Thoughts?

I absolutely love KRS...but this makes no sense. People say there is a lack of lyricism in hip hop. Very few, if any, of the artists usually targeted with this sentiment are Def Jam artists. Of the artists that get the most airplay, very few are from Def Jam. I think Kris is barking up the wrong tree on this one.
so is KRS accusing Def Jam of cock blocking non-label artists on the radio?
Def jam was a pioneer label in hip hop but all they've in recent years is market savvy
if anything Puffy started the commercialization of hip hop...so Fuck him..
the sound of hip hop as it is now is due to new artist's effect and interpretation of hip hop..
hip hop has constantly evolved[ or devolved] through the years...from grandmaster flash...to LL cool J...to NWA...to Tupac....to DMX...to 50 cent...to lil Wayne...
our tastes are defined by what we grew up with, Im not a poser so Im not afraid to say that I hated Rapper's delight when I heard it as a lil Medellin, but I was the kid in 2nd grade that would be singing the hook to Ice Cream off of "only Built 4 cuban Linx"...
Music is constantly changing, Hip hop isnt ruined...its just different.
I somewhat agree and somewhat dont... I mean... I feel like what we have today isnt hip hop...its more towards hip-pop ya know? I feel what KRS says, and there are a lot of real cats making some raw lyrical tracks, but they just dont get the same amount of love as guys who spend their money getting somebody to write them a catchy hook... its sad really.

I know exactly where you're (& KRS) coming from but my point is Def Jam is hardly the cause. Many of the best lyricists of all time are/were either signed to DJ or managed by Rush (Russell's managment co. back in the day). I could much more understand blaming major record labels in it strictly to make a buck and help push the easily accessible, digestable, forgettable that songs that are all over the place for a few months then replaced by the next song with a catchy hook & danceable beat.
