As a further thought (channeling my inner W2B): I guess I just don't get these comic movies or re-origin stories that just want to keep telling the same fucking thing over and over again. Wow, so Peter Parker is a dipshit and he indirectly gets his uncle killed. Bruce Wayne is a sociopath that uses his parents as a reason to be a sociopath. Clark Kent is a manbitch that could be God but he's too busy trying to be Jesus. This can go on and on, but the point is, I love comic books too, but I'm sorry, I would rather see something a little unconventional if given the opportunity rather than "here is the somewhat clever spin on the Batman mythos that we came up with (spoiler, his parents still die and he broods a lot)."
Granted, going gay is anything unconventional at this point, but it is at least when it comes to this fictional character that already dresses up in a skin tight outfit that actual people would only wear in a fetish club.
While I don't disagree, that the origin stories are played out...lets keep it real.
Just like Shaft isn't white, James Bond isn't a broad, and Sherlock Holmes isn't Irish.
Stuff like this isn't forward thinking or refreshing, it's just trying too hard.
I'm sure Spiderman isn't alot of things he's portrayed to be on screen and vise versa.
I think the idea is dumb and have no intentions on ever watching another Spiderman movie in my life. But it's Spiderman, let's not act like we're talking about something sacred and confined. A gay Spiderman isn't exactly on the same level as say...a black Bilbo Baggins.

We've got a clear cut generation divide if you view Bilbo f'n Baggins as more iconic than Spiderman.

While I don't entirely disagree with the sentiment, I think Bilbo Baggins is pretty popular among the older generation (I was introduced to the Hobbit by my brother who is 10 years older than I).
Either way, the fact remains, I wouldn't call Spider-Man's origin iconic, I would call his character iconic. How he gets to that point is really often bordering on stupid or nonsensical. So if they changed it completely, that's why I wouldn't care. If they do change it though, I definitely agree that it's a sign of caving to something topical. That being said though, that's what 90% of comic books and their movies are about so, whatever.
How "clear cut" is the generation divide when Biblo Baggins came along 20 years before Spiderman?
....
He could have been created in the 1800's and he still wouldn't have been as iconic to most people today prior to the first part of the Hobbit movie (hence the arguable generation gap).
EDIT -- in fairness, I guess some people could have delved into the Bilbo backstory after the initial trilogy...but the story remains the same: Spider-Man is way more iconic and than Bilbo in the past 30 or so years at least, I'd say.
I can see Garfield being like..."this story is so stale. how can we revive it? I got it! Lets make spiderman gay!!! Oh that's not enough anymore...? lets make it gay for a black man!! that'll make the story so fresh!"

Exactly, a full 30 years Spiderman has been more popular and iconic that Bilbo Baggins. Warner is what...12 or 13 years older than me? How is there a generational divide between us? It's Warner, not Bucky...

I can't speak for W2B, but my guess is that he's referring to the fact that Spider-Man was constantly popular during our upbringing and Bilbo is only really popular now (if popular would even be the word for it).
Regardless, the overall point is more relevant: Spider-Man is and will forever be more iconic than Bilbo Baggins.

Tolkein never specified that all of the Hobbits were white.
