Yanks acquire Javier Vazquez from Atlanta

What the hell does that even mean? The "dorky" stats try to make sense of Javy's constant up and down seasons.

Plus, if you're going by end of the year line, then Javier Vazquez is vastly overrated and overpaid. He doesn't do very well in W-L. Most of his value comes in his high K/BB and sometimes shocking high LOB% in years when he's really doing well.

The basic point on Javy is you really don't know what you're going to get. He's so up and down and sadly over the course of the past 5-6 years usually when his team is good, he sucks.

2006 w/White Sox: team wins 90, Javy struggles throughout the year.
2007 w/White Sox: team loses 90, Javy has arguably one of his best year.
2008 w/White Sox: team wins division, Javy is very inconsistent and has a terrible September.
2009 w/Braves: team is mediocre, has a great overall year.

What are you talking about?

In a pitcher park, a year after he had a great year for a defending World Series champion that stands to continue to be good... I'll bet on him having a down year.

2007: 216.2 IP, 197 H, 29 HR, 50 BB, 213 K, 3.74 ERA
2008: 208.1 IP, 214 H, 25 HR, 61 BB, 200 K, 4.67 ERA
2009: 219.1 IP, 181 H, 20 HR, 44 BB, 238 K, 2.87 ERA

At the end of the day, the guy puts up amazingly consistant numbers every year. He'll pitch over 200 innings, give up around 200 hits, K 200+, and BB about 50. EVERY YEAR.

He's a solid addition to any rotation, especially when you're giving up an non entity like Melky Cabrera.

I agree he's a solid addition, but you're missing the biggest stat in those lines. His horribly inconsistent ERA. Like I said, his value is in high Ks, HR, low BB (thus K/BB), consistent IP, great FIP numbers. ERA though: 4.84 to 3.74 then to 4.67 then to 2.87? That's pretty hard to stomach for a fan with Javy on your team.

Especially when:
4.84 - team wins 90 games
3.74 - team loses 90 games
4.67 - team makes playoffs
2.87 - team misses playoffs

the only stat that matters too me about Vasquez is how many innings he will be able to eat and rest our bullpen helping our younger pitchers, the dude is gonna be our 4th starter with an all star lineup all he has to do is eat innings and keep his ERA at least 4.50 and under range.

i just worry about him coming back to the big man's league of the AL...his ERA should jump and being a flyball pitcher in yankee stadium isn't exactly a good thing.

Keep in mind he isnt coming in to be a #1...or even a #2.

Cant go wrong with a guy this good, who at his worst will eat 200+ innings, at the back end of your rotation. Show me one GM who wouldnt take this guy as a #4, or even a #3. He'd be an ace for a few teams.

down the stretch the Yanks were literally pitching with 3 starters anyway with Joba rules and throwing the paint on the wall with Mitre/Gaudin.

this will definitely allow the Yanks pen more of a breather...isn't Boone Logan a decent reliever for them as well?

I didn't see Boone Logan for much of last year, so I can't say for that... but when he was with the White Sox he was alright. Not totally a wreck, but no someone you can really go to in big situations.

Again, I still think the Yankees got a great value for Vazquez. Just be prepared to not get the Vazquez of last season, be prepared for some very frustrating times where you watch this guy dominate for 4 innings, then have a horrible meltdown inning that kills your team. Granted, he's going to a team that is going to score a ton of runs, so there won't be as much pressure even if he gives up 4.50 or whatever per game.
