Rams certainly have the defense with Kevin Greene, Darryl Henley, and Darrell Fullington highlighting it. But at times the secondary can find themselves in some trouble, like when they faced the San Francisco 49ers. As well as the fact that their trenches are weak in comparison to some of the other teams in the league.

The Detroit Lions are interesting since they've played so well with the likes of Barry Sanders tearing up defenses and quarterback Rodney Peete barely keeping the pass game alive. The quarterback switch by the Lions from Peete to Kramer has done two things. It has statistically led to a better passing game, but at the same time a 3-2 record is not as flashy as Peete's 7-2. Kramer obviously has not been tested in the playoffs and will need to at least stay as efficient and not make more mistakes then positives like he has so far. Sanders will easily carry that team as he has done for the past few seasons. The Lions defense is questionable outside of their star linebacker, Chris Spielman. They're pass defense is troublesome and against the high power-armed quarterbacks in the playoffs that may end up being their downfall.

In the middle there is a glut of teams that are attempting to fight their way into the playoffs. With other 10-4 teams like the Cincinnatti Bengals looking like they could surprise nothing is certain. The Cowboys, Dolphins, and Steelers are all sitting pretty at 9-5. Their victories and losses in the next few weeks will be integral in deciding whether or not they will be a wild card or a divisional round playoff team. The Steelers are going to struggle with the Browns (8-6) and Steelers in the same division. Meanwhile the Dallas Cowboys are one of the better NFC teams despite their young offense. But a 6-1 spurt over the past 7 weeks has brought many eyes on them. Quarterback Troy Aikman has been picking up his play of late and running back Emmitt Smith has been remaining consistent. They could easily be a surprise team in the playoffs.

Finally the wild-card spots are being cluttered up by 8-6 teams like the Chargers, Patriots, Eagles, Browns, Raiders, Seahawks, and 49ers. The Chargers, Eagles, Seahawks, and 49ers were all playoff teams last year in 1990, and it is surprising that the 49ers and Eagles are barely fighting to get in after an amazing 49er season, and a Super Bowl championship by the Eagles. Right now these teams have the most to loose by not winning their games in the following weeks. Luckily for the 49ers they only have to take on the Rams in the final week since they have a bye in Week 16. The Eagles however have some tough games against the Redskins and Cowboys in order to return in 1991 to the playoffs. The Chargers were surprising that they've managed to sneak in since having some trouble in their passing game this season. Marion Butts has definitely kept up on the ground for them, and their defense has remained strong against the rush and pressuring the quarterback. But the loss of Vencie Glenn seems to have hurt the Chargers secondary as they have struggled this year in comparison to last season. The Seahawks also have a bye week, like the 49ers, in Week 16, but then they'll have a key must-win game against the current best record Houston Oilers.

The people on the outside looking in are 7-7 teams like the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Giants, and Indianapolis Colts. While they could make the playoffs it would require any of these teams to win both of their next two games outright. The team with the best chance is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who have a bye week in the final week of the season, meaning they only have to win Week 16's game against the Miami Dolphins, a 9-5 team, that'll be no easy task. Obviously the addition of Roger Craig to their run game has completely transformed that team as they are now fighting for a playoff clinch.

The only 6-8 team with a long shot of making the playoffs are the Washington Redskins. However it would require numerous instances for that to happen. The Redskins would have to win both their games, this week against division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, and next weeks game against the Los Angeles Raiders. Then they would have to have both the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, and the Dallas Cowboys loose their next two games. It certainly is a long shot that it would occur, but there is still a chance none-the-less. If Jeff Hostetler and Rodney Hampton can do that it would be a miracle as these Giants players have certainly been criticized for not being Phil Simms and Ottis Anderson this season in both of their first times starting.

Many teams may find themselves being upset by a surprising squad, or they may end up rightfully entering into the playoffs. But one thing's for sure, the next few weeks will be electrifying.

Brister Will Miss Rest Of Season

AP - In the Week 16 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots the Steelers barely won on the leg of Gary Anderson 9 to 3. However the victory was bitter sweet for Pittsburgh as it helped vault them into the playoffs earning them a playoff birth, but at the cost of their starting quarterback, Bubby Brister (93 Ovr).

