    Fight Club

Can we please (pretty please with a cherry on top) discuss, for a moment, one of the greatest movies of all time? Please? This movie is just damned terrific and I like it more every time I see it.

I mean, once you've seen it once, every second and third time is like you're getting a deeper look at the narrator - how he thinks, how the movie works. I mean...

The movie is by and large a hallucination. Once you've seen it and you know that Tyler Durden isn't a real person, but rather a part of the narrator's psyche, it puts everything in a different light.

For instance, take into account his conversations and interactions with Marla. His schizophrenic hallucination tells him not to "bring him up" because she's unaware that they're different people - because they're not.

It's as if his psyche is giving him a chance to reclaim part of his sanity and existence when she calls him to check for the cancer lumps - "She called me, not Tyler. I'm neutral in her book." Or when Tyler 'leaves' and he's in control of everything. He's being given a chance by the powers that be or whomever to take back his psyche - but he can't seize the opportunity; he thinks Tyler has left him on his own, when he's being given a chance at control of his own destiny. "You determine your level of involvement."

And it makes you wonder what physically was going on, as we already know what was going on in his mind. Like the first time they have sex; he thinks it's just a dream, and she implies that it was him, but he doesn't get it and 'finds out' it was "Tyler." So the things Tyler was doing were generally things he was doing, but in some cases Tyler was just a schizophrenic audio-optometric hallucination, manifesting itself in a physical form so that he thought something was there, when it wasn't...

But, when he's like fucking the shit out of Marla, that's what he's doing, while his mind is wandering to the bathroom, or maybe he's in the bathroom later, and - while he thinks Tyler is fucking her simultaneously, it's actually something that happened earlier...

The whole movie is a fucking trip, but it's just amazing to me that this all happens by way of him driving himself mad. He gives himself insomnia by subconsciously rejecting the trendiness and accepted false cleverness of society. He created Tyler separately... Giving him jobs and a life, and taking him on trips and such.

Once he finally manifests himself in the narrators life, it's just about too late. I'm never going to be entirely sure how the 'sane' part of his psyche became aware of Tyler, or what would have become of the narrator's conscious after Tyler completely took over or whatever.

I know I'm over-analyzing, but it is a super fucking deep movie. Certainly mind-boggling/bottling (when your thoughts get all trapped in your brain, like in a bottle).

And, for the record, if I had the opportunity and the knowledge, I would definitely make soap like he did.

I've seen it several times. The first time was in middle school. I just understand it better now. And regardless of when it came out, I wanted to discuss it. lol. Like you said, I was five when it came out.

i actually didnt really enjoy this movie when i first saw it. the beginning is a bit slow building and the ending kind of dragged out, but that was more because of the confusion of what was going on. The second time i saw it i loved it because you understand it more and appreciate the way it was written.

It wasnt just an action fighting film. They could have done it that way and market the movie to a certain age group and made millions. Instead they chose to incorporate a great story with the action and mayhem. And of course the action was a hell of alot better then other movies that try to be great action films.

one of my favorite scenes was the first time tyler announced the rules to fight club. that entire scene from the bar closing to the fist being thrown was great

best line....I havnt been fucked like that since grade school
