10 years? Probably closer to 5.

Plus ARod and Ivan Rodriguez will likely do it next year or the year after.

I'm interested in it for the historical aspect.

I may give the documentary a look since Jeter has always kept his life private, but I'm more amped about the Giants series on Showtime.

Amongst active players under 30, the top two hitters are Carl Crawford (1544 career) and Jose Reyes (1243 career).

Crawford turns 30 in August though. Reyes won't turn 30 until June 2013.

You could probably add Damon to the list too. He should finish this year with around 2740 career hits so if he can play 2-3 more years then I think he'll get 3000.

Then you have guys like Ichiro and Helton who have an outside shot 3000 if they can put up good years into their 40s.

Chipper will be at 2670 by the end of this year at this current pace. Wouldn't surprise me to see him hang on for at least two more seasons if he continues to hit around .265.

As a Yankee fan yes....kind of. I cant believe he is the only Yankee to do this. If Gehrig didn't get sick or DiMaggio didnt go to war he would be the 3rd. Shit if Mickey Mantle took care of his body he might even be the 4th but.....you cant change that now.

Jeter is a class act though...he deserves it. H may not be the best SS but he is a winner and leader.

I don't necessarily dislike Jeter, I had a poster of him on my wall when I was a kid and you can't help but appreciate what he's done in his career. To become a first ballot HOFer as a skinny American short stop with marginal power and athletic ability is pretty remarkable.

So it's not out of hate that I say this, but ... I really don't care. Maybe it's just the over saturation of Yankees coverage, or maybe it's just that he fucking sucks now, but I really do not care. I'm a history of the game guy myself but 3,000 hits doesn't really effect me as much as other milestones. It's a cool thing to do but so many great hitters did not reach 3,000 that I never really considered it a must for a great career.

I don't really care, it's just a longevity stat. I don't have any problem with Jeter.

I care even less about this than the NFL lockout.

It is interesting who ends up with 3000 hits and who doesn't. Its a remarkable sign of consistency. Guys like Craig Biggio and Robin Yount might not have been terrific hitters, but they were very good and very durable. I think it would be amazing if Ichiro got 3000 hits, because he started his MLB career so late.

It still amazes me that no Yankee has ever gotten to 3,000 hits.

yes I mentioned it earlier and the reasons why Gehrig, Mantle, and DiMaggio don't have them.

That is why to me it doesn't mean as much as he was not as good as these guys and if these outside things didn't hinder these players he would be the 3rd or 4th.

Okay, I have to admit, that was fucking cool. Glad I stumbled onto YES as it was happening and caught it live.

No. But it is kinda cool that only he and Wade Boggs hit their 3000th as home runs.
