Official: Stephen Colbert to Take Over Late Night From Letterman

CBS signed Colbert to a 5-year-deal to become the new host of Late Night after Letterman retires next year. Colbert's entire current staff on Comedy Central will move with him to the new gig and he'll drop the conservative gimmick.

Good for him. Colbert Show is awesome, but it will always be #2 to Daily Show. This is a huge step up and I think he will kill it

The Colbert Report is significantly better than The Daily Show.

It's good news for colbert bad news for fans of the colbert show

Love his satire and Im sure he will have to tone it down for the general audience of the tonight show, but hopefully not too much.
          RIP

I like the Colbert Report, not sure how much I will like him without the political schtick. That job should have gone to Craig Ferguson. He puts on a great show, has been loyal to CBS and deserved the promotion to an earlier time slot.

I find Ferguson really annoying. Colbert is epitome of awesome.

No chance he would be allowed to do what he does on the Late Late Show an hour earlier. Besides, I'm pretty sure he's already expressed he didn't want the job. edit - I guess it's hard to differentiate whether he was just playing by the rules and accepting defeat by saying he didn't want the gig or if he legit didn't want it. I honestly don't think he'd be at his best in the 1130 timeslot, he does the I'm-going-to-do-whatever-I-want-because-no-one-is-watching thing perfectly already, no need to spice it up and give him rules.

Either way, shitty timing for Comedy Central. They just had the perfect replacement host get snagged up by HBO. I wish Colbert the best, but I will certainly miss "Colbert"

"What does this mean for Craig Ferguson?

In the immediate future: money. Ferguson’s contract with CBS grants him an automatic payday if he’s passed over for Letterman’s job—a windfall that the New York Post estimates at $5 million, while the New York Daily News says he could make as much as $12 million. As to whether Ferguson will stick around after his contract expires in June, well, that remains to be seen. Though losing the Late Show, combined with those recent talks about Chelsea Handler taking his place, certainly suggest those talks might be a little tense, to say the least."

I don't watch any of those late shows but I'm subscribed to some of them on youtube which means I watch bits and pieces of them every now and then. Ferguson is definitely the best at interviewing da ladies.

This is a huge mistake. Letterman is great but never won ratings anyway so it's not really gonna change
