I guess the issue is to define conventional Wisdom. I am not sure it really applies when talking about movies. Is it critical opinion, is it opinion of the general movie goer. Or is is just a flat fucking opinion.
How is VSN(D) considered to be a reputable source to determine if a movie is good or not.
outside of a few posters most people haven't seen nearly the amount of movies I have, let alone enough to be deemed a critic, which even I couldn't claimComment

nflman,
Requiem for a Dream is largely considered to be a "fantastic" film by most first-year film students. Most first-year film students are idiots. Luckily, most first-year film students realize this mistake by the time they're third-year (if not second-year) film students.
You find the same movie to be fantastic, only you are farther down the timeline than most first-year film students. You would be a twenty-fifth year film student by now. Your opinion, therefore, is considerably more terrible.
Math solves everything.Comment

-pretentious tone
-lack of a narrative arc
-lack of dramatic tension
-unlikable characters
-not very entertaining
-overly simplistic "message" which is ham-handed and forced
-relies on shock tactics rather than nuance
Only redeemable moment of that movie is this line:
"ASS TO ASS!"Comment

Essentially, Aronofsky made a 101-minute anti-drug PSA. The DP should be lauded for making the film cool-looking, but without the pretty shots it's useless.
And, I don't know what movies 2nd and 3rd-year film students think you should be watching. I just know this one sucks.Comment

Lack of a Narrative arc - disagree
Lack of dramatic tension - disagree
Unlikable characters - so all movies have to have a hero or likable character? that's new
not very entertaining - that's completely subjective
overly simplistic "message" - then obviously you only took main theme at its word and didn't bother to look for anything else.Comment

A lot of you guys say I have bad taste in movies. I disagree with this (obviously), but I will explain why.
I would say that a person with bad taste in movies would be somebody who likes a lot of shitty movies.
Here's the thing, I don't like shitty movies. In fact, I don't like many movies at all, period.
I don't have bad taste, I have incredibly picky taste. I am a curmudgeon when it comes to movies, I dislike probably 80% of the movies I see. When you break it down that way, I actually have better taste than the rest of you schmucks, because you fools like any and all sorts of shit.Comment

A story about a guy with "anterograde amnesia" trying to solve a murder mystery. And a film with two different timelines heading in two separate yet same destinations. Yeah this is a recipe for disaster that very few could pull off, fortunately Nolan is one of them.
I'm not gonna get into details or certain scenes because I'll confuse myself. My favorite thing about the movie though, is the cat and mouse like game that the audience plays with the main character. In half of the story he's fumbling around clueless as we at least think we know whats going on. And in the other, he's the one holding all the answers to questions we didn't even know we had. To make it even better, these two halves are constantly intercepting each other for control of the movie.
I'll say it again, Memento is like this era's version of "Vertigo" except somehow taken to another level. Shame how many people haven't seen it.
Nolan ranking:
1. Memento
2. FollowingComment
