    The Metal Appreciation Thread

I did a quick glance through here and didn't see any thread dedicated to metal music, so I'm starting one. Hopefully I can get something posted every couple of days, whether its songs I like or any other news. Feel free to post up some songs you like, or whatever you find.

A couple quick disclaimers about metal for me.

1.) Fear Factory is my favorite band. I prefer the old lineup pre Archetype, but the new album was a refreshing step in the right direction. What the original lineup did for current metal though, is amazing.

2.) I like a lot of rap/metal groups, specifically Rage Against The Machine and Hed PE, though each have songs that aren't necessarily metal.

3.) Surprisingly, I like most female singers in metal. It's an aspect that, if done correctly, works for the genre.

4.) I am not into a lot of the death metal/black metal scene, but I do appreciate some bands from those genres, like Dimmu Borgir.

5.) Three albums I think that all metal fans should own are:

    - Demanufacture by Fear Factory
    - Blackwater Park by Opeth
    - obZen by Meshuggah

6.) Yes, I know who Austrian Death Machine is. It was a brilliant idea by Tim Lambesis, and I love it, despite my borderline dislike of As I Lay Dying.

Anyway, the first video I am going to post is the first song released off of In Flames' new album Sounds of a Playground Fading, called Deliver Us. After what I thought was a disappointment with A Sense Of Purpose, I think In Flames has a good start to their new album. I also can't really tell that JesperStrömblad did not record with them. The album is scheduled to be released June 17th.

BTW the only people that I know of that listen to metal are:

Dr. Pepper, NFLman, relaxedanderson and myself.

The rest of the hippies on this board listen to a lot of bullshit.

Haha, I've noticed that. There's a lot of music, and there is nothing personal against them, but in the words of Tony Todd in The Rock, "I dont listen to soft ass shit." I've kept a thread like this at a few other places, so I wanted to start it here.

        Also, fixed the link.

Sure, why not? They are a pretty solid band in my mind. As long as its not System of a Down.

Only bands I've listened to recently that could count as metal are Mastodon, Torche, and The Body.

I listen to older metal bands. The newer ones I listen to metal fans don't like or argue they aren't metal (which I hate arguments about genre).

Which newer ones do you like? I take it from your groan that one of them could be SOAD. If so, its not that I don't consider them metal. Their singer is just so annoying to me.

yea SOAD is one of them lol The ones that get the most gripe from people are Slipknot and Underoath. I also listen to some appreciated bands like Mastodon, Nevermore, then usually I like a song here and there by different bands.

Because Underoath is weenie metal. I liked them when I was into shitty music.

I'm pretty apathetic towards Slipknot, but I am a pretty big Underoath fan. I listen to some bands like that too, like Killswitch Engage and The Devil Wears Prada.

We all like what we like, and at least for me, even if there is one thing I dislike about a band (like SOAD) I can still admit they are still a metal band. There are some "elitists" out there who don't like change and still think anything should sound pre 90s.

Yea I've gotten really big into Underoath over time. I liked the mixture of spencer/aarons vocals I wasn't sure how I'd like the band without Aaron, but I really enjoyed their latest album. Their music to me has seemed to get a bit darker over the past two albums

I listen to older bands like RATM (heard they may be doing a new album?), Metallica, and I've heard the first 3 Sabbath albums and absolutely loved those. Also I listened to Machine Head's The Blackening album and enjoyed it quite much, the only other thing I've heard from them though is Davidian, which I loved.

I love Rage, and yes, rumor is that they might be doing an album. ZDLR stated back in October last year an album could happen, and Tom Morello was very coy this year when asked about it, stating they only had one show in July in the slate for Rage.

Now that you mention the Blackening, that is also up there on my list of albums metal fans should own. That's the only exposure I've had to Machine Head to be honest, and I need to listen to some of their other stuff. Of course, I like Metallica- my favorite album is And Justice For All.
