Im not a fan of Star Wars, so your argument is invalid. And James Cameron directed Terminater 1 and 2, True Lies, Aliens, The Abyss, and Titanic, not Star Wars.
Most anticipated movies till 2010

I saw a three minute trailer for Avatar a few days ago on my annual trip to the cinema.
I was bored off my arse for the whole three minutes.
Unrestricted access to CGI has just made film makers overindulgent and lazy. What should be a useful tool has become the raison d'être for huge numbers of movies at the expense of plot, character development, narrative, dialogue, suspense etc.
Most of the great moments in movie history have come about from the director having his vision restrained and having to think more concisely and creatively. Think of 'Jaws', the shark looked shit so they had to come up with a way of frightening people without showing a crap bit of rubber. They replaced it with some yellow barrels and two bass notes. Instant classic.
If that film was made today then the shark would be on screen for about 70% of the time with constant, and increasingly and unnecessarily graphic attack scenes. The result would be a film that is an amazing technological achievement but incredibly boring to watch. (Example: Deep Blue Sea).
Listen to the director's commentary tracks on the classic Sci-Fi and action movies from the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Over almost every legendary scene they will say "What we wanted to do here was [insert ridiculously overblown and prohibitively expensive action sequence] but we didn't have the money/time/technology so instead we come up with this [simple but effective] shot and the rest is history."
Still, the upside of it all is that I'm only spending about £6 a year on cinema tickets leaving me plenty of money to buy good films on DVD.Last edited by relaxedanderson; 11-04-2009, 09:59 AM.Z(u, w) = Z0(w)[1-exp{-b(w)u}]

And can we really judge Cameron's use of CGI on this scale? Ok, he was one of the pioneers with 'The Abyss' but that was just a few shots, Terminator 2 is for later and Titanic is one of those real-world films that are actually enhanced by CGI; actual events that can't reasonably be recreated through tradition means.
From the trailer I saw - which I'm assuming Cameron believes is a good representation of what's in the actual movie - it looks like he's just 'Lucased' the whole thing...throw everything at the wall and hope it sticks.
I won't be watching it though. On Première day I shall settle down with a nice glass of brandy and watch 'Zulu' on DVD.Z(u, w) = Z0(w)[1-exp{-b(w)u}]

The Road is my most anticipated. I've seen some three minute clips of different scenes and they did a great job capturing the darkness of it. I'll see 2012 for the explosions and that Daybreakers movie looks pretty cool too.Comment

Just went and saw one of your honorable mentions yesterday, The Men Who Stare at Goats, and it's one of the most fucked up movies I've ever seen. The only movie I can come close to comparing it to is Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in the way it left me with a blank stare and speechless afterward.
I have no doubt this movie is going to be a love it/hate it kind of affair. I still haven't quite wrapped my head around it, but I'm leaning toward the latter simply because at least with Hitchhiker's, I felt like there was a readily discernible plot that you could follow throughout.Comment
