Must be nice to pluck an all star for basically nothing (not giving up your best prospect) and have a reaction of "i'm fine with this".

Watching the Astros game....they took Pence out in the middle of the inning. He's a Phillie now.

edit: He was crying while saying goodbye to his teammates in the dugout.

I'll give Ed Wade credit. He got a nice return. Selling high ftw.

We call it an "Ed Wade" here in Philadelphia. I'm surprised it isn't a variation of a cheesesteak at this point.

            It gets better

            Jayson Stark
#Astros also sending cash to #Phillies as part of Pence deal. Otherwise, Phillies likely would have been over luxury-tax threshold #trades

Am I the only one here who thinks this is a great deal for Houston? Pence is a good player, not great.

If the Brewers struggle next year without Fielder, I hope like hell they trade Corey Hart if this is what outfielders are going for.

                  Plus Phillies get cash.

Not in the slightest. They got two single A ball players that are somewhat highly rated.

I mean, seriously, what the hell is Wade doing? The Blue Jays got Rasmus for, essentially, they're second best pitching prospect.

The Giants gave up their best pitching prospect which was regarded as one of the top 20 in the nation.

The Astros got ... two Single A ball players? They're doing ... adequately
                        in Single A?

Seriously, someone needs to look in to this trade? I think Ed Wade was offered a job by the Phillies if he sold Pence low.

God, if Pence went for this, Bourn should go for ... like a prospect?
The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept.
As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!
If only I had died instead of you
O Absalom, my son, my son!"

Singleton is a top 30 prospect. Cosart is top 50. Zeid isn't special, but he has a chance to be a 4/5 starter in the majors, otherwise he'll be a usefull bullpen arm, either way he'll be in the majors by the end of 2012.

Pence isn't a great player. He's a good player, who has been extremely lucky this year. The Astros sold high, and got a nice return.

Yeah the Phillies didn't trade Pence for peanuts. Singleton is going to be a very good player in a couple of years, I'm not sold on Cosart though.

If the Astros had gotten Dom Brown, I would have agreed with you, but under the circumstances, I think that Ed Wade needs another cheesesteak named after him.

Okay, you're like the third person to tell me this, so I took a breath before thinking about a response.

Singleton and Cosart are towards the bottom of BA's Top 50 list. 41 and 43 respectively.

Pence may be having a lucky year, but he's still good. He's put up back to back season of .280+ 25homer seasons. He's hitting for better average, but less power. He's got more doubles than normal, but fewer homers. You could argue that he's not hitting the ball well.

Either way, the guy was 28, plays decent right field, hits well and for power and was under team control.

And they got two single A guys who are supposed to be good in three years and a guy who MIGHT become a number 5 starter and could PROBABLY become a decent bullpen arm? Oh and they had to pay money too? What am I missing? Seems like an awful lot of potential, but nothing that was even remotely close to certain or even probable.

I dunno. I wish I knew what other teams were offering.

So they traded a very good player for another very good player? I mean, why bother?

This. I really think the Astros should have gotten more out of this deal. The Giants gave up Zack Wheeler for 2 months of Beltran. Surely the Astros could have gotten a little more for TWO years of Pence?
