Home Run Derby to feature Captains, and Teams?

NEW YORK (AP) -- Prince Fielder and David Ortiz will get to pick their teammates for the All-Star Home Run Derby.

Major League Baseball announced on Thursday that Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers was chosen as captain of the National League squad and Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox was picked to be the American League captain.

The last two derby winners will each pick three teammates for the July 11 slugfest at Chase Field in Phoenix. The leagues will compete against each other in this year's event.

Ortiz was the derby champion last season and Fielder won in 2009.

Winning the Derby didn't hurt Fielder's swing in 2009, hopefully it's the same result this time around. Adding captains and the team competition just seems like an additional gimmick. And it's on ESPN, so it will probably suck...

Willie Mo Pena is a can't miss candidate.

I hadn't seen him in years and he showed up out of nowhere against the Royals earlier this year.

First pitch he hit a fucking bullet that had no trouble clearing the centerfield wall. Then he rounded the bases like a G.

He would put on a display.

Hmm, I wonder who Ortiz is going to pick....the AL has no shortage of candidates. However, if I were him I would pick Jose Bautista, Mark Reynolds and Paul Konerko. I don't think you can go wrong with that team. The reason I picked Reynolds instead of someone else is that he's got a groove in his swing which can launch the ball if the ball lands there.
