I'm not too worried about the show having a run of big bads for a couple more seasons to bridge the gap to J. Edgar Hoover.

There's enough real life ancillary chracters who are regulars where the show will be able to avoid the same issues Dexter has had the big bad method.

Some real beautiful shots in tonight's episode with the best ones coming right at the start and end of the episode. A lot actually happened in what is probably the best premiere since the pilot.

I had no idea it even came on last night. Watched it in a daze around 2am. Was that Ron Livingston?

That was a great opening ep, although my concerns still remain. I still love the fuck out of this show, though. And probably always will.

Are you even watching this shit anymore or just openly criticizing it for fun?

The bandwagon has thrown you off

No I thought it was a very underwhelming premiere. I thought a conflict between Nucky and AR was being set up only for them to basically say its all good now. I know they are bringing in another villain of the season this year too. They realize not having Jimmy hurts them and you can see Eli's son is going to be used to fill that void. At this point it doesn't even seem like a lot of the side characters have anything to do with Nucky. It's well acted and looks great, but the plot is seriously convoluted at this point.

Did you type all of that out on your phone while taking a shit? If so, I commend you but still seriously disagree

I still love the show but it is no longer in the elite tier. Neither message was written on a toilet.

I think you guys are all too caught up in how good the characters are and are failing to see short comings story wise.

I do think they've made mistakes with the plot, as I've said on here in the past. But, I don't think Jimmy's death was one of them and they've responded really well to those mistakes. This season is really important, but I'm confident in them delivering.

His death wasn't a mistake. It was just the high point of the show and his and Nucky's dynamic was key in the first two seasons.

I don't know where to stand on it, need to rewatch either way, it was foolish of me to jump right in immediately after Breaking Bad. That scene with Purnsley though, jesus.

As soon as Jimmy died, it went from a show about interpersonal relationships and the pull of good & evil which happened to be based in the prohibition era, to just a show about gangsters in the prohibition era.

I will gladly continue watching a show about gangsters in the prohibition era, but I preferred the interpersonal dynamics Jimmy had with the rest of the characters. Nucky, Gillian, & Richard are all far less interesting without Jimmy. Jimmy gave the show its heart. The show has no heart now.

This is basically what I'm trying to say. I love the prohibition era and it was an excellent backdrop for an excellent story. As you said, now the backdrop is the story which makes it less compelling.
