[Spoilers] ASOIAF Book Readers GoT Show Discussion Thread

If you've read George R.R. Martin's books and would like to discuss how they are being adapted into the HBO series Game of Thrones, keep discussion in here.

    Beware of spoilers.

Season 4 Episode 1 aired last night and there were some changes that people aren't seeming to be TOO happy about.

    Some included -

    Thenns being cannibals/ruthless/etc

    Dontos/Sansa

The episode titles will give you an idea of how they are adapting the second half of A Storm of Swords and possibly bits of A Feast for Crows/A Dance with Dragons

    1. Two Swords (April 6th)
    2. The Lion and the Rose (April 13th
    3. Breaker of Chains (April 20th)
    4. Oathkeeper (April 27th)
    5. First of his Name (May 4th)
    6. The Laws of Gods and Men (May 11th)
    7. Mockingbird (May 18th)
    8. The Mountain and the Viper (June 1st)
    9. The Watchers on the Wall (June 8th)
    10. The Children (June 15th)

I'm still upset at the lack of Coldhands and The Black Gate. Hopefully they still add Coldhands. For me The Black Gate was huge in helping show that The Wall is more than it seems and establishes another magical element.

Well, we didn't see any of Bran yet so Coldhands is still a possibility for his more important role in the books. Was disappointed we didn't see him help Sam, but I can overlook it as long as we get some Coldhands either way. He's too much of a favorite and a unique character to just leave on the cutting room floor.

I didn't mind them making the Thenns so ruthless and cannibalistic. Tormund, Mance and Ygritte are already extremely likable so we need someone to root against during the Battle of Castle Black, which looks to be Season 4's Blackwater by the looks of the episode breakdowns.

Plus they seem pretty fucking terrifying from the get-go.

edit - Also seeing complaints about how this portrayal will fit with the Uniting of the North storyline later down the road with the Alys Karstark marriage. Wouldn't be surprising to see this either cut or adjusted with Tormund or someone taking over the role.

          Dontos

So what do we do with Dontos? Is he used in the same way as the books just on a small scale? Have Littlefinger use him to get Sansa out of Kings Landing and then kill him?

orrrrrrr, do we turn him into Marillion? Having him blamed for Lysa's death? On the show the last we saw of Marillion, he wrote a song about Joff and got his tongue cut out in Season 1. In the books, he stays in the Eyrie and becomes a pain in the ass for LF (as a favorite of Lysa's), and is blamed for Lysa's death, haunting the Vale with his singing from his cell.

            Shae

One of my biggest fears is that the show will do away with the Shae-in-Tywin's-bed scenario and have her be sent off, to which Tywin's "where ever whores go" is in reference to Shae and not Tysha, turning Shae into Tysha as Tyrion ventures off to escape/find her.

Howevaaaaa, they seem to be going along the lines of the book. Where as her deception is out of left field (because we only see Tyrion's POV with her), the show is adding a dynamic where there is an obvious divide. Her death is necessary and Tyrion spends a good amount of time asking "Where do whores go?" looking for Tysha, his true love, not Shae. Here is where we run into Ser Jorah.

Shae replacing Tysha would be so lame. If Tyrion kills Tywin for banging Shae that will really hurt the show. It needs to be for Tysha which the show can set up once Shae betrays Tyrion.

Dontos as Marillion works for me I guess.

In an interview the Dink said his character stays very true to the books this season. I think this theory is based solely in the fact that some books readers do not trust the showrunners with merging of characters. They are looking ahead at what characters CAN be merged, then speculating that merge then critiquing it before it even has happened. These guys have a lot of time on their hands between books.

When do you guys think the "Only Cat" scene from the Vale will happen? I'm hoping they tack it somewhere into the end of this season, but it's one of the only remaining pivotal plot points post book 3. Might need to save it for next TV season.

We'll probably no more in a few weeks when we see how fast the Sansa escape plot is developing.

This season will end with bran meeting the children of the forest, and next season will end with Dany hearing the khalasar or w/e when she is trying to find her dragons or w/e the fuck she was doing out there at the end of the book.

Odd number seasons end with Dany, even number seasons end north of the wall/at the wall.

I hope the children are creepy as hell. I'm of the belief they are in league with the Others and are trying to reclaim their land.

this reddit theory about benjen being daario is nuts. so benjen hears about dany marrying drogo, leaves the nights watch, becomes a sell sword, dicks around for a few years, finally meets up with her as daario, tries to gain her trust and eventually plows, tries to get her to do the essos version of the red wedding and then becomes a captive of the yunkai. all so he can tell dany jon is the son of rhaegar and lyanna, thus making jon a relation (her nephew i guess).

selmy trying his damnedest to get daario back after his capure also leans towards this theory, but god damn, this shit is nuts lol...

I can't imagine the Sansa escape will stretch beyond episode 3. Depending on how fast the Purple Wedding pops off, she could escape as early as the next episode (I doubt that though, I suspect Joffrey biting it will be the end of the episode). I could definitely see the moondoor scene happening this season, just because I feel like if they hold it off it'll be a REALLY long time. Should be interesting though.

They have to introduce Lady Stoneheart this season, right?

Episode 4 is titled Oathkeeper, so in my estimation, Sansa bails sometime during Episode 3 or 4 and Jaime sends Brienne after her at some point in Episode 4. Seems like a long stretch for her to be in the Vale before "Only Cat" happens if we hold off until next season.
