Buster Posey to DL, Fractured Leg & Torn Ligaments

From the collision at home last night. Talk is, he's done for the year.

Update, 11:35 am EDT: According to this tweet from CSN's Amy Gutierrez, we have a worst-case scenario. Posey apparently has a leg fracture, as well as torn ligaments. Brutal news. Get well, Buster.

Belt has been recalled from Triple-A, per Gutierrez's report, along with veteran backstop Chris Stewart(notes). In 132 plate appearances at Fresno, Belt delivered a .337/.470/.525 line, along with four homers and three steals. Add as needed.

After shit like this happens it always brings up the arguments for moving great hitting catchers to another safer position. So many of these guys grew up playing catcher and they love being the general on the field.
Posey is also one of the better defensive catchers too, so thats a hard argument to make for him. It would be one thing if he was terrible behind the plate, but he's far from it.

It is just tough luck. Look at Ivan Rodriguez, who is still catching a good portion of his teams' games pushing 40. He's still an above average defensive catcher and has stayed healthy throughout his career.

Is it bad that I couldn't stop watching this today at work? It sucks that BP will be out all year but it was a pretty amazing collision.

Really sucks that the kid is hurt, but I disagree with the talk that collisions at the plate should be banned. Too hard to enforce and too much grey area.

I agree with MVPete above. I don't care how good a catcher is defensively..if he can as soon as I get a stud catcher that can hit I'm moving him to 1B or a corner OF spot.

Mauer is probably going to end up moving to 3B within the next couple years. Can't have the face of the franchise missing so many games and risk the future.

Brutal collision. Really sad about Posey. I drafted him in the 3rd round. Don't care about losing him on my FF team, just saying that's how much I like him. Just bought an orange Posey jersey about a month ago, too.

I hope he comes back 100%.

I don't think anything about the play was dirty but it was a ruthless collision by Cousins. I haven't ever seen a guy rocket propel his body into a catcher like that before.

I know he wasn't "trying" to hurt Posey but what do you think is going to happen when you launch yourself into another dude like that. He straight up airplaned him.

All Cousins is trying to do in that spot is win the game. Can't fault him for that.

Nobody is at fault. Just a ruthless play. I'd have done the same thing if I was Cousins.

He was probably thinking he had to knock the ball out of Posey's glove in order to win the game since he was out by a mile. I don't think at any moment Cousins was thinking "Oh shit, I could break this guys leg if I run him over". The win was the only thing on his mind, so even though it did look reckless, it was a clean play.

I'm torn on whether running over the catcher should be a legal play in the MLB. On one hand it's tough to see a young promising catcher like this have to miss significant time because of a football style play but on the other hand it's such a bang bang play and it's too tough to try to take that out of the game and have the players not have the option to win the game when he is dead to rights like that. I think I just would have to agree with MVPete and Firsttimer, if you don't want your best player on the field getting into a situation like that then put him in the outfield or at first. It's just too risky to be paying a player top dollars and expecting production but then worrying about him getting ran over, and his knees wearing down by squatting all game long.

Mauer has told the Twins he wants to stay at catcher, but he is such a big investment as far as their money is concerned and how great a bat he is. I bet you Posey would of said the same things before this happened. Now teams can use this as an example of how easy they can be gone for the year in a second. 99% of the time it's not even situations like this, it's just the wear and tear of all those innings bending at the knees day in and day out.

I really didn't understand the trade Minny made of Wilson Ramos for Matt Capps. If Mauer wants to continue to catch, it would of be great to rotate him out to DH once in awhile with Ramos coming in and catching. This is a luxury the AL has, a team like the Giants would have to get Posey to learn first base, which isn't a tough thing to do.
Even some AL teams dont have that luxury. Boston and Baltimore are chief amongst those, as both teams have David Ortiz and Vladimir Guerrero, who certainly will not sit as DH. It sucks losing Wieters' bat every fifth game or so, but its a necessary evil to keep him productive.

I know that Posey was eligible as a first baseman in my Yahoo league, so he must play there on some sort of consistent basis, with Huff moving to the outfield when it does happen. Although, Huff was one of the leaders in UZR last season amongst first baseman, so they might be losing defense there when benching Posey at catcher.

That trade was still horrible. You don't give him a premier catching prospect for a rental reliever. If it was a talent like Jose Reyes or Adrian Gonzalez, then I understand, but not a reliever.

If this was random chubby latino backup C who was injured, there would be no talk of banning home plate collisions.

                            Nonsense.
