Not so fast...
Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that the Red Sox likely won't go through with the Adrian Gonzalez trade unless they have an "understanding a contract can get done."
The deadline for contract extension negotiations is 2 p.m. ET on Sunday, so we'll know soon whether the two sides were able to come to an agreement. Some other media reports have said that Boston will go through with the trade regardless of the negotiation's outcome. Stay turned.Comment

Gonzalez is surely looking for HUGE money and deservedly so.
BTW wasn't Werth a 20/20 guy? Werth runs pretty well.Originally posted by Nick MangoldWes Welker is a great player. He's really taken advantage of watching film. If we don't keep a Spy on him, he could really open the Gate.Comment

Meh.
There is a 2 p.m. deadline for a contract extension for Adrian Gonzalez. No news on a deal yet. But keep these things in mind:
• The Sox can still go ahead with the deal without an extension. But they would have to have a strong indication that a deal can get done.
• Waiting to announce the extension until after Opening Day could help save money on the luxury tax. That's what happened with Josh Beckett last year. The luxury tax is based on the average annual value of contracts as of Opening Day.
• Or they could just make a deal now and get it over with.Comment

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez could not agree to a contract extension and the deal has fallen through.
Boston reportedly couldn't come to an agreement with Gonzalez on a contract extension by Sunday afternoon's deadline. Heyman reported that Gonzalez asked for an eight-year extension while Boston didn't want to go beyond six. Earlier reports said the Red Sox might go through with the trade without an extension, but Heyman believes the trade has fallen through. Boston and San Diego agreed to a trade on Thursday that sent Gonzalez to the Red Sox and prospects Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo, Reymond Fuentes and a PTBNL to the Padres. The Padres said Thursday that they wouldn't field more offers for Gonzalez if this trade fell through. Meanwhile, FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal tweeted that the deal with Boston is "is far from over." Stay tuned.Comment

Its back on
In a deal set to be announced Monday, the Red Sox will acquire Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres for right-hander Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielder Reymond Fuentes.
The deal will get done without the extension Boston and Gonzalez were working on up until Sunday’s 2 p.m. ET deadline. The New York Post’s Joel Sherman says the two sides have the parameters of a deal agreed to, but will wait to finalize.
It’s possible that the two sides do in fact have an agreement, but the Red Sox will wait until April to announce it in order to stay out of the luxury tax for 2011. As is, Gonzalez will only count for $6.2 million for tax purposes next year. If he agreed to, let’s say, a seven-year, $154 million extension now, then he’d count as $20 million for 2011, potentially putting the Red Sox over the threshold at which they’d have to pay the luxury tax.
What looked like a potentially ugly day for the Red Sox now appears a whole lot better. No, they didn’t get Jayson Werth, but there were mixed signals on whether the team really wanted him anyway. And since Werth didn’t go to Detroit — and Carl Crawford is a big long shot to sign with the Tigers — the Red Sox will almost certainly get the first-round pick Detroit owes them for signing Victor Martinez. Crawford is the only remaining free agent who trumps Martinez in the Elias Rankings.Comment
