MLB suspends 3 as result of Reds-Cards brawl

Major League Baseball suspended pitcher Johnny Cueto and managers Dusty Baker and Tony La Russa as a result of the ugly brawl between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Four players were also fined by Major League Baseball.

The Reds' Cueto was suspended seven games, while Cincinnati's Baker and St. Louis' La Russa were suspended for two games each.

It is not known if Cueto will appeal his suspension. By MLB rules, Baker and La Russa can not challenge their suspensions. Both managers will serve their bans on Friday and Saturday (the Reds host the Marlins while the Cardinals host the Cubs).

Two members of the Reds -- second baseman Brandon Phillips and pitcher Russ Springer -- and two members of the Cardinals -- catcher Yadier Molina and pitcher Chris Carpenter -- were fined undisclosed amounts.

The brawl centered on Phillips, who said at the start of the series that he hates the Cardinals. He also called them complainers, using demeaning language that riled St. Louis.

When he came to bat in the first inning Tuesday night, he tapped catcher Molina's shin guard with his bat in a sign of friendship. Molina mentioned Phillips' comments and told him not to touch him. It quickly escalated into shouting, and both benches and bullpens emptied.

Carpenter ended up pinned against the backstop screen. Cueto also was pinned against the backstop nearby and kicked players around him. He later said he was afraid and trying to defend himself.

I think it's funny that Rolen didn't get anything, and he was the main dude going at Carpenter. But 7 games for Cueto, damn!

Yeah but doesn't 7 games for a pitcher only mean 1 start missed?
