    Don't think they said specifically in storyline. I think McElhenney felt the character needed something extra this season so he decided to put on the weight.

        McElhenney said he was sick of tv actors getting better looking as their shows go on so he wanted to go the reverse.

        Which is funny because the last two episodes Charlie has started to look a lot more clean cut which needs to end ASAP.
