Much like the way you are overrating his fame, you are also overrating this "accomplishment" of his short film/video airing on four networks at once. It's really not that big of a deal.

I mean, did MTV have to preempt an episode of "Teen Mom" to squeeze it into the timeslot?

And I dont think anyone is arguing that he isnt a big deal to the MTV or BET crowd. I agree with that.

Right, you cant ignore Spears because she transcends her music at this point, she's a mega star.

Kanye is a musician (I guess, but thats a different argument entirely) who doesnt transcend shit. To compare his fame to Spears is laughable.

Spears has also been around for like 15 years. Hit Me Baby One More Time came out in 96 or 97.

Don't sleep on Usher. Dude has an MJ-esque aura about him. Might transcend the generations

Disagree. Chief Boot-knocka was a great album, it was just marketed poorly.

Good argument, but I feel like some of the older posters are forgetting that the high school/college crowd here that have been arguing for Kanye West are going to be the ones remembering and passing down this generation of music 40 years from now, not you guys.

I think I may be misinterpreting "remembered". I'm looking at this in terms of these people becoming icons. Maybe that's too high of a standard.

I asked my Abuela (Cuban Grandmother) "Who is Brittney Spears?" She had no idea.

                  HOWEVER

She does know who Randy Savage is and knew his finishing move.

                  Savage > Spears.

                    Exactly.

Also since our music isn't as good as the music of the 60's and 70's I think they're thinking we won't remember it.

We might not have any Pink Floyds or Led Zeppelins to grow up with, but we do have what we have. Kanye West is considered by many to be the best hip hop artist of this generation. Just because some older crowds might not respect hip hop doesn't mean the younger generations is gonna forget about it with time.

The funny thing is that Kanye West is one of the artist moving hip hop away from the "here today, gone tomorrow" shit and more into something that will last.
Warner my point with that Kanye video I posted, is that it's not about gold chains, cars, or gangs. It's about a guy going through the pain of losing his grandma in a hospital. What makes you think people won't be able to connect with that 40 years from now?

I'm bowing out. I'm probably taking the idea of the thread too far, and confusing 'remembered' with something bigger.

It appears we were arguing two different things.

...and most of the people currently 13-24 will be in their 50s and 60s and thus the least cool demographic on the planet. Will the kids of then want to listen to music that's associated with paunchy, balding men well into their mid-life crisis?

We're all discussing this this from a position of pure speculation; Kanye could reach the Bob Marley icon level or he could end up like MC Hammer, we don't know.

Music has a funny habit of surprising us all. Can you imagine going back to 1988 and telling everyone that in 15 years time the Beastie Boys would be highly respected, multi-platinum selling artists while Richard Marx would be virtually forgotten?
                            Z(u, w) = Z0(w)[1-exp{-b(w)u}]

...and she said "Well I don't think you're a fishmonger. I think you've done a plop in the wrong lavatory."