Bubby Brister was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1986 draft. The third round draft pick would eventually win the starting job for the Steelers in 1988 where he'd struggle with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions on 13 games. The following season he had 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with 2,365 yards, once again falling short of expectations. But in 1990 Brister had his breakout year as he threw for 2,852 yards at a 61% completion rate. He managed to overcome his turnover woes with 21 touchdowns and only 13 interceptions on the season, leaving him with a quarterback rating of 82.6. Bubby Brister managed to lead the Steelers to an 11-5 record that saw them enter into the playoffs. This year was no different as Brister would suffer from deja vu.

Bubby Brister has played very well for the Pittsburgh Steelers team this season. He started out the year on fire with the rest of his teammates. After loosing the season opener to the Bengals, the Steelers proceeded to win 5 straight before finally loosing again. Currently the Steelers are sitting, once again, at 11-5 with a bye in the final week of the season. Officially clinching their playoff spot this week. Brister dropped off a little from last year however in terms of his scoring ratio. He had the exact same 61% completion rate showing he was still deadly accurate with 2,879 yards so far this season. However he has only accumulate 19 touchdowns with 18 interceptions on the season, dropping his quarterback rating to 77.9. But that all came crashing down earlier this week when Bubby Brister suffered a dislocated ankle at the hands of the New England Patriots, late in the 4th quarter. After consulting numerous team doctors it was discovered that the dislocated ankle will probably keep Brister out for the remainder of the NFL season, leaving his recovery to occur mid off-season. As a result the Pittsburgh Steelers fans let out a disappointed sigh as it would appear their 11-5 team will once again fall short in the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Steelers do however have a backup that has piqued interest around the league in Stan Humphries (77 Ovr). The young 26 year old quarterback is looking to make a name for himself and it will be interesting to see how he can produce. The 3rd year quarterback will be seeing his toughest challenged this year as he will attempt to put the Steelers deep in the playoffs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have shown their consistancy this year by repeating last season's 11-5 record. Once again earning the team a spot in the playoffs. However it came at the high cost of a season ending injury to Bubby Brister. This is the time for the young backup quartyerback, Stan Humphries, to shine. He'll need to outperform his expectations in order to keep this competative franchise in the Super Bowl hunt.

Kansas City Chiefs Sign John Carney

AP - One of the most important, but often overlooked, positions in the NFL is the kciekr position. The Kansas City Chiefs have had the luxury of having kicker Nick Lowery (99 Ovr) since 1980. However earlier this week the Chiefs had to make a signing in order to compensate for Lowery's injury.

The Chiefs have been using Nick Lowery as their kicker since 1980. The 35 year old was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in 1978 and has established himself as one of the more accurate kickers in the league. Having Lowery on the squad has alleviated a lot of worrying by the Chiefs front office as they have always been able to count on him to play well and be there for the team. However earlier this week he sufferd an injury that kept him out of the team's season finale. The Chiefs still won decisively 27 to 7 against the New York Jets, but it brought an issue to the fore front. The fact that, as mentioned, Lowery is 35 years old. Lowery is slowly creeping up on the end of his professional career. As he eclipses 35 years this season the Chiefs just realised that they are going to have to quickly start thinking about a replacement. Not to mention if another situation like this weeks injury were to happen down the line they'll be prepared. So as a result the Kansas City Chiefs went searching for a backup.

The Chiefs found what they were looking for in young 26 year old, John Carney (70 Ovr). Carney was originally picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1988, where he kicked only 2 of 5 field goal attempts that season. In 1989 Carney didn't kick a single field goal, and was released by the team. In 1990 John Carney ended up signing a contract with the Los Angeles Rams, however he would sit on the bench backing up Mike Lansford (83 Ovr). There were two situations in the year when Carney came in to kick as Lansford missed a single game that season, and Carney ended up hitting 1 of the 2 field goals. Upset once again with his situation Carney left Los Angeles in the hopes of tagging along with another franchise. However he ended up not being signed in the off-season and was eagerly awaiting the news during the regular season to be signed. Unfortunately for Carney he would not be signed until the regular season was over, and by the Chiefs, a non-playoff team. Carney gladly took the 1 year $670,000 dollar contract with a $90,000 dollar signing bonus to spend 1992 as the backup for Nick Lowery.

John Carney however will have to be at the top of his game if needed because he has essentially spent an entire season out of the NFL. If given the opportunity in the near future Carney may finally be given the chance to show the league what he can do, and whether or not he can become the next Lowery.
