    Rumored Jay Bruce deal

6 years, $51M, club option for 7th year at $13M.

Reasonable, and a big bargain if he developes into the superstar they think he will. He was 22 this year. Who wants to be he's woefully outperforming Werth by 2012?

Next up, Votto. Thanks, Nats, this should get ugly.

    2012?

Shit, I'd rather have Bruce at any point in his career over Werth. 6 years 51m is super-reasonable for a guy like him.

That's a great deal. Werth is so overrated it's obnoxious, and this is coming from a Philly fan.

Votto is gone though, I have to think. The contracts for first basemen are going to be out of control in a year (part of the reason I was on board with the Howard contract).

So excited about this deal. Locked up a future superstar for a reasonable price for a long time. Leggoooo. Hopefully we can do the same with Joey.

They are working on a deal for Votto.

I think giving Arroyo his new deal means that they don't plan to extend Cueto and/or Volquez. I don't see how they can give long term deals to Bruce/Votto/Cueto and Volquez. Plus, they are deep at SP with Wood, Leake, Chapman, etc.

The wildcard here, is they have Yonder Alonso, who is a top 1B prospect who they curiously would not trade last year at the deadline. I guess they see him as their ace in the hole if they can't afford what Votto wants.

You would think they'd be more willing to extend Cueto as opposed to Volquez, considering Volquez's injury history, PED use, control issues, etc.

I think this year will go a long way in determining the future of Volquez. He may be the odd man out regardless, since he is the oldest of the starters not named Arroyo, and has the most service time. Small market shenanegans.

When Jocketty was with the Cardinals he worked out the same type of deal for Pujols, Molina, and Wainwright. Worked out pretty well so far.

And you can't compare Bruce's contract to Werth's. Werth was free agent eligible; Bruce was locked in to make nearly no money next year, then three years of arbitration before becoming free agent eligible.
