I agree about the storyline, but things just seem to be lining up against him right now (following Dexter, trying to force the reporter on Deb, being dirty). If nothing else, I think he could be a source of tension leading into next season.

I think he built it for himself. In the preview for next week he shows Dexter the casket and tells him how he helped him "see the light" and not kill himself.
