baseballchampion's Minnesota Vikings CFM as owner Ryan Hudson

The Minnesota Vikings come into the 2013 season off a 10-6 finish and a Wild Card round loss to the rival Green Bay Packers. The season was a major statement for running back Adrian Peterson, who finished with 2,097 rushing yards, just eight shy of the single-season record set by Eric Dickerson. Quarterback Christian Ponder was serviceable, finishing with a completion percentage of 62.1 and 2,935 yards. However, he is a question mark coming into 2013, having missed the only playoff game the Vikings played. The signal-caller from that game, Joe Webb, was switched to being a wide receiver during the offseason. The Vikes brought in Matt Cassel, who will be the team's starting quarterback for week one. Cassel has been a mid-level quarterback for his entire career, so the quarterback position is a weakness for the team. Gone is last year's leading receiver Percy Harvin. To counter this, the Vikings drafted Cordarrelle Patterson out of Tennessee, and signed Greg Jennings to a five-year, $35M contract with a $10M bonus.

Lifelong fan Ryan Hudson purchased the Vikings during training camp, and made waves during the preseason when he announced that the team would be moving to Los Angeles at the end of the season, and would be called the Los Angeles Aftershocks. It is up to the Vikings to build off of last year's solid season and this year's perfect 4-0 preseason to try to attract their new fan base as they say farewell to the Metrodome.

The Vikings will be in a fight for the playoffs, as the NFC North has grown stronger this year. In addition to the Aaron Rodgers-led Packers, the Bears have Jay Cutler manning the offense, with Matt Forte in the backfield, and Julius Peppers on defense, they signed Martellus Bennett to play tight end. Meanwhile, the Lions have arguably the best receiver in the NFL in Calvin Johnson, and signed Reggie Bush to take over in the backfield, drafted Ezekiel Ansah to replace Cliff Avril on the defensive line, and signed kicker David Akers.

DETROIT, MI -- "He was just in beast mode today. There was no stopping him. Whenever he has a game like that, its almost a guaranteed win."

Those were Leslie Frazier's words to FOX sideline reporter Pam Oliver after the game in response to the monster 154-yard day that Adrian Peterson had Sunday against the Lions. ESPN's Ed Werder caught up with Peterson in the tunnel on his way to the visitors' locker room.

"I was just trying to keep moving the ball forward, keep moving those chains and get us that win. Didn't even know what kind of day I had until coach told me after the game. Just wanted to get out of here with that win and we got the job done."

Peterson was great, which was needed to supplement the second quarter loss of receiver Greg Jennings to a dislocated ankle. Jennings did not return and will not return to the field until the Vikings' week 6 game at home against the Carolina Panthers.

Jim Schwartz was fuming in the locker room, directing a speech to the offense, "The defense is not going to be able to hold teams to 10 points with guys like that on offense. 10 points is just downright impossible. Scoring has to happen for our offense. We have to take advantage of weaker secondaries like theirs, and we didn't, and we beat ourselves by not doing that. This loss is strictly on our offense."

CHICAGO, IL -- "It's tough, man. This one's gonna be really hard to swallow. I just gotta get through this and be able to get back on the field as soon as possible."

This was Adrian Peterson speaking at a postgame press conference at Soldier Field, where in the third quarter of the week 2 matchup between the Vikings and Bears, Peterson suffered a broken collarbone that will keep him on the sideline for the foreseeable future. This leaves Minnesota without their two best offensive players in Peterson and wide receiver Greg Jennings, who dislocated his ankle last week. Jennings wasn't missed a whole lot in this game, however, as Matt Cassel and Cordarrelle Patterson had monster days, connecting eight times for 161 yards and two scores.

"We just really stepped up where we needed to, with Greg out and Adrian going down, we needed to step up and we did in a big way. That needs to happen again in the future for us to win, but for now I'm gonna celebrate," said a beaming Matt Cassel on his way to the locker room after the game.

For the Bears, nothing seemed to be going right, as they were beaten handly in almost every aspect of the game, even in special teams, a surprise because the Bears have Devin Hester returning punts and kicks. Hester was limited to just 59 return yards total, compared to Patterson's 96. Even the Vikings running game, without their star halfback for most of the second half, managed to outman that of the Bears.

Minnesota picked a good time to have a bad opponent, as their best two offensive players will miss the Vikings' week 3 game against the 0-2 Browns. The Browns, as their record shows, are one of the weakest teams in football, so this is more of a practice for backup running back Toby Gerhart to get some reps than a game to worry about.

ST. PAUL, MN -- The Vikings stepped out onto Mall of America Field for their home opener against Cleveland in week three with a ton of confidence. In fact, it may have been too much, as Minnesota proceeded to play their sloppiest game of the year, winning 23-7 only because their opponent was even worse in most aspects of the game. All the Vikings showed their fans was that without the NFL MVP in the backfield, they aren't really much of a contender. That doesn't bode well considering that Adrian Peterson will still be out for five more games. Matt Cassel and Cordarrelle Patterson, who connected eight times last week, were surprisingly shut down, something that may have happened because of the reduction in rushing yards.

"I've gotta step up more, we've all gotta step up more especially with guys hurt. Playing the way we did today will not get us more wins," said Cassel.

It wasn't that Toby Gerhart had a bad game, as 79 yards is still a good day for most players in the league, let alone someone who barely got on the field before last week, but the Vikings definitely saw a reduction in the running game.

LONDON, ENGLAND -- The Vikings moved to 4-0 on the season in front of an eager Wembley Stadium crowd on yet another sloppy performance. This one almost cost them a win.

