    Harmon Killebrew appreciation station

    Dead at 74.

A huge hulking man, he hit 573 HR's, leading the league 5 times. 11 time all star, 1969 AL MVP.

Underrated IMO, career 143 OPS+, from '59-'71 was utterly dominant.

I remember seeing him on ESPN Classic when I was a kid in that old HR Derby show so I asked my dad about him.

One of the all time greats. RIP

I always remember watching the roll call of sluggers during the opening credits...

Its home run derby! With Mickey Mantle! Rocky Colavito! Harmon Killebrew! Jackie Jensen!

....and thinking to myself, who the fuck is Jackie Jensen?

Killebrew had a skill set taylor made for1994 or 1934. Either era, and you are possibly talking about guys chasing him instead of Aaron or Bonds. He ended up peaking smack dab in the most pitcher friendly era of modern baseball. He barely missed the 50's, then got old just when the cookie cutter astroturf fields were being built.

Today, he would have been moved to DH early on, batted 4th, and played forever. Think Jim Thome, but with better power. Thome has six 40+ homer seasons in a much easier hitting environment. Thome also had a shorter but more dominant peak. Otherwise, pretty similar.

The other week I was watching an episode of this in a hotel. It was Hank Aaron vs. Wally Post.

Here's a complete list of who was on the show, can't believe they invited Gus Triandos to participate.

Good point. Killebrew played in a dead ball era for the prime of his career. He had a pretty long career because he started so young, but he could have extended his career had he been a DH earlier.
