1st Annual Buckman Awards

Welcome welcome do not be alarmed, if you're reading this then you're one of the few fortunate enough to witness the very first Buckman awards special. Where the best and worst in the year of film(2011), will be honored.


I guess I'll start with a little background. In 1968 for the first time ever, the movie industry made its way to Houston with a film titled "Hellfighters". Starring John Wayne, Katherine Ross(The Graduate/Butch Cassidy), and Vera Miles(Psycho/The Searchers). In honor of this groundbreaking achievement for Houston, the city has decided to name the award show after the main characters family name, "Buckman".

On to our first award.

Foreign Film of the Year

Mandatory that this is first because lets face it, nobody pays attention to foreign films anyway. Some director that you've never seen before accepts the award along with some actors that you've also never seen before. Just hurry up and sit down so we can put the camera back on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, amirite?


And the award goes to.......

 

"Attack the Block"

What's this? A foreign film that's in English........and has...black people?

Well there's not much else you can ask for from a film. Attack the Block has action, suspense, aliens, and naive white women. Some of the most fun you'll have while watching a 2011 movie.

I'm going to watch that movie right now. My expectation level is about the same as a team might have for a QB drafted in the second round.

"13 Assassins"

There are some who will try and write this off as a simple "Seven Samurai remake", but this movie can easily stand on it's own. I say this because it succeeds in contrasting some of Seven Samurai's main points. For instance in the original the antagonist are faceless/nameless bandits, but in this movie there is a pretty evil villain that's easy to hate. In the original the samurai are on the defensive of an attack, in this one they plan a trap/attack on the enemy. For that and other smaller stuff, it's hard for me to view this is as a remake.
As I've said before I'll take it over Hero, Flying Daggers, Crouching Tigers, and any of those other imports we've had this past decade. It was my top film of the year for quite a while.

I'm going to watch that movie right now. My expectation level is about the same as a team might have for a QB drafted in the second round.

Oh man, pressure. A bad review from Brotroit crew and this entire shingdig could lose what little credibility it has.

It was good and fun to watch. If Kick-Ass and District 9 had a baby, it would be that movie. 7.5/10

Apparently the actor who plays Moses, the main character, is going to be play the lead in a new HBO series called Da Brick from Spike Lee, Doug Ellin, and Mike Tyson. Its about an 18 year old boxer and will be influenced by Tyson's early career.

Attack the Block was so sweet. Its a shame it didn't make more money.

Animated Film of the Year

 

Rango

Was there every any competition? Features adults only jokes along with numerous pop-culture references a la Tarantino. Rango can also get dark at times and has more then a few real strong scenes. All on top of the fact that it never gets boring because the characters light up the movie from beginning to end.

If you haven't seen it yet, then get off of VSN and do just that. From the trailer I thought it was silly and avoided it for a long time, don't make the same mistake I did.

Rango was the third movie I saw in the theater in the sameday. The first two were Sucker Punch and Battle Los Angelos. Thank god, otherwise might have killed myself. It had the best range of character designs I've seen from a cartoon.

Anyway once he became Rango, every time he talked I kept hearing Brad Pitt's character from Inglorious Basterds. Probably just me though.

Back in March and April when they have 3-4 releases a week, if I am up to it, I see back-to-back films all the time and sometimes three.

Now on to a category that was one of the best this year....

Sports Film of the Year

 

"Warrior"

Needless to say this is "The Fighter" of 2011. Except the family is more dysfunctional, the rollercoaster ride has more ups and downs, and this movie never lets you feel comfortable with the outcome you desire. At the end of the day though there really are no losers in this category. When Moneyball isn't the clear cut best sports film, you know it's been a good year.

I'm not posting a trailer for this because it reveals too much. It's best to go into this as blind as possible.
