Ortiz, Cano among 6 in Home Run Derby

Six All-Star players have committed to participate in the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.

Representing the American League are the Red Sox's David Ortiz, the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera, the Yankees' Robinson Cano and the Jays' Vernon Wells.

The two National League participants include the Brewers' Corey Hart and the Cardinals' Matt Holliday.

Ortiz participated in the Home Run Derby each year from 2004-2006. Cabrera took part in the 2006 event, and Holliday competed in 2007. Cano, Hart and Wells will be making their Home Run Derby debuts.

While Cano felt honored that he was asked, Yankees manager Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long were less than enthused. They understand, they said, there is prestige in the invite, but worried about the impact it could have on Cano's second half.

"Physically, I think is somewhat of a grind," Girardi said.

He added that the decision to participate is solely Cano's.

"I would rather him probably not to do it," Long said. "But I can understand him doing it and the excitement of it. It's a pretty neat honor."

Neither Girardi nor Long spoke with Cano before he agreed to take part in the Derby, which will take place Monday in Anaheim.

Cano gave some leeway that he could decide not to participate.

"We still have five days left," Cano said before Tuesday night's game with the A's.

The remaining competitors will be announced when they have been confirmed.

The Home Run Derby will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN HD, ESPN Deportes, ESPN 3D and ESPN Radio beginning at 8 p.m. ET on Monday, July 12.

Information from ESPNNewYork's Andrew Marchand was used in this report.

I don't like Cano participating, it usually messes up the batter swing and they go into a major slump afterwards.

participating in a home run derby is a grind that could hinder their performance in the second half?

                srs?

Not liking that David is participating. He doesn't need to go into another slump like he did in April, and with as many injuries as the Sox have right now, we need all we can get from Papi.

dont like seeing Cano in this, but from what i know about him, i completely saw him accepting the invitation. my dad's friend is a writer for the Yankees and since my favorite player is Cano, so we always talk about him. from what hes told me, Cano is a little bit foolish and doesn't really understand the big scheme of things, and his work ethic is awful. hes getting a lot better with the work ethic though this year, which explains the huge year, and it has a lot to do with melky cabrera leaving.

                            Yeah, Cano is out

Everyone seems on the same page now. Robinson Cano spoke to Brian Cashman on the phone in Joe Girardi's office and was informed that head athletic trainer Gene Monahan doesn't think it's a great idea Cano hits in the State Farm Home Run Derby. He is now officially out.

"They don't want me to take the risk that I go out there and make the thing worse in my back. They don't know how many swings I'm going to make. They say I might feel good the same day, but you never know how you're going to wake up the next day.

"They don't want to take the risk that they'd lose me for the second half - two weeks, three weeks, a month. I agree with them. I don't want to put myself in a situation where they're going to have to get someone else to play second base."
