49ers Sign Running Back To Battered Squad
AP - The San Francisco 49ers are a team known for their prolific passing game, but their run game has been sorely overlooked due to the stardom at quarterback in Joe Montana. The 49ers are currently attempting to locate their new starting running back with the loss of Roger Craig in the off-season. Will Brent Fullwood be the man?
The 49ers have struggeld this season in the run game. They signed John L. Williams (82 Ovr) earlier this year to replace Roger Craig. So far Williams has played respectably but nowhere near the level that a Roger Craig is capable of. The backup to John L. Williams is Dexter Carter (80 Ovr) who the 49ers are happy with returning kicks, but the pint sized runningback doesn't appear to have the skills to be a full-time bruising back. Carter hurt himself a few weeks back with a foot stress fracture and hasn't been playing until this week where he finally re-suited up and ran back a few kicks. Finally the 3rd running back on the depth chart is Keith Henderson (70 Ovr) who was injured in last weeks game and will miss at least 7 weeks before he can return from injury.
With only two running backs on the roster the 49ers decided to sign 28 year old Pro Bowler, Brent Fullwood (81 Ovr). Fullwood was originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1987 in the first round. He practically doubled his rushing yards each season in the NFL starting at 274 to 483 then 821. Then last season the Packers started Keith Woodside, cutting into Fullwood's production as he only ended with 334 yards on the season. Feeling boxed out in Green Bay he decided to not resign with them and see if he could have better luck elsewhere. Unfortunately for Fullwood there were few openings around the league, and he proceeded to sit unsigned until just now, week 13. Fullwood has signed a $7.96 million dollar contract with a $1.64 million dollar signings bonus to spend the next 4 season with the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers think that Fullwood may even be a better option than John L. Williams. Williams is still obviously the starter for the 49ers, but don't be surprised if you see a switch made in the next few weeks.
Fullwood is being given another chance on another NFC team to get things done on the ground. If he can wrestle the starting job away from John L. Williams he could easily be the 49ers starter for the following 1992 season. If the 49ers don't see the production they want from him or Williams, both of them may end up sitting on the bench as they look into free agency, or the draft, for a solution.
