The guy was a junkie and it almost killed him, he beat it. Then, he gets in a freak plane crash and lives through that, enough to scare you shitless by itself. So then he goes and gets hooked on the painkillers and back on the junkie bandwagon again and OD's to his death.

Meanwhile, there are innocent children dying of cancer for no reason aside from bad luck in physiology.
