Volquez Has Major Surgery

CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Reds right-hander Edinson Volquez underwent elbow ligament-replacement surgery Monday and is expected to miss approximately 12 months, the team said.

The 90-minute procedure, known as Tommy John surgery, was performed by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek. Volquez also had a torn flexor mass in the elbow repaired.

On the disabled list since June 2, Volquez, who made just nine starts this season, could throw only 20 pitches of a simulated game scheduled for 80 on Friday before complaining of tightness in a muscle.

Volquez is 4-2 in his second season with the Reds after being acquired from Texas for outfielder Josh Hamilton before the 2008 season. Volquez was Cincinnati's only All-Star last year, which he finished with a 17-6 record.

That is the typical recovery time for Tommy John. The Braves are just getting Hudson back sometime in the next two to four weeks and he shut it down last July.

The Reds were already out of next year's race with or without Volquez though.

They have plenty of room for him. Kawakami's gopher ball servitude is better served in the bullpen. He can only go like 3-4 innings a start so he is heading straight to the pen if Huddy can get back to full strength.

yeah what makes me mad is exactly what JTW has said, they should have done it sooner, I think all reds fans new a season endng surgery was coming. if status quo continues after Tommy John surgery how good will Volquez be after TJ surgery, wow.

as a reds fan, i will tell you this much, Dusty had nothing to do wth EV getting hurt, if it was a situation where he was letting him pitch 100+ pitches a game then I could see it, but EV is known for throwing lots of pitches an not getting deep into games, he rarely if ever went over 100 pitches, i don't think DB had anything to do with this, now the stuff in Chicago no idea, but I have seen just about every reds game since DB has been manager and he will only let Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang go much over 100 pitches often

the only thing that can be said is the 18 inning game in San Diego last year both Harang and Volquez pitched, Harang hasn't been the same since and EV could have some issues because of it, but both volunteered to pitch that game so again not DB's fault

oh and I am not a Baker fan at all, i just don't think he needs to take blame for this

True JTW, it's catching up to Cueto too. He's been dreadful since just before the break. He was cruising along, mowing batters down left and right then his production absolutely dropped off the table. Very likely he it a wall after all the innings.

Kawakami, a former Cy Young in Japan, didnt come to the stats to pitch long relief. I highly doubt hes being taken out of the rotation.

He's our 6th best starter, out of 6, so yeah, he goes to the pen.

Its not always that simple.

They have already said they are moving him to the bullpen if/when Hudson is ready to pitch. Not sure why you are failing to see this, but it is that simple.

We have 6 starters, if they are all healthy and ready to pitch, Kawakami is the worst of the 6. He also has complained of shoulder pain this season and sees his effectiveness drop off after the 5th inning. Whether you knew of this shoulder issue or not, it has already been factored into the decision making.


There is no better candidate to go to the 'pen. If they hadn't already said he was heading to the pen, and the rest of the evidence didn't point that way, I'd agree it isn't that simple.....But this time it really is that simple.

He did pitch a gem last night though and I doubt Hudson is gonna be ready to start every 5th day. Just saying that should he be able to pitch his full work load, KK is easily the odd-man out, and is already well aware of this.
