Why are you telling a lifelong Braves fan and 22 year resident of Atlanta about Chipper Jones? He didn't make the team because EDIT-Ed Sprague not Ron Coomer- had to make it as the Pirates rep, and he was the NL's final third baseman.Last edited by NAHSTE; 07-27-2009, 08:54 AM.Comment

I'm pretty sure that was the Reds, who finished 2nd in both "half's" of the split strike season in 1980, and ended up with the best overall record in the NL.Comment

Yes, it was the Reds (in 1981). St. Louis finished with the 2nd best record in the NL, and they also didn't make the postseason. Only in baseball...Comment

It was all downhill for the Reds from there. That was the last hurrah for TBRM, before they traded everyone, and the guys they kept (Concepcion, for example) all of a sudden got old.
They tried to replace guys like Perez and Morgan with the Dan Driessen's and Ron Oester's of the world, and aside from Mario Soto, they never developed pitching.
The Reds were flat out terrible for about 5 years until guys like Eric Davis, Tom Browning, Barry Larkin, Kal Daniels, and Jose Rijo came up in the late 80's.
And thus ends the 80's Reds history lesson that i'm sure you were all dying to receive.Comment

If Charleton/Dibble/Myers were the Nasty Boys, Price/Power/Hume were the Generally Nice Guys.Comment
