MORE BAD NEWS FOR YANKS: JETER NOT EXPECTED BACK UNTIL AFTER BREAK
Yankees captain Derek Jeter out until ‘sometime after All-Star Game’ with new ankle fracture

Derek Jeter's comeback hopes take a huge blow after doctors discover a crack in his injured ankle.

Coming off a sweep at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles the last thing the Yankees needed was more bad news. In a cruel twist the Yankees found out that their captain Derek Jeter would miss more time due to a small crack found in his surgically repaired ankle.

“We have to back off and let that heal,” GM Brian Cashman said. “This is obviously a setback.”

Cashman speculated that Jeter’s return would now not come until “sometime after the All-Star break,” leaving the Yankees without both their shortstop and third baseman Alex Rodriguez for at least the first half of the season. They remain hopeful that Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson will return from the disabled list next month.

Jeter, who resumed on-field activities last week, has been having what Cashman called “issues” with the ankle. That prompted a visit to a doctor who did a CT scan that revealed the new fracture.

“He is obviously the toughest one we’ve ever had,” Cashman said. “You know when Derek Jeter continues to have issues that don't go away, you know that means more than just your typical something, I guess. That’s what led to the follow-up with the doctor.”

Cashman said Jeter hadn’t “done anything wrong” during his rehab, even as he pushed himself with an eye toward Opening Day. Still, the GM admitted that it was “hard to say” whether Jeter’s April 1 goal may have caused his latest setback.

“This is the third CT scan he's had; his prior two CT scans showed the healing, and 100% healing,” Cashman said. “He wasn’t cleared for baseball activities and cleared to play until he had 100% healing. This is a new fracture but a small one; I guess that's the only good part, they kept saying the word small. It’s a setback so it’s not a good situation.”

Jeter will rest his ankle for the next 4-8 weeks to allow the bone to heal, but according to Cashman, the shortstop will not require any further surgery. Anderson told Cashman that 95% of those with this injury make it back. You would have to assume, though, that not many of them were 38-year-old major league shortstops.
