Was totally not expecting to see a Patrice Rushen list when I opened this thread. Nice. I'll have to think on this a bit. Not sure who I would say my top 5 artists are.

Yeah knowing jeffs taste I knew top 3, and wasn't shocked by #4.

First I need to decide top 5, and that's the easy part.

I had to decide between Patrice Rushen and Curtis Mayfield. I went with my girl Patrice, a talented and underrated musician who doesn't get the credit she deserves.

As for W2B's question, it would be Prince's '1999'. Purple Rain may be his best selling LP, but 1999(the song and album) is his best work. At the time, Prince wasn't an established star - making a double-LP was risky, but it paid off.

I love 1999 the album, however to me where I find dirty mind to have its only flaw in being too short, 1999 is a little too long. I feel purple rain is perfect in length.

Even though there are some great songs at the end, if 1999 ended with Free it would be perfect.

Purple Rain starts perfectly with let's go crazy and ends perfectly with the title track.
