In the past few years we have seen a huge decline in the quality of Rap and Hip-Hop. More and more it seems that the lyrical quality of the newer artist have declined. Now the mainstream media pays more attention to rappers such as Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, and "Jerks", than artist that bring more than just a good beat to a track, but there are still some out there. This is a list of the top 10 rappers currently, if i was ranking them on their career achievements some of them would be a lot higher.
Common will easily go down as one of the top 25 rappers ever. Lyrically very few rappers can stand up to him. He has been doing it for a while, 17 years to be exact. He has released classic albums this decade such as Finding Forever and Be. His latest album Universal Mind Control could have been a lot better, but its no denying that he is one of the best thats still doing it. He has a new album titled Believer that is scheduled to be released in 2010.
Many people may disagree simply because of that crap shoot that was his last album, but lets not forget about what he did before hand. College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation will go down as three of the best albums of the decade. Most producers that decide to venture into the rap game do not do sop well, Kanye on the other hand is the complete package. His confidence is a notch above anyone else in the game, and it shows in his songs and lyrics. He has delivered some of the best lines that i have ever heard, if it wasn't for his last album Kanye could have been as high as 3.
When The Game first hit the scene with 50 Cent and the hit song "How We Do", I will admit that I did not listen to a single second of the song or anything else by the man. This all changed once I heard "Hate It Or Love It", that same day I went out and bought The Documentary. The Game resurrected the west coast Hip-Hop scene, the only problem is that hes the only one from the West Coast that has this amount of talent(that we know of). Many people will say "He's only a Gangster Rapper", which is not entirely true. The Game is a "Gangster Rapper" but thats not all he is and thats not all he raps about. Songs such as "My Life", "Start From Scratch", "Angel", and "Letter To The King" shows that he is much more than that. His latest CD was not as good as his first two but hes still going strong. His next album is slated for a late 2009 release.
The infamous T.I., a year or two ago he would have easily made number 2 on my list. He has a southern swagger about him that he puts into his songs and it really helps to bring the energy out of them. Every single CD he has dropped this decade have been great. You can tell he puts so much into his music. His hit single "Dead and Gone" will go down as one of my favorite songs of the decade. Just like Gucci Mane and a lot of other rappers he does rap a lot about drugs(not so much now), but he does it in a cleaver way and his lyrics are notches above Gucci and anyone else like him.
As of late Ludacris has surprised me with his lyrics, maybe I was a bit distracted by that huge fro of his. Although he has been one of my favorite rappers for some time now, I never noticed his lyrical ability until Release Therapy. His lyrical skill was really on display on his song featuring Lil Wayne titled "Last Of A Dying Breed". Luda is truly on of the last of a dying breed.
Jay-Z will be placed among the top 5 rappers ever once his career is done(some already consider him the greatest), and will possibly be the number one artist(not only Hip-Hop)of the decade. Nearly every album he has dropped has been a classic, nearly everything he touches turns into something great. What hasn't he done, hes a Hip-Hop mogul, businessman, and hell, he has Beyonce. Jay would easily be in the top three on this list if it wasn't for his lackluster performances as of late. Lately Jay has fell off a bit, while DOA was a great lyrical track, he was showed up on his next single by Kanye West. The Blueprint 3 was a big disappointment in my opinion. Still its no denying that he is one of the best to ever bless the MIC.
The one thing that made it easy to put Nas above Jay-Z was Jay's lat album. Nas has been on top of his game for every single album he has put out this decade. Not one of his albums put out in the last deacade. With the release of Untitled Nas showed us that he still has the lyrics to rap with the best of them. He is one of the best that has ever done it, and hes showing no signs of slowing down.
After not putting out an album in 4 years Eminem returned from his "musical hiatus" with the release of Relapse. Although it was not his best effort, it was enough to wash the nasty taste out of everyones mouth from Encore. Another thing that he showed was that he is still one of if not the best lyricist in Hip-Hop. Not many artist can say that they are better than Eminem in the history of Hip-Hop, and not one can say that they've sold more albums than Marshall. Eminem is deservingly put into the top 3 one this list, and when its all said and done will go down as one of the top 10 ever.
I'm sure this will be the most hotly debated placement on the list. Some might think that Lil Wayne does not even belong on the list itself much less being in the top 3, but he is. Wayne has some of the best lyrics in the game, and possibly ever. In the two years leading up to The Carter III Wayne was the hottest artist out, and he had yet to release his album. From mixtapes to official albums, Wayne kills nearly every track that he puts his words on. He falls from the number one spot because he is venturing into Rock N' Roll, but there is no doubt that he still is one of the best in the game.
Surprise surprise! If it wasn't for Wayne's venture into Rock Lupe might have ended up at the number two spot, but things happen, and Lupe takes the number one spot. Lupe has taken a quite road to the top. His first two albums have received major critical acclaim from nearly everyone. His songs are creative, his lyrics are crafty, and he has a calm swag about him. He claimed that he would retire after his next album, but then changed his mind and has announced that there will be at least three more albums released. Lasers is first up and it is one of the most anticipated albums of the year. Lupe enjoy your time at the top.
10. Common
