I agree with your top 10 of 09 with the exception of Sunshine Cleaning. Though a good movie, I did not enjoy it as it was obviously depressing, and it really wasn't top 10 good, in my opinion.

Felt a lot like Sunshine too, and not just because of the name.

Not especially. I don't go out of my way to see a lot of them, especially obscure ones. I see 90% of the mainstream movies that come out during the year, so there's bound to be some horror movies in there.

Positives:
Everything. The acting is spot on, the storytelling is some of the best I've seen. I love the realistic nature of the actors actually speaking the languages they're supposed to, unlike some other WWII movies (cough Valkyrie cough). The addition of such a realistic element in such a false story just shows how important certain details are to Quentin Tarantino.

Back to the acting, Christoph Waltz was born to play Colonel Hans Landa. Actually, it seems as though everyone's character was meant for them. Everyone in this film became their character and the fact that Brad Pitt was the only recognizable face added to the film. Melanie Laurent as Shosanna NEEDS to get some Oscar love, even though Diane Kruger is taking all the credit for this movie in the awards field (who was great in the role as well, but Shosanna's character just blew me away).

The suspense in this movie is what made it for me. If you do not know what I'm talking about, then you missed the first 15 minutes of the film and took a shit during the bar scene. Both of those scenes were some of the best in the film and after close to watching it 10 times, I still get nervous when shit hits the fan in the bar.

This movie has everything you'd expect from a Tarantino movie and more. It's clever, witty, violent, and bold. But there's more. There is an emotion that none of his other movies have shown. An emotion I can't explain. An emotion you need to experience for yourself. It's no question that this is my favorite Tarantino film and it might just be his best.

Negatives:
This movie is nearly flawless. Some people would complain about the length of the film or the over use of subtitles, but not me. My ONLY problem with this movie was the lack of development for the Basterds. This movie is already 2.5 hours long, but I'd watch 2.5 more if it involved the Basterds adventures. I wish we got some more of SPOILER - Hugo Stiglitz before he died. Besides Shosanna, he was my favorite character. Also I wish Hitler truly died like that instead of being a fucking pussy.

Random Roles: QT regulars Samuel L. Jackson and Harvey Keitel can be seen in voice over roles. Jackson as the narrator of both Hugo Stiglitz' back story and when giving information about nitrate film. Harvey Keitel is the Basterd's commanding officer, only heard over the radio at the end.

Definitely agree Palooza, I wish there was more about the Basterds as well, like maybe a gun battle with the Nazi's in the orchard they were looking for or something.

Story:
500 Days in the relationship of Summer (Zooey Deschanel), an eccentric woman who doesn't believe in true love and Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt) the greeting card writer who believes that love does exist and he's found it with her.

Positives:
Joseph Gordon Levitt as Tom - Tom's character is essentially every thing that we've seen from a female character in a romantic comedy, except the fact that Tom's beliefs are in a realistic, yet eccentric world created by Marc Webb, makes this movie much more than a romantic dramedy. The character of Tom is played perfectly by JGL. The many character arcs that Tom goes through are done with ease by Levitt. Hopefully this role will open up much bigger roles for Levitt, as he's been on top of the indie game for some time now. I will not be surprised if he wins an Oscar (or is at least nominated) within the next few years (if he isn't for 500 Days of Summer.

The music - Heelswxman would be proud of the music that plays throughout the movie. Between the over abundance of Smiths music and references plus the Hall and Oats, it's an "indie" music lover's dream.

Zooey Deschanel - oh my is she fun to look at. She's gorgeous even though besides her eyes, there is not one thing special about her. She once again shows off her pipes during a karaoke scene and sings a Smiths line or two, which makes her much more attractive.

the chemistry - This movie would not have worked if it hadn't been for the instant chemistry that was felt on screen from the second Tom and Summer met. Between Summer's beautiful blue eyes and independence and Tom's skinny ties and over-sized headphones, you truly felt these two were meant to be together from that first interaction in the elevator. Through everything that happens to the two of them, you truly feel that Tom deserves Summer and that Summer is deserving of Tom's love. Even from their last scene together, you understand that there should always be something there, regardless of whether or not it is love or just purely a friendship, even though both parties want different things.

the ending - I loved the realistic nature of the last few scenes in the movie. Between Summer and Tom's fall out to the role reversal we see in their last scene together. Add in the meeting of Autumn (Minka Kelly ohhh myyy ) I loved it.

Marc Webb - Everything Marc Webb did with this movie felt original. Although the movie may seem like the love child of movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and High Fidelity, it still felt like a breath of fresh air to me. Thanks to Marc Webb, the music, the reality/expectations scene, the ikea scene, the shifting through the timeline and the storytelling all felt genuine and new.

Narration - The voice of God narration makes this movie feel much more like a story, even with the jumping of the storyline. I'm not sure who the guy was, but from the second I heard his voice, I was sucked in.


Negatives:
It's hard to say what is truly bad about this movie.

Chloe Moretz as Rachel - Dell, like a few other people's reviews I have read, dislike the little sister character played by Chloe Moretz. I didn't really mind her the first 5 or so times I had watched this movie, but the last time I watched it (just finished about a half hour ago), I had thought about it every time she came on screen and I can completely understand where people were coming from. The wise beyond her years shtick gets old pretty quickly and after the soccer scene, I'd consider her annoying. I did think that they used her sparingly, which was smart. If any more of her, I think I would have noticed.

Summer - I loved her up until the scene on the bench. When she broke Tom's heart, I felt as though she broke mine. I shouldn't put this in the negative category, but god damnit, that was bitchy! The role reversal of the two characters is pretty much what saves me from hating Summer completely. She is now getting married, because she felt this man was the one, not Tom and Tom is left believing that if Summer wasn't the one, love does not exist.


Random Roles: You can see Chloe Moretz, Tom's sister, as Hit Girl in Matthew Vaughn's upcoming "superhero" flick, Kick Ass. The trailers of that movie alone blow her performance in this movie away, which was sadly a bit annoying.

I'd also like to admit that I am easily entertained and that's why I've thrown both my own rating and a more realistic rating. I tend to overlook some bad things about a movie because I get so wrapped up, but I do understand what is bad about it.

With 500 Days of Summer, Im still blown away both Dell and you never mention the expectation vs Reality scene(which was my fav scene) or How appropiately they used The Graduate to compare Tom and Summer.
