Unless I'm reading the numbers wrong, the ECF last night quadrupled the Stanley Cup Finals last night. ESPN is gonna talk about what people are watching. Sure, the TV contracts do have some impact on how much time will be spent, but it ultimately comes down to what people are watching.

Hope you dont have your hopes up regarding another title. Its painfully obvious who they are looking to "make" into a champion. The home team getting the whistles is nothing new but that game last night was fuckin awful. I thought the Thunder were getting jobbed but the reffing in the first 2 games in the ECF has been atrocious.

Entertainment Tonight will give you Tom Cruise on the red carpet, they will give you gossip, they will give you what the new releases are this week. ET doesn't talk about the director, won't give any time to the co-star, and is not going to dig deep and analyze Hollywood's inner workings.

SportsCenter is ET. They'll give you Lebron, they'll give you Tiger, they'll give you Tebow. They'll have "experts" give shallow analysis of surface level stories. They'll give you scores, but only the scores of the "big games". You aren't getting a Mariners/Blue Jays highlight, just like ET isn't giving you the director of a movie breaking down why they cut a scene. They'll show you Master's clips, but mostly Tiger (no matter how far back he is) and maybe a shot or two of the leader sinking an easy put, just to shoehorn him in.

It's drive by, populist sports coverage. It has zero depth. It isn't for us. It's for the guy who couldn't tell you a player on the Heat not named Lebron or Wade, or name a golfer aside from Tiger. It's for the guy who watches 2 hours of sports per week on the weekend. And they do a great job catering to that guy.

W2B nailed it. Pretty much exactly what I was going to say but without the strong ET correlation. ESPN knows exactly what they are doing, it's all in the marketing.

True, but they also have contracts for MLS and EPL soccer games, yet they rarely devote any coverage to these sports. And if they do, its in typical ESPN manner..."Thierry Henry was on the bench for this game...here he is watching the game from the bench...he's gotten cold so he puts on a jacket...take a look at Manchester United...Rooney scores a goal as ManU loses 4-1 to QPR..."

ESPN's soccer coverage is basically "Hey, check out which low level La Liga clubs Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo made a fool of this week!" in their top 10 plays segment.