"A football game is sixty minutes long, you have to play hard that entire sixty minutes in order to win on a consistent basis. We didn't, we just made big plays when we had to. We need to make plays throughout the game. Plays were there for us to make and we just didn't make them, lucky to come out with a W," said a tired Leslie Frazier after the game.

Quarterback Matt Cassel was a huge improvement over last week, throwing for over 200 yards and two touchdowns, including a go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter to Jarius Wright, who had one catch in the previous three games. This was set up by a Sharrif Floyd forced fumble that was recovered by Kevin Williams. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured on the play and did not return.

Even after this score though, the game wasn't over. Shaun Suisham hit a 36-yard field goal with less than a minute and a half to play to put the Steelers up by two. Blair Walsh then would show ice water in his veins, hitting a 37-yarder as time expired to give Minnesota the huge come-from-behind win.

Roethlisberger has a torn shoulder, and has been declared out for the next four weeks, and will miss three games, against the Jets, Ravens, and Raiders. Pittsburgh has a bye for week five. The Steelers also lost linebacker Larry Foote for seven weeks to a broken collarbone.

ST PAUL, MN -- "We were beaten just about everywhere. We didn't just play sloppy like we have in the past. We were making bonehead mistakes I absolutely hate making. This will never happen again."

This was an extremely agitated Leslie Frazier in the press room after the Vikings' week-six game against Carolina, in which the offense wasn't getting started, the defense was giving up big play after big play, and DeAngelo Williams set a new NFL record by rushing for 373 yards.

I shouldn't say the defense was terrible. The defense forced three turnovers and was the main reason that Minnesota was still in the game with less than two minutes to play. It was the offense that decided to put butter on the gloves near the end.

On fourth down with a little more than two minutes to play, Matt Cassel threw deep to a wide open Jerome Simpson down the field, for what looked to be a surefire touchdown. The ball went right through Simpson's hands. On another fourth down with about a minute and a half to play, Cassel threw to a wide open Cordarrelle Patterson in the end zone, only to have the ball dropped. It was the second drop of the day for Patterson. The Panthers took two knees and ran out the clock to end the game.

"When we make mistakes like that, we don't deserve to win," said Cassel.

                  Week 7 Game Recap

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- For the second straight week, the Vikings defense failed to make stops. They gave up 41 points in a loss to the lowly New York Giants.

"I'll be the first to say that we had one of the best offensive days we've had this season. Our defense has to step up if we want to keep winning."

This was Leslie Frazier's media comment after the game. He sounded calm, but in the locker room was found irately yelling at defensive players, the defensive secondary in particular.

I don't know what happened tonight, but we just couldn't stay with anyone. We kept letting guys get open for big plays. Coach has every right to yell at us," said cornerback Chris Cook. Cook had three tackles.

The offense, just as Frazier said, was on fire. Matt Cassel threw for almost 300 yards, and Toby Gerhart ran for almost 200. Matt Cassel told ESPN's Ron Jaworski, "38 points will usually win a game. I don't know what happened to our defense, or what kinds of daydreams they were having."

                      Week 8 Game Recap

ST. PAUL, MN -- The Vikings got exactly what they deserved for the way they played on Sunday against Green Bay. A loss, that is.

"We fought back to tie up the game, even had the lead for a while in the fourth but wound up getting lucky the game went to overtime, and then not taking advantage of it," said Matt Cassel. "We have to play well the whole sixty minutes, not just the last ten."

This has been the main downfall of the Vikings the last few games, as they have gotten themselves in holes that have just proven themselves too hard to climb out of against the Panthers, Giants, and now the Packers. Cassel himself had a great game, but the rushing attack did not follow suit, letting the Packers figure out that the Vikings were one-dimensional and letting them key in on the passing game. The Vikings were for the most part shut down in the overtime period because of this.

The game was really hyperfocused on the defensive lines. The Packers managed to get seven sacks, which looks astonishing, but the Vikings had nine, including two from NFL sack leader Brian Robison, and somehow didn't win. It didn't help that Chris Cook went down in the second quarter, which allowed Aaron Rodgers to pick apart a largely inexperienced defensive secondary.

                        Week 9 Game Recap

DALLAS, TX -- "I think we saw an emergence this week. Last year, and even early this year, we were too one-dimensional. But look at what Matt did today, with all those clutch throws and touchdown passes. We started to show that we can be a balanced football team, and I think we'll go far because of that."

That was Leslie Frazier talking about the huge day that his quarterback Matt Cassel had on Sunday against the Cowboys. Cassel had over 400 yards with 4 touchdown passes, including the game winning one-yard throw to a diving Kyle Rudolph in the back of the end zone with ten seconds on the clock.

"It was play action and I found myself under pressure quickly, and just tried to find someone to throw to in the end zone, found Kyle and look what happened," was what Cassel had to say about the play. Not only did he have a big day, Toby Gerhart rushed for over 100 yards, and said it was, "Just what the team needed," in his last game before the highly anticipated return of reigning MVP Adrian Peterson.

"Can't wait to get back out there with the guys and help us win. Thursday night should be fun," Peterson said to a sideline reporter before heading to the locker room.

Damn this is really well put together. Surprising to see some of these cpu teams be so darn pass heavy.

DT Sharrif Floyd and DE's Jared Allen and Brian Robison are all near the top of the Pro Bowl ballot and in the running for best DL so a lot of teams quit trying to run a lot after I make some stops. Except for Carolina.
