You can't relate to Avatar, Up, District 9, Star Trek, etc. like you can relate it to The Hurt Locker for pretty obvious reasons.
1) Those movies weren't real. They were completely fictional.
2) I understand the concept of being able to relate societal themes within the movie, but you cannot put yourself in the shoes of an individual characters in the movies mentioned above. You can literally put yourself in the shoes of the guys in The Hurt Locker.
3) There is no real remorse or fear felt for the characters in the movies mentioned for the same reasons as number 2. You cannot identify with the fear that the Navi in Avatar had, or the old man in Up, or Wikis in D9 because again, their stories are completely fictional and outside the realm of possibility.
Sidenote - Did you burst out laughing when Steve Martin introduced Meryl Streep as "the most nominated actor of all time"?
