Every season is like this, it always explodes into a multi-episode orgasm. Just give it a full season and see what you think then.

It's like reading a book, it takes a while to get into it, but you're more emotionally invested. If you can stick it out it makes for a better pay off. I've been watching on DirectTV Channel 101 with my girlfriend who has never seen it, so I assume we're at the same place. I assure you as I've been assuring her, it definitely gets better from here. The highlights are the second half of season 1, all of seasons 3-4, and select parts of seasons 2 and 5.

Overall though, what makes the show great is how well you get to know the characters, and how true to life they feel.

This is the kind of answer i was looking for.

If everyone was like "are you fucking retarded, its awesome from day 1", i'm pretty sure I would pass because right now it's not doing much for me. But the concensus seems to be that it starts slow, which is fine. I didnt really like Sopranos at first, and it's my all time favorite...anything. I've watched it start to finish 4 times.

Give it time. It's not an action series. It's a drama.

This thread is money for me. I watched maybe one episode when The Wire was on live. I DL'ed the complete series over the summer. I just got around to watching it the other day and I enjoyed the first episode, my wife has made me sit through 30 different crime shows over the years and this one seemed better than most.

Its good to know that some think it starts out slow so i wont get discouraged if it isnt doing it for me.

The old cliche "it's a marathon, not a sprint" works with this show.

The first season or two really just kind of introduce you to the characters and set the environment and system up.

It's as if the directors wanted to keep it simple in the beginning so the viewer could just get an understanding of the relationships, characters, conflicts, and system that the cops and Avon implement. Once they establish that, they start to peel back the layers and really begin to dig deeper and deeper and the real storylines begins to unfold.

season 4 is the best buy yea season 1 kinda drags at first because it needs to introduce all the plots and characters, but it only gets better

                    Update:

I finally gave up. Maybe I'm just "that guy", but this show does absolutely nothing for me. I'm bored beyond belief. I really want to like it, but NOTHING EVER HAPPENS. The politics within the police department couldn't possibly be more boring. I'm more disappointed than anything else, with all the hype I thought it would be can't miss.

I don't know what season I'm in. Right now its all the bullshit with the docks.

The only interesting subplot so far has been the kid from Friday Night Lights, who gets killed by the kid from Oz. That had me interested, but now I'm bored again.

My girlfriend hasn't tapped out yet, so I guess I'll keep watching until she gives up. She's close.

3/4 of the way through season 1 it gets good...then season 2 is ok but kind of boring, but it lays the groundwork for the rest of the series so, its important.

Put in the work to watch it and you won't be disappointed.

Eh, I guess you're in season 2 if you're on the docks. That's where I am. I've seen the whole series twice, but my girlfriend is in her first viewing and couldn't be more interested. She loves the show, and we haven't even gotten to the best parts yet. Then again, she's from the area and is probably just trying to appease me because she knows I'm a fanboy.

I can't get mad if you don't like it, especially if you've already seen all of season 1. The part you mentioned, plus what happens to Kima, is where it really starts to get interesting, at least to me.

Season 2 is pretty hit or miss but it ends on a strong/gut wrenching note.

This is the best post in the thread...it accurately depicts what this show is about.

The first 3/4 of season one and season two struggle to keep you interested, but they are very important in the grand scheme because if you jump into "the good seasons" which is 3-4 and part of 5...you'll be lost and not appreciate or be connected with the characters like you should be.

W2B, just put in the time and muscle through the first two seasons and it'll be worth it.
