The Mets have informed Jerry Manuel they will not exercise the option on his contract and let him go. They also told Minaya they will remove him from the GM post (although he will likely stay in the organization).

Big shock...as of right now, the Mets owe over $100 million to 8 players for 2011 (Santana, Beltran, Castillo, Perez, Bay, Wright, K-Rod, Reyes).
1. Will Johan Santana be able to return to his effective self? He will make $22.5 million next season and is owed at least $67.5 million until 2014. He is expected to miss the start of next season after undergoing shoulder surgery last month.
2. Carlos Beltran's final season in Flushing? His (horrible) contract comes to an end after next season in which he is owed $18.5 million.
3. The ghastly contracts of Oliver Perez and Luis Castillo. Perez enters the final year of his three-year deal next season and is owed $12 million (he has earned $24 million so far on this deal thanks to Minaya). Castillo also enters the final year of his four-year deal next season and is owed $6 million.
Whomever the new GM turns out to be, hopefully he can convince ownership to eat Perez's contract and then find another bad deal elsewhere to be able to move Castillo.
4. What will be of K-Rod? There will be a grievance hearing soon in which the Mets will try to get back about $3 million of his 2010 salary and look to turn the rest of his contract to a non-guranteed deal (which could save the team over $14 million). If the Mets are ruled against entirely, they will owe K-Rod about $11.5 million in 2011 and $3.5 million in 2012 to buy out his $17.5 million option. Either way, expect the Mets to look for a new closer.
5. The Core! David Wright had a very good bounce back season and is contracted through 2012 with a club option in 2013 (Wright makes $14 million in 2011, the highest salary of his career). Jose Reyes is facing a team option for $11 million next season (or a $500k buyout). Unless the Mets sign him to an extension, the option will be picked up.
Elsewhere, expect John Maine to be cut from the organization after another injury plagued season. Reliever Pedro Feliciano (who has the Mets record for relief appearances) had a tremendous year and may be able to cash in as a lefty specialist. However, the Mets can offer him arbitration and it will be up to Pedro to stay or test free-agency (Mets could receive draft pick compensation). SP/RP Hisanori Takahashi is a free-agent and will receive a big raise ($1 million salary in 2010) whether he stays or signs elsewhere.
Arbitration eligible players include Angel Pagan (his salary may jump to over $3 million), Mike Pelfrey (led the Mets in wins and could receive at least $4 million) and R.A. Dickey (awesome Dickey should be able to get close to $2 million).

According to people close to the team, as well as around baseball, the Mets are expected to request permission to speak with Terry Ryan and Rick Hahn, among other potential candidates for GM.
Hahn is currently the White Sox assistant GM.
Ryan, who began his career as a scout for the Mets in 1980, and who helped to build the modern-day Twins while the team’s GM, is now serving as a talent evaluator in Minnesota.
very interesting
