Mets Offer Jason Bay and Bengie Molina Deals

The Mets offered OF Jason Bay a 4-year (guaranteed) deal worth about $65 million which is $5 million more than what Boston offered to bring him back. The deal here is Bay wants a 5-year deal and Boston is not going to give him that. So, if the Mets offer him that extra year, it's assumed they can sign him.

The Mets may only be willing to offer it as an option so that's where it stands now.

The Mets reportedly offered Molina a one-year deal with an option for a second year. Molina would sign ASAP if they up it to two guaranteed years. The market for Molina is not big so stay tuned.

I support it. They need a big bat to add in the outfield. Not sure about his defense but he brings the bat they can put in the middle of the line-up behind Beltran.

About $12 mil a year won't break the bank and by the end of the potential deal, he'd be around 36-years old. They won't find a bigger bat who is younger, so I hope they get him.

Plus, I'm not a big Matt Holliday fan.

I'd say he has above average defense. He's nothing special but he won't lose you games out there and you shouldn't have any real concerns with him. Then again I watched Manny play LF for so many years and then Bay came in so my viewpoint/analysis could be skewed ;)

Bay and Molina would be good pickups. If the Mets stay healthy they'll be tough in 2010.

wasn't Bay in the Mets minor league system ages ago?

why does this feel Like that one time when the Mets aquired Jeromy Burnitz?

I wouldn't worry about defense at all.

Mind you recently we trotted out in LF...Dan Murphy, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Tatis at times the past two years basically. Not everyone can be a stud...Bay is BETTER than those 3 I mentioned...plus he's gonna give you 30-110...that's good to me.

If they decide to offer Bay the 5th year then they will definitely get him. I really don't think there is much of a chance of him coming back to Boston. The only Flaws he has in his game is that he isn't a good fielder and he strikes out too much But I am pretty sure the Mets are getting him for his Power and not his Glove.

And he can't hit a breaking ball.

Bay's super-streaky as well. There's times where you'll love him, and then times where you wish he would just go away.

But he's definitely a dynamite fastball hitter.

I agree...which is why I just don't see the Red Sox spending 16-18M per year on a player that was non existent for two months in the season.

I really hope Molina finds another deal because I have better faith with what the Mets have now. Yes, I like Blanco, Coste and Thole as a trio than adding Molina. I'd look at Dioner Navarro as well.

Also there's talk the Mets have made an offer to Lackey

It's either the Mets or an unknown team. Perhaps Seattle?

Now it appears the Mets have lost interest in Molina because he wants a 3-year contract.

At least, I hope they lost interest.

Mariners would take Bay if he'll take a hometown discount. We aren't going to give him as much as the Mets.

The thing that makes Bay so appealing is how far he hits HRs. Safeco is a lot like the Mets new ballpark where its hard to hit a ball out to left field. IIRC, Bay was one of the top in HR average distance last year.
