I'm thinking about getting back into cards. I was into baseball cards when I was a kid, but gave up the hobby in high school when the card business got crazy and each company was putting out 100 different sets with nonsense like pieces of game worn uniforms and other assorted gimmicky bullshit. I'm not into getting my cards graded or any of that nonseense, I just like gathering cool cards of players I like.

Anyway, my collection is mostly stuff from the 50's, 60's,, and 70's, and I would always get the complete Topps set each year. I think I stopped in 92.

Does Topps still put out a complete 792 card set? As far as packs, how much does a pack of cards run these days? How many do you get? I'm sure its something obscene like 5 cards for $3 or something.

Anyone here still into cards?

I tried a few years back to get into it again. And yes they were ridiculous, I paid like $160 for a box one time. Anything worth money were the cards that had pieces of the players uniforms or bats/balls in them. Card may book at $100 but dealers only want to give you 20-30% for the value.

After stupidly putting over a thousand dollars into the hobby my sophomore year in high school, I can assure you that it is not worth it to get back into collecting. The hobby is pretty much dead. The influx of game worn jerseys/bats and autographed cards pretty much ruined everything.

On August 6, 2009, Major League Baseball announced it entered into a multi-year deal with Topps giving it exclusive rights to produce MLB trading cards.

Stay retired.

I haven't collected cards in like...10 years. Its a poor investment and at this point the "hobby's" bubble burst many years ago to the point it is no longer a hobby. Overpriced cardboard.

My only suggestion would be this...go out and get rookie cards of already established or retired players. The prices will basically always be the same for them and in that regard, you can maintain it being a "hobby"...going out and buying boxes and hoping for great things is pointless.

Don't go into it like you used to, be smart about it and make it a real hobby...don't try and make money off it. Just go out, get rookie cards of retired players and established players and call it a day.

I actually had one of those, it was a prized possession. I also had a Tim Salmon. Both are probably still lying around my parent's house somewhere.

Buying boxes/packs are ridiculously expensive. If you are trying to buy singles off e-Bay, then maybe (i haven't checked there for cards in over 4 years), but there is no fun in that IMO. I get a rush out of opening an excessive amount of packs.
